How can I get my money?

I worked for a sketchy landscaping company and was abruptly fired with no explanation, I worked there for around 3 weeks. I think the boss used me to catch up on services because once he wasn’t stressing about catching up on clients houses he fired me. It has been over a week since he fired me he said this last Monday I could receive my check from him. It is now Friday writing this. I have called him every single day and i get sent to his voicemail. He claims he uses a legit payroll company that takes out taxes. He runs his own little landscaping company only employing his two sons and a guy I was an acquaintances with in grade school who’s one of the bosses son’s best friends. So while working there I felt like an outsider since they were all super close, I feel like he’s not going to pay me since getting to know him he seems grimy, they way he fired me out of the blue with no explanation just proves it. I’m a little intimidated too go and confront him about it since he is very moody, is shredded and teaches Akito on the side as a hobby. so I’m hesitant to go confront him face too face.
How can go about getting my paycheck? Is a 1500 dollar paycheck too small to sue over?
