How does focusing work?

Hi! You can be surrounded by hundreds of different sounds, voices, moving objects etc. and at the same time focus on only one of them, making all the rest of them nearly non existent. How does it work?

Practice, which is basically desensitising yourself to the environment. When I started playing competitions in pool a bug landing outside would distract me. Now I play within a bubble, like I’ve won a couple of finals where the bubble breaks as the last is sunk and I look up and get genuinely surprised at the size and noise of the group watching.

In short, humans can get used to most things, we have a lot of capacity for emotional robustness.
