How can I be more assertive without being a jerk when the intention of the person in front is to somehow assign me the work which ideally belongs to them or someone else. Please tell me how can I stop being meek and be more firm/polite
How do you handle wordsmiths who try to push their work onto you?

I’m too busy with other projects. If you’d like to take care of one I’ll try to get around to your thing.
Just say no thank you.
Please send your request by email, so I can run it by my supervisor and find out what priority I should give it.
I can’t guess the context here at all, so this may or may not be applicable, but really the only response to coworkers (not managers/supervisors) trying to push work to you is “sorry, I have my own workload and don’t have the capacity to help with that project at the moment. Maybe (coworker), (coworker), or (supervisor) can provide support?”
If it’s getting egregious, bring it up to the relevant supervisor, manager, or HR.
Context. What’s a wordsmith? This doesn’t make sense.
Just say No.
There’s no overcoming an objection for a No
Say no.
Or just ignore the work and do your work, this would be interesting.
I say, “Sure, I can do that when you provide me A, B and C.”
A, B and C are the bulk of the work.
You’d be surprised how often that works. I know I was.
What is a wordsmith in this context
I’m not even sure what you’re going on about.
