How do you feel about the EU fining Elon Musk (X) $1 Billion for ‘disinformation’ ?

  1. TopBound3x5 Avatar

    Seems sensible

  2. Boundary-Interface Avatar

He should be barred from doing business in the EU too. A billion dollars is nothing to this shithead.

  3. OjamaPajama Avatar

    Good and correct.

  4. Due_Willingness1 Avatar

    Should be higher

  5. power0722 Avatar

Does anyone really believe he’ll pay any of that fine?

  6. alyosha_pls Avatar

    It’s a start

  7. gringgo Avatar

    It should be more.

  8. ThatsItImOverThis Avatar

    More of that please.

  9. Evendim Avatar

    Yes please, and more?

  10. st2439 Avatar

That fine is to low. To him that’s just the cost to spread more lies.

  11. Few-Lengthiness-2286 Avatar

    This is literally /r/politics now

  12. PlaidBastard Avatar

They should invite him to Europe to talk about it, then do the whole world a solid when he gets there. With a giant vat of boiling oil or something.

  13. FangGore Avatar

Good. Bar him from any business in the EU as well.

    Big crybaby.

  14. swcollings Avatar

I’m a huge fan of punishing people for this kind of thing. If you don’t have a fundamental commitment to truthfulness you don’t have a civilization.

  15. Gardener_Of_Eden Avatar

    Seems like BS to me.

Politicians in every country lie and misrepresent facts all day everyday.

Fine all politicians $1Billion I guess. What a capricious and politically targeted ‘fine’.

    Don’t pay. Won’t pay.

  16. AshantiMcnasti Avatar

Fine him more.  Once he loses his “richest man in the world” status, you know he will fall apart.  He will get more desperate to become relevant again and make more mistakes.  Declare some absurd shit about how he figured a way to get to mars, hop on the ship, and then fuckin blow up when he accidentally goes the wrong way towards Venus.

  17. DAG1984 Avatar

Who exactly determines what ‘disinformation’ is?

  18. tmoeagles96 Avatar

Great start, but the fine should be higher and it would be cool if some jail time was attached

  19. thatindianredditor Avatar

I think it should be 10 times that. Destroying that man’s fortune is quite possibly one of the most important steps in ensuring global democracy survives the decade.

Of course, if someone wants to Gordian knot this shit and take out the man himself….

  20. QwertyLime Avatar

EU being against free speech? WOW who would hav guessed‽

  21. cocobodraw Avatar

Should be more but I’m biased bc I hate him

  22. DeceptiveGold57 Avatar

Ask Reddit? You mean ask the echo chamber?

  23. recrd Avatar

Honestly, great news, though it should have been for 100 Billion. Fines should be commensurate with wealth or they are toothless.

  24. MightyTaur Avatar

Elon is a liar, a manipulator, and a conspirator, and he uses bribery to convert followers. He should be locked up

  25. jnighy Avatar

Light. They should just block X

  26. TheDadThatGrills Avatar

Wouldn’t cutting out his tongue be a more appropriate response? At a minimum, he should be tarred and feathered. Holding him financially accountable for his actions is the same as not holding him accountable. This is like a millionaire dealing with a parking ticket.

  27. TNJCrypto Avatar

    Insufficient

  28. Scoobs_McDoo Avatar

I feel like we need to hit this fuck harder

  29. ShrimpRampage Avatar

Rookie numbers. You gotta pump those numbers up.

  30. newnameforanoldmane Avatar

1 billion dollars. He wouldn’t even notice that.

  31. Not-User-Serviceable Avatar

    It’s a start…

    I don’t think they’ll get it, though.

  32. Some_Number_8516 Avatar

It should be much much more. He didn’t buy twitter for the fun of it. He bought it to use as a microphone for right wing extremist bullshit. All of his companies should be banned outside of the U.S., not just twitter, because he is a proven bad actor. If you think he’s not going to play games with starlink too, you’re mistaken.

  33. technomat Avatar

If X did it then fine them, they could have moderators but ditched that idea so fine companies that don’t follow EU law.

  34. burner_duh Avatar

Likely deserved. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, lol.

  35. erebus49 Avatar

Not enough, X should be banned, He must be declared persona non grata

  36. DWedge Avatar

Should be more and ban him and all of his shitty products from EU.

  37. Curious_Working5706 Avatar

A: It sounds like the EU hasn’t been purchased by Putin.

  38. Dario0112 Avatar

Fine him 5% of his net worth

  39. trucorsair Avatar

Honestly that is pocket change to him, make it $100 billion it has to HURT to effect change

  40. noncommonGoodsense Avatar

    r/howdoyoufeelabout

  41. silverwitcher Avatar

Clown world. Who’s to say the EU isn’t filling us with disinformation. Every nation on earth controls the flow of information and controls the public narrative. Entire military regiments are dedicated to information warfare. I’m sure both musk and the EU are guilty of the same thing.

  42. Dako_79 Avatar

    Should be 2 billion

  43. spiked_macaroon Avatar

    It’s a decent start

  44. jezebel103 Avatar

I love the fact that he will be fined. I hate the fact that it is a) peanuts for him and b) X is not shut down completely, especially after the stunts he pulled in Germany and the UK.

We have enough problems in the EU without turning it into the shitshow that is the US. They are exporting their hateful and harmful ideologies and we have to put an end to it. Not only Musk but also those evangelical nutjobs funding European counterparts in their anti-abortion rhetoric.

  45. North_Experience7473 Avatar

It’s a good start in the right direction.

  46. deviltrombone Avatar

It isn’t nearly enough. It should be 1000x that for the damage Leon has done to the USA. His businesses should be seized, and he should be in prison.

  47. lasagnaburntmyface Avatar

X is a cesspool of racist garbage and should be blocked everywhere.

  48. Megafritz Avatar

I used to think that banning or fining a platform always is wrong, free speech is important.

But now I see that twitter is an environment where free speech is gone. If a user can not criticise the platform or their owner, it just just tool for propaganda. Therefore, I think Nazi-Twitter should be fined or even better, banned in the EU.

I love the EU but twitter is only about hate.

    Weg den Dreck!

  49. Neither_Wonder6488 Avatar

    How about $100 billion

  50. HowieO-Lovin Avatar

He was right when he said comedy is back, just not the way he intended…

  51. Illustrious-Meal5070 Avatar

Ban the new hitler musk. Had 2 Tesla’s both now gone. He should look at history and see where being an aggressive dictator gets you.

  52. imacmadman22 Avatar

Fine away. Ban X in Europe, hurt him some more.

  53. yemiz23 Avatar

Fuck!! I wish US were not the bad guys

  54. OkOpportunity4067 Avatar

How do you feel about garlic?

  55. star_tyger Avatar

I would prefer he didn’t pay and face more serious consequences. Like barring him and his companies from Europe.

  56. NotoriousBedorveke Avatar

    He is fined too little.

  57. Daryno90 Avatar

In support of it but the punishment should be harsher, it keep being shown to us that we can’t tolerate a misinformation campaign. People are letting their children get the measles because they think vaccines cause autism. Russian misinformation lead to Trump and Elon musk is trying to make the world a far worst place with his spreading misinformation

  58. FormerFastCat Avatar

$1B isn’t a big enough fine. That’s like taking 50c from a man with a $100 bill in his pocket.

  59. evangelineise Avatar

Seems light. They should tack on some inconvenience fees or something

  60. Orinaj Avatar

Every country should do it, by the time all of the fines go through he’ll just be worth 390 billion dollars

  61. puro_the_protogen67 Avatar

Add 4 more Zeros to the 1 and its perfect

  62. Trumpswells Avatar

A slap on the hand for Musk. The fine is commensurate with his great wealth

  63. Christopher135MPS Avatar

I feel like I’d be a lot happier if it was 10b. Per instance they’re found breaching the legislation.

Oh, that would put them out of business?

    What.

    A.

    Shame.

  64. ForeverYoung_Feb29 Avatar

What are they going to do if he doesn’t pay?

  65. DevilsLittleChicken Avatar

    It’s not close to enough.

  66. Renbarre Avatar

No one is above the law.

  67. SophonParticle Avatar

I love it. A billion dollars is a lot I don’t care how rich you are.

    It sends a message.

  68. solikelife Avatar

Elon Musk should be deported from Earth.

  69. NoOneStranger_227 Avatar

Make it ten and we’ll call it a good start.

  70. gordonf23 Avatar

    I think it’s a good start.

  71. FrozeItOff Avatar

Glorious. Should have been more. Enough to make him get out of the market throwing a tantrum like the spoiled man child he is. And this is coming from an American.

  72. Presidential_Rapist Avatar

He’s done a lot more than 1 billion in damage. Many of those ppl infected by his lies will not recover in their lifetime.

  73. p0tat0p0tat0 Avatar

    Good. More of this, please

  74. nipplesaurus Avatar

Those are rookie numbers. Gotta pump those up!

  75. PirateJohn75 Avatar

    It’s a good start

  76. Seaweed-Basic Avatar

It’s a start, but he needs to be in prison for all his crimes.

  77. yrokun Avatar

    Good start

  78. pussmykissy Avatar

He has over 400 billion dollars.

It’s like me having $400 in my pocket and giving a kid $1 for a glass of lemonade.

Of course, he will pay it to avoid his companies being banned.

    Fines do not bother billionaires.

  79. mac-dreidel Avatar

The amount of Americans in here who don’t understand how the EU doesn’t F around, treats workers with real rights, universal health, time off, etc and limits corporate influence…the US could learn a thing or two about having actual balls and representing their citizens.

  80. Personal-Bell-3420 Avatar

That’s a decent fine. Make him pay it or seize accounts to do so. And then watch him do it again. Another billion in fines, and so on.

  81. Zenchai Avatar

Definitely not enough, but it’s a good start. Nice to see someone holding others accountable for disinformation and it needs to extend to every President and policymaker. It’s crazy what these assholes are getting away with.

  82. AdhesivenessCivil581 Avatar

    It’s a good start.

  83. JoJackthewonderskunk Avatar

    Disappointed it’s only a billion

  84. RealAmbassador4081 Avatar

Every Country should do the same.

  85. openletter8 Avatar

It should be a fine of a percentage of his net worth.

  86. FrankyFistalot Avatar

I am totally fine with the fine…..

  87. TakenIsUsernameThis Avatar

I think we have to have a better understanding of what ‘speech’ really means when we talk about ‘free speech’ because I don’t think that spreading fake information in order to manipulate people should be considered speech.

  88. Johnny_english53 Avatar

He just won’t pay and then will get banned.

  89. jakegh Avatar

There’s no question that social media can be harmful. Very much so. The question is how you balance regulation against truly harmful content with political pressure to censor those with whom you disagree.

  90. Atalanta8 Avatar

Only 1 billion? That’s pretty cheap to buy the whole world essentially.

  91. picklerick8879 Avatar

Honestly? It’s about time someone called his bluff with actual consequences. Musk turned X into a free-for-all disinfo machine, wrapped it in “free speech,” and assumed no one would have the guts to push back. The EU just reminded him that if you profit off chaos, you’re not above the law — especially when that chaos undermines democracies.

  92. Left-Outside-1244 Avatar

He and Zuckerberg too. They are literally destroying democracy (which is their end goal).

  93. SickPuppy01 Avatar

Fair game IMO. Taxing these tech giants has proved very difficult and yet they are allowed to make billions in the EU and the UK. The US is always trying to pressure the UK and the EU to reduce taxes on these giants. If the shortcut to fixing the tax situation is maximizing fines then so be it.

  94. gwarrior5 Avatar

    too little too late

  95. Recidiva Avatar

    Happy to raise that higher.

  96. himalayangoat Avatar

Not enough. Twitter should be banned, it’s a cesspit.

  97. McRibs2024 Avatar

Rookie numbers. It needs to make a dent. 100 billion, and a timeline to correct or X is banned in the EU.

Countries need to be going to war vs musk. He’s a threat to the west

  98. Cielmerlion Avatar

    It should have been more.

  99. cookus Avatar

Now we know the cost of lying and spreading disinformation.

He has about all the power possible, seems like a good deal.

    not harsh enough.

  100. fussyfella Avatar

I would have a bit more sympathy for Musk and his so called hard core “free speech” assertions if X did not just ban people whenever he decides they do not agree with him.

As it is, the EU is one of the few institutions with the power to stand up to him and his friends in the White House’s bullying.

  101. croud_control Avatar

Governments need to recognize that any financial penalties must scale with the criminal’s wealth to have any meaningful impact. Otherwise, it becomes a punishment for the poor and a business expense for the wealthy. For a person living paycheck to paycheck, $5000 is devastating. For the wealthy, that’s splurging.

He needs to be struck even harder so that any future wannabe oligarch would think twice before doing stupid crap like this. The rich and stupid want to run the show. Put them in their place.

  102. Andrew5329 Avatar

Europe once again proving that they don’t have freedom of speech.

  103. Mattrad7 Avatar

Should be more. His disinformation has in part already cost the US trillions.

  104. Live_Wrongdoer_3665 Avatar

1 billion dollars won’t fix the damage he did in our society using disinformation.

  105. 923kjd Avatar

    It’s a nice start.

  106. Fragrant_Witness_713 Avatar

I wish people could be sued in the US for posting false information as he has done on purpose. It is not a limit on free speech. Free speech should have consequences. You can say or publish whatever you want, but free speech does not mean that afterwards there cannot be legal/civil ramifications. Further, you have to abide by a country’s laws if you do business there or if you visit, live or travel there. He makes sure he follows the rules or laws in China because it benefits him financially. So why shouldn’t he have to follow the laws of European countries?

  107. CanoegunGoeff Avatar

I’m tired of these wealthy pricks just being slapped on the wrist for seriously fucking shit up and committing crimes that would end regular peoples’ livelihoods.

I’m so tired of this “legal for a price” bullshit.

Ban him from doing business in the EU. Ban his platform in the EU. Ban his vehicles in the EU. Tax the fuck out of him. Put him in prison.

It should be “play by the rules, or you don’t get to play”.

  108. Helpful-Isopod-6536 Avatar

    Should be 100 billion.

  109. AgonistPhD Avatar

    It’s a start!

  110. ButterscotchReal8424 Avatar

Can we start calling it lies instead of misinformation?

  111. Darmok_und_Salat Avatar

    I love it!

These shit heads need a kick in the balls from everywhere, EU, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Korea, China…

  112. Bolognahole_Vers2 Avatar

Good. But its not enough. Elon admitted that he bought Twitter in order to control “the narrative”. Now he uses it to radicalize nazis. Fuck him.

  113. Xralius Avatar

It’s a tough problem of the modern world. Studies show disinformation / misinformation spreads further and faster on sites like Twitter. What does that mean for the future of media? How do we combat it? What do we do if someone is intentionally spreading disinformation?

And importantly: how do we balance that out with free speech?

  114. Aggressive-Ad-2180 Avatar

He’s a POS which is an insult to 💩

  115. throwawayrefiguy Avatar

It seems like a slap on the wrist, but a step in the right direction.

  116. ExcellentCustardKat Avatar

Not high enough. Not enough damage to him. Keep him out of everything. Take away his power and ability to go anywhere or buy anything.

  117. Direwolfofthemoors Avatar

    Musk should be arrested

  118. smaugbreath Avatar

    Why only $1 billion?

  119. Hefty_Purpose_8168 Avatar

According to google he makes around 54m a day, 1B is not high enough. It’s a good warning shot though.

  120. Chroniclyironic1986 Avatar

It should be more, and it should def include him personally as so much came from his personal twitter account. Should also include some high level regulations to prevent the same disinformation in the future with steep penalties for violations. He benefits from the lies, so make them expensive enough to negate those benefits.

  121. Galacticwave98 Avatar

They have better laws than the US has. That’s for damn sure.

  122. Mundane_Parking_708 Avatar

Should be 20billion. 1 billion is chump change. 20 billion is half what twitter is worth

  123. vites70 Avatar

Should have been more and asking him to go to trial in south Africa so we can finally rid ourselves of him in the US.

    Baby steps

  124. 1952Rustbelt Avatar

Not enough. Make it recurring with interest (say, recurring annually at double the prime rate) until he’s made full restitution. And add another 25% as punitive damages.

  125. YYC-Fiend Avatar

Why not each country in the EU?

  126. PublicCraft3114 Avatar

Companies have to follow the rules of the nation’s in which they operate. It’s an absolute no brainer. X deserves the fine.

  127. lessmiserables Avatar

I know reddit doesn’t want to hear this, but I really don’t like governments enacting penalties for “misinformation”.

There’s room for cases, like libel and slander and defamation, where the legal justifications are pretty narrow and have to be fully vetted.

Basically, do you want someone like Donald Trump to determine what is “disinformation”? Because someday the EU might have their own Donald Trump, and now they can levy billion-dollar fines to anyone they wish.

  128. baebae4455 Avatar

Should be higher for the generational impact and cost to society. The amount needs to be enough to bankrupt him and show it won’t be tolerated.

  129. gaoshan Avatar

Seems like kind of a low amount given how much disinformation he is responsible for.

  130. bchamper Avatar

We should do this in America. Fairness doctrine is needed, especially with the prevalence of social media and now AI. It is beyond clear that the populace is vulnerable to propaganda and needs to be protected from it.

  131. RedJerzey Avatar

I think that is fine, provided they are not just picking on him. Fine all news outlets for disinformation. Do not cherry pick.

  132. FalloftheKraken Avatar

If billionaires exist, and their influence is created by their money and wealth……their fines should be at a minimum 90% of their current wealth.

  133. uwillnotgotospace Avatar

When the punishment is only money, it’s legal for the right price.

  134. Mimir_the_Younger Avatar

Germany, specifically, doesn’t screw around with defamation/hate speech/holocaust denial or foreign surveillance.

  135. Jaexa-3 Avatar

    They should make that double

  136. 10247bro Avatar

LOVE IT. This is news to me

  137. Opening-Two6723 Avatar

20 billion and 1 year in jail.

    Fuck that nepo-pig!!!

  138. mcmgc2 Avatar

Should have fined him 10 times that for misinformation and everything else he’s done with DOGE
    F this guy

  139. Julia_SilkenBreeze Avatar

I would love for Europe to take the trash out.
