How do I (20F) stop getting mad at my boyfriend (21M) over flowers?

r/

My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 months now. Since the beginning of our relationship, I was very open about liking flowers and wanting to receive flowers. Unfortunately, the first time he got me flowers I had to ask multiple times to the point I didn’t feel excited to receive them anymore.

Don’t get me wrong though. My boyfriend is amazing. He shows up for me on my bad days and celebrates my wins. He’s done extraordinary acts of love like spending hours fixing my car, taking me out on dates, getting me sweet treats, and holding me accountable to my actions.

However, I can’t seem to get past the fact I’ve had to ask him many times to get me flowers. Every time he says one of these dialogues:

  • I have bills to pay first
  • You’re asking me at the wrong time
  • I thought it would be better to put that money toward something better
  • I was thinking about getting you some already but you keep asking

I have been patient, but I wish I didn’t have to ask. I feel like this is a stupid thing he and I have been arguing over. He’s generally not a romantic person, but he cares in different ways.

I just feel like flowers are a cheap gesture, but he feels like I don’t appreciate what he does for me.

And how do you return the favor ? Your request might not be unreasonable if you also do all of these things and more for him. Otherwise I understand his points.
