This Guy Turned Off the Hotel Room Power So His Girlfriend Could Sleep and Her Unhinged Reaction Will Make Your Head Spin

Traveling with someone is the ultimate relationship test. You really do not know a person until you are stuck in a foreign country with them, trying to navigate weird hotel plumbing and jet lag. Sometimes the trip brings you closer together. Other times, it reveals that your travel companion is completely disconnected from reality. One guy on Reddit recently shared a story about a baffling hotel disagreement, and the internet is completely stunned by his girlfriend’s reaction.

The Original Poster is a guy who took a trip to a foreign country last year with a girl he refers to as Ann. Anyone who has traveled internationally knows that hotels outside of the United States often have very specific quirks. In this particular country, their hotel room was equipped with a highly common energy saving feature.

In order to turn on the electricity in the room, you have to physically place your room keycard into a designated slot right by the front door. It is a brilliant system designed to stop tourists from leaving the air conditioning blasting while they are out exploring the city. When you remove the card, the power shuts off completely.

During their very first night in the hotel, Ann ended up falling asleep before he did. When the guy finally decided to go to bed a little later, he ran into a minor mechanical issue. He simply could not figure out how to turn off one of the random lamps in the room. He looked everywhere, but the switch was nowhere to be found.

Not wanting to make a bunch of noise and wake his sleeping girlfriend, he opted for the most logical and considerate solution available. He walked over to the door and simply pulled the keycard right out of the slot. The rogue lamp immediately turned off, the room went dark, and he climbed into bed to get some much needed sleep.

The next morning, the guy woke up and casually plugged the keycard back into the slot to restore the electricity. He thought absolutely nothing of it. In his mind, he had successfully solved a minor inconvenience without waking up his travel partner. But in Ann’s mind, he had just committed an unforgivable human rights violation.

Ever since that fateful night, Ann has cited the great power outage as undeniable proof that he is a terrible guy. She actually looked him in the eye and claimed that electricity is a basic human need. She accused him of treating her as less than human, and acting like she was a mere accessory just because he turned off the wall outlets while she was actively unconscious.

The poor guy was left completely baffled by her dramatic accusations. He tried to apply basic logic to the situation. He pointed out that the weather was perfectly nice outside, meaning the room never got hot without the air conditioning running. Furthermore, she was already charging her cell phone on a portable battery pack, so she did not even wake up to a dead device.

When he directly asked her how having the electricity off for a few hours actually hurt her, she completely refused to give him a straight response. Instead of communicating like a mature adult, she just weaponized the incident to make him feel terrible. He even apologized and tried to explain his good intentions, but his apologies only seemed to make her even more angry.

The constant manipulation eventually started messing with his head. He began to genuinely worry that there was something fundamentally wrong with him. He started questioning his own sanity, and wondering if his inability to predict her wild emotional responses meant he was somehow broken or lacked basic empathy.

Let us be crystal clear here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this guy. Ann is demonstrating a classic case of toxic manipulation. You cannot get mad at someone for letting you sleep peacefully through the night. Claiming that turning off a hotel lamp is a violation of basic human rights is the kind of unhinged logic that belongs in a comedy sketch, not a healthy relationship.

The internet entirely rallied behind the confused boyfriend. They assured him that he is definitely not the bad guy in this situation. Ann sounds exhausting, and her refusal to actually explain her feelings proves she just enjoys playing the victim. If she loves electricity that much, she can pay the hotel bill and sleep with all the lights blazing next time. What is the most ridiculous thing someone has ever argued with you about on a vacation?
