My father died in May. We received a letter shortly after from Blue Cross saying that my mother had been reported dead and thus her insurance was cancelled. My mother is still very much alive and in her 80s. We tracked the error down to the hospital using her insurance number instead of my father’s when billing insurance for his final days in the hospital. We talked to someone in the hospital billing department who confirmed and was shocked to find it. We have spent months now trying to get her insurance reinstated with various legal records and letters being sent to different agencies. We still do not have a resolution.
Does anyone with better understanding of the law have any advice? We have very little money to get by after my father’s death but should we be looking for a lawyer? Will that be too expensive? Is there anything we can do about the months of hell this has put us through in addition to getting her insurance back?

Have you been in touch with the state insurance commissioner? That may be another route to try.
