Hi everyone,
I (34F) recently started dating a wonderful man (40M) who I’ve known casually for years through mutual friends. Earlier this year, we reconnected at a BBQ, and things naturally progressed from there – we’ve been spending time together and going on dates ever since.
He is genuinely one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I’ve ever met. That said, I’m aware that he’s still healing from a very toxic and abusive long-term relationship. He was with his ex for 7 years – someone who struggled with alcoholism and addiction especially during COVID when she lost her job. The situation escalated over time, and he experienced significant emotional, mental, and physical abuse. Some of this was witnessed by others and documented in court when she was eventually charged.
They finally separated in December 2023, and since then, he’s been going to therapy and focusing on his own healing journey.
I want to be a safe and supportive partner as he continues to work through his past. For anyone who’s been in a similar situation – particularly men who’ve experienced abuse at the hands of a female partner – what helped you feel safe in a new relationship? What kind of support meant the most to you?
Thank you in advance for any insight you’re willing to share. x
