How do you get out of a depressive episode?

r/

I’ve been stuck in a rut for the past several weeks. None of the things I normally enjoy appeal to me and I just feel sort of numb. I’ve been getting out of the house, spending time with friends and family as much as possible, and exercising every day, but I still just feel so blah.

I have a history of depression but have not dealt with an extended period of feeling like this in many years. I thought I had grown out of it. But I just feel so empty and unmotivated to do anything. I’m trying to keep up my routine but it just feels like I’m going through the motions.

If you’ve gone through something similar, how do you get past it? Is there anything else I can do to snap out of it? I really want to get back to feeling like myself.

You gotta break down to break through. What helped me was figuring out why, on a larger scale, my body evolved to do this to me. Then I tried to figure out why, on a smaller scale, my body was shutting down. Usually there’s a reason. Could be as simple as needing more sunlight, could be something as complex as you need to turn your entire life around. In my case it was both. Took about a year and a half to turn the whole ship around.

When I was feeling depressed a while ago I bought myself a new matching workout set, got a gym membership with a sauna. Then started going to the sauna a few times per week. Eventually I worked up the energy to start exercising again and now I feel back to normal

Go for a swim in the cold ocean or do a cold plunge to remind yourself you’re alive.!

I know it’s hard. Maybe join some kind of class instead of just exercising. I joined my local community circus, it’s helped a lot.

    Have you considered Ketamine?

There are two things that pull me out of it: time in nature (preferably barefoot and near running water, always alone, and without any devices other than possibly a camera—if I take my phone it goes in airplane mode) and psychedelics (usually a microdose, occasionally a macrodose). Those are the only two things that work consistently for me.
