We have all heard of people doing some wild things in the name of solidarity, but one guy on Reddit just shared a story that takes “supportive friend” to a level that is straight-up criminal. Imagine being a mid-20s guy who takes immense pride in his hair, donating money to a friend’s sick relative, and then being told that if you don’t literally shave your head, you’re an ahole. If you’ve ever felt like your boundaries were being pushed, this story of a “bandwagon” gone wrong is going to make you want to lock your doors and hide your hair clippers.
The Original Poster (OP) had a close friend, “Gary,” whose relative unfortunately contracted cancer. Being a decent human, the OP was sympathetic and even chipped in $100 for the treatment. But Gary wasn’t satisfied with a cash donation. He showed up one day with a freshly buzzed scalp and demanded the OP join the family tradition of shaving their heads in support. When the OP politely declined because he actually likes his well-styled black hair, Gary didn’t just take the hint. He called him an ahole and stormed out, as if hair length is the ultimate measure of empathy.
Fast forward a week, and the OP finds himself at a party where Gary is conspicuously absent. After a night of video games and a few too many drinks, the OP did the responsible thing and crashed on a bed upstairs. He thought he was in for a blissful night of sleep, but he woke up to a literal nightmare. A friend shook him awake to tell him that Gary had snuck in late and was caught mid-shave. We aren’t just talking about a little trim, either. Gary went full horror movie on the OP’s head while he was unconscious.

To make a bad situation even more sh!t, Gary didn’t just stop at the hair on top. He actually shaved off one of the OP’s eyebrows! When the OP woke up, Gary wasn’t even hiding. He was standing there, proud as a peacock, basically telling the OP that now he had to finish the job and be bald like everyone else. It is a level of entitlement that is hard to wrap your head around. Gary genuinely believed that his “cause” gave him the right to violate his friend’s bodily autonomy while he was passed out.
The OP did exactly what any of us would do: he called the police. When the cops arrived, Gary actually admitted to the whole thing, still claiming he was justified. Newsflash, Gary: shaving someone’s head without their consent is legally considered a form of assault. When the police asked if he wanted to press charges, the OP gave a resounding “H£LL YES!” Gary was hauled away in cuffs, cussing out the victim of his own bizzare stunt the entire way.
Now, the OP is dealing with the fallout of being a “bald by force” person. He tried to get his hair restyled, but there was no saving the hack job Gary did. He’s currently bald and missing an eyebrow, and according to him, it’s going to take months for his hair to return to its former glory. But the drama didn’t end with the arrest. Now, Gary’s family is crawling out of the woodwork to beg the OP to drop the charges, claiming Gary was “off his meds.”
Let’s be real for a second: being “off your meds” is a serious issue, but it isn’t a “get out of jail free” card for sneaking into a house and assaulting your sleeping friend. The OP didn’t even know Gary was on medication, which just adds another layer of bullsh!t to the whole situation. It feels like a convenient excuse being used by a family that doesn’t want to admit their son did something absolutely unhinged.
The emotional commentary here is pretty unanimous: Gary is a total ahole. You don’t get to k!ll a friendship and commit a crime just because you want “solidarity.” Real support is about helping the person who is sick, not harassing your friends into changing their physical appearance. Gary turned a tragic family situation into a reason to bully and assault people, and that is a sh!t-show of epic proportions.
The fact that Gary’s family is calling the OP “toxic” for seeking justice is peak gaslighting. They are trying to make him feel guilty for holding Gary accountable for his actions. If Gary is truly unwell, then the legal system is exactly where he needs to be so he can get the court-ordered help or supervision required. Dropping the charges just tells Gary that he can do whatever he wants to people as long as he claims he’s doing it for a “good cause.”
The OP’s friend group has mostly cut Gary out, which tells you everything you need to know. If everyone who actually knows the guy thinks he deserves the charges, then the OP should trust his gut. He was violated in his sleep. That is a massive breach of trust that you don’t just “get over” because someone’s aunt sent you a mean text message.
It’s going to be a long, itchy few months while that hair grows back, and let’s not even talk about how long it takes for an eyebrow to return to its natural state. The OP is not an ahole for wanting Gary to face the consequences of his actions. He is a victim of a very weird, very public assault, and he has every right to see the legal process through to the end.
So, NTA (Not the ahole). Gary needs to learn that “support” doesn’t involve clippers and a sneak attack. We hope the OP finds a really great hat collection to get him through the next few months and that he keeps those charges exactly where they are.
What would you do if a “friend” shaved your head in your sleep? Is “solidarity” ever a good excuse for crossing a line like this, or is Gary just a total a**hole? Let us know in the comments if you think the OP should drop the charges or if Gary needs to stay in cuffs!
