How do I enjoy work when the job conflicts with my moral compass?

r/

Hello everyone!

For context, I’m a new grad in my early 20’s and haven’t been in the workforce for a long time. I’m currently in my 2nd full time corporate role. I’m highly motivated and largely have entrepreneurial aspirations to one day start my own business. My next step is going back to school to pursue a masters degree in my field.

I recently took a new job and although I was very excited about starting, I soon discovered that through a mix of vagueness from the company and my own personal naivety, the job heavily conflicts with my moral compass and what I believe is ethical.

The job is essentially in the field of debt collections. Not going after dumb financial purchases like a big expensive car, but instead preying on people who have fallen on hard times. Medical Bills, small time checking account overdrafts. The whole thing just doesn’t sit right with me. Literally working with legal teams to make sure that people get sued, served, and ensuring that impoverished people stay in bad situations.

I want to continue doing this until I get back in school to avoid a job-hopping trend on my resume and to save money, but I’m worried about my mental health knowing what I’m doing to people.

Advice appreciated

Roll with it or get out, there are no in-betweens. If you try to strike an in-between you will just bring anguish upon yourself.
