His mom called me fat at dinner. He laughed.

I (30F) have always been a little curvy. Nothing extreme, just not thin. My boyfriend (32M) claimed to love that about me. Said I was “soft in all the right ways.”

His mom, though? Different story.

At dinner with his family, she kept offering me salad and skipping me when passing bread. Then she looked at me and said, “You’re very pretty… you’d be stunning if you just lost a few pounds.”

Everyone went silent.

I looked at my boyfriend, expecting support. He… laughed. Actually chuckled and said, “Mom, you can’t say that at least not at dinner.”

I excused myself. Cried in the car.

When I told him how it made me feel, he said I was overreacting and that “she’s old school, just ignore her.”

No. I’m not ignoring that. And I’m not staying with a man who thinks body-shaming is funny.

This is not “old school” it’s mean, and insensitive, and hurtful. Your BF’s mom is a bully. She’s probably been a bully since 6th grade. Personally I tell her “you’re very pretty, but you’d be stunning if you didn’t have that c@nt of a personality.”… but that’s just me.
