It’s harder for sure simply because your priorities shift and most people tend to drift apart. Especially when going into a long term relationship or having children. But not impossible. I can say with utmost certainty, same as with a relationship (yet to see it happen myself tbh) that the right friends will somehow, someway come into your life. So all I can say is be patient and do leave your house.
I’m 40, and the HS/college friends I still keep in touch with either don’t live nearby or have families, so I’d be lucky to see them maybe a few times per year.
A trusted female colleague around my age, who’s already married with kids, who I do lunch and travel to work-related events with, is the closest I have to a friend on most days.

Usually mutual hobbies, neighbors, or people I’ve worked with. At least, that’s how I’ve done it.

Hobbies and social activities, but mostly drugs
Know what stuff you like. Go to places where people do the stuff you like. Say you are new and want to socialize.
