I moved states a while back and didn’t do much driving in the past year. It’s a bit of a process to get the new state plates and registration since it’s appointment only but I’ve got the ball rolling on it.
If I got pulled over with expired out of state plates, would showing the officer that I have an appointment scheduled for a new state license/license plate help me not get in trouble?
My license is not expired and the car is insured. It’s just the tags
How bad of an idea is it for me to drive with a 22 month expired registration?

You have had 22 months to set up an appointment. You would likely get a ticket. The fact that you have a valid DL and insurance would avoid me towing the vehicle though.
When you called the DMV in your state to setup the appointment and explained the situation in detail this was their solution? Just wait?
Are they going to pay your fine, get your car out of impound and represent you at your court date too?
Can you not get a temporary plate?
Have an appointment? Big deal, no one knows if you’ll actually attend.
Either make the phone calls to the right people or stay off the road.
How bad depends on state. In CA your car can be towed even if parked if the reg is 6 mo or more expired.
You’ll get ticketed if i run your plate. If you’re willing to take that risk, drive the car. You aren’t gonna go to jail over expired tags.
I’d take your tags and tow your car probably. If you’re extremely polite about it and aren’t far from your house then there’s a chance I would let you drive it home while I followed you, assuming you actually have insurance. Most of the time, I’ve found that cars with registration that is that far expired also don’t have insurance.
If that’s the case then it’s more tickets and 100% towing your car.
You should be able to at least get a temporary registration for it that’s good for like 2 weeks or a month or something depending on the state. The exact process varies between states.
I have a question similar to this. Car has been unregistered for 3 months, but we bought it from a dealership out of state. We have been after them, the lien holder, and the oos DMV for the title so we can get the registration.
2 days ago, out of state DOT sent a letter to us about a $10 unpaid balance for loan application that we did not know about before processing registration. The letter was stamped 4 days ago.
The vehicle does have plates sent by the out of state dealership. They are dealer plates with no year markings.
If I did get pulled over, what then?
I’d def give you a ticket
In my state, I would be towing your car and you can get it out of the tow yard after paying all the associate fees and overdue registration fees.
Depending on your attitude, I may let you drive away, but you’re still getting a ticket for the car being unregistered
You would get a ticket from me unless you were out of the country on a military deployment. I’m quite lenient and don’t generally write for less than 6 months expired. 2 years? You’re getting cited.
You’re getting a ticket for sure for 2 years expired.
At one point it was near $400 for my registration because of emission and safety inspections. But the ticket for expired tags was only $50. So I drove around for almost 3 years with expired plates and got pulled over 4 times for it. Still got out ahead.
I would cite you for multiple things.
