Housekeeping is completely unnecessary and annoying

r/

I never have housekeeping visit my room when I’m staying in a hotel. I put the DND placard up immediately when I first walk in. I don’t want my stuff touched or moved, and god forbid I can’t find something I don’t want there to be anyone to blame but myself. I don’t want someone coming in once I’ve left to make my bed and touch things.

I can request towels and soaps when I want them, but it never feels necessary to do so. Worst case, I go out into the hall and ask for what I need.

They can wait until I leave to come in and do what they need to do.

P.S I always leave a tip once I’ve left. I just don’t want them doing anything in my room during my stay.

I’m the same way. I ask for extra towels when I check in and sometimes put trash can in the hall to be emptied.

Totally agree, sorry for the down vote. I want privacy, and I don’t want anyone in there, especially when I’m not there.

I have been to hotels where the “do not disturb” sign is attached to the key (along with power for the lights and so on) so you can’t leave it while you are away, which of course makes me paranoid. I know most housekeepers aren’t thieves, but some are, and even if not, I still don’t want my stuff touched either way.

I know some people clearly want this service, since it is the default at many establishments, but it is definitely not my style (or that of many of my peers). Maybe it is old fashioned, and a treat to have a brand new room every day, but as you said, I’m good with cleaning up after myself, and asking for things like towels when and if I need them.

I basically live out of hotels for work since they have us travel so much (I sleep more nights of the year in a hotel than I do in my own home). My coworkers and I always use the do not disturb. We’ve seen too many of our other coworkers wind up with shit missing

Having been a housekeeper in the past, I don’t think my stuff is in danger. If someone wants to come make my bed and give me fresh towels I’m not gonna stop them. However I can understand someone preferring privacy.

    I’m exactly the same.

I’m just the opposite. Part of the charm of staying in motel or hotel ( motel preferably because being able to walk right out the door to the car and have a place to sit outside is so much better). Part of that charm is leaving and coming back to clean everything and fresh sheets. Being a a man who sees the objective superiority of Motels over hotels I don’t actually bring my luggage into the room and leave it in the trunk of the car and just bring in what clothes I am going to change into so no worries about my stuff being touched.

I wish they have a window of time they are coming, sometimes I get back in the afternoon and want to relax in th hotel and they come and I telll them to come back tomorrow so now I say no longer want any housekeeping at all

I agree if I’m staying one or two nights. But if it’s anything longer, I’ll take some housekeeping.

I do the same things, but I also understand that it’s all part of the experience for some people.

Plus, if I am staying for four days or more I will use housekeeping service just to freshen things up, which is every two days or so.

I think it depends on how long your stay is. If it’s more than a couple of days- I’ll get my room cleaned

I love housekeeping. Coming back to a clean room; bathroom cleaned up, bed made, replenished toiletries… my clothes hung up, lol.

I love it. Totally luxurious and wonderful!

Makes me wish I had a maid.

A lot of places now, if you are there like 2-3 days will just say they won’t come at all.

    I want the housekeeping service.

One if the best parts of staying in a hotel is coming back to a freshly made bed and clean towels.

I’ve never once used housekeeping in a motel/hotel. I don’t think I’ve even met someone who has either.

Facts, but there definitely not being told to accommodate customers like us in general. They’re told to work the numbers and do as many rooms as possible in as short amount of time as they can I’m quite sure!

Wait till you stay in a hotel for like a week and just have a pile of dirty towels. I mean yeah that’s no harm, but if they come when we’re out, its not annoying and they can pick up the dirty laundry. I like to be in a clean environment when I am on vacation

I would have agreed with you until I had to stay in a hotel for a week during COVID. Housekeeping couldn’t come. And I missed it.

I work in hotel management and I can relate in the sense that I don’t like housekeeping in my room. But just to touch on the ‘necessity’ of it, if we have a guest stay a little longer than the normal 1-5 days and never get housekeeping, their room is going to take way longer to clean from all the grime and dust build up.

    100% with you on this

Feels so wasteful. I guess it is giving someone a job and income, but do we really need towels laundered after every use? Why waste the water and the energy for the dryer?

  22. Unfair_Finger5531 Avatar

The whole point for me is to have a fresh, clean room each day. You may not prefer this, but it’s kind of nuts to say it’s unnecessary and annoying. It serves a clear purpose, and it’s beneficial. A clean room is better than a dirty one by pretty much anyone’s estimation.

  23. ptero_smack_dyl Avatar

If I’m at a fancy place, I like the luxury of having a made bed and whatnot when I come back. If I’m traveling for work, stay the fuck outta my room

  24. user41510 Avatar

I ask for towels if I’m there longer than 2-3 days. Otherwise, stay out.

I don’t understand “coming back to a clean room.” Do people trash their rooms on a daily basis?

  25. ScarletDarkstar Avatar

I don’t see how it’s annoying since it’s an available option, and can be declined. Just tell them at check in that you don’t want housekeeping service unless you specifically request it.

I don’t generally use it for short stays. If I had a  small child and diapers in the trash, as an example, I wouldn’t want to put that in the hall or keep it in the room. In that case I’d want the trash picked up.

I hear you. I bet there are lots of us like that. I don’t want those constant knocks on the door. I’ll go looking for anything I need myself.
