How is it that i see so many USA soldiers filming like tiktoks or Instagram shorts during troop exercises or actual deployments or during service hours? How is that allowed?

r/

Like , i just saw a soldier in a helicopter filming a video for tiktok. Or i saw a YouTube short of a guy filming his friend waiving around a machine gun in a funny way. Or once I saw a guy who made a selfie while I presume what was guard duty. How are they getting away with that ? here in austria you would get punished severely If you even have a phone on you during service hours.

    Okay?

Maybe they did get punished for doing that. You’ll likely never know. It wouldnt stop them from making those videos

    That always surprises me too.

If you’re not on a data critical mission (like recon) you can use your phone just fine. If the mission calls for network silence then you would leave all smart devices behind but other than that, phone usage is fairly normal in the US army. We used to record videos of us doing dumb shit all the time. But again, it’s primarily mission dependent

Unless yaou’re deploying to a combat zone or in a country actively at war, regulating cell phone use outside of restricted areas, during sensitive activities isn’t really needed. Just like with any job you’d be expected not to use your phone while at work, unless you need to.

The amount of snuff military personal films could fill a large library. Military grunts share this stuff all the time. I saw a bunch just from a military wife.

The military warns about what service members can put on social media and monitors it. They will tell them when no filming is allowed. They don’t want to completely stop it because films of them having a good time is free advertising.

Personal phones are banned on forward operating bases and in secure areas (briefing rooms, communication centers, etc).

Phones are allowed on stateside bases or overseas bases in friendly nations (outside of those secure areas on base).

In cases where phones are allowed there isn’t anything to “get away with”, it’s an element of mutual trust. As long as all of the soldier’s core assignments get done and they’re being safe, it’s similar to having a cell phone at any other job.

Well, they’re trying to recruit 18 year olds and soon-to-be 18 year olds, where would you go to communicate with 18 year olds? TikTok perhaps?

Also depends on the chain of command like when I was in my unit would have fried us if we were posting stuff on social media but I was in a fast deploying combat unit.

Been a while since I was in, before TikTok was big, but basically they don’t restrict pictures/videos so long as sensitive information isn’t being shown.

This usually includes operation details or equipment schematics/manuals.

So long as it doesn’t include that kind of thing, I guess they see it as free propaganda.

If we didn’t have our phone during duty how would our commands notify us that our duty was extended?

Because even if they wanted to stop this behavior, they would probably have to like quadruple the budget of the entire military just to even put a dent in the problem. Tick tock is a very deep-rooted curse.

    1. OPSEC says you shouldn’t film any equipment. Thousands of guys jump everyday but we never see them walking off the back of a plane or ripping in its side current. When we do it’s a decent amount of trouble that you just never see or hear about.

    2. Austrians, like every other service member, are on tinder, porn websites, Amazon, watching anime, snap chatting, and making TikToks/ other videos.

You’re crazy if you think 18-22 year olds without parental or true adult supervision are doing everything they’re told. Joint Training exercises all over the world have dead camps filled with dudes from all counties playing gatcha games, hiding their phones light from an NCO, right now. Active combat zones also have people actively making memes or pretending to spray paint their teeth while screaming “WITNESS ME” as their buddy films them doing something stupid.

The world and all of its cultures may be different, but one things for sure: we all fucking love our phones and video taping shit.

As long as you’re not showing anything you really shouldn’t be showing it’s ok to post cool shit or take memories for morale

If you’re caught doing stuff on the clock you can be punished for it but it varys on what it is like every agrees the view from the helicopter is cool so we should share it

It kind of depends on what you’re doing: a lot of soldiers will carry things like phones, or even go pros and stuff, with them in the same way people in the past might have brought disposable cameras.

There are some things you would do where that strictly isn’t allowed, because of security reasons, but if you’re on a normal patrol or a training exercise, it’s usually only assholes who care (and media ops type people love selfies or videos of people in the field doing ally shit, or laughing and looking like they’re having fun, because it’s good for recruitment).

If you think this is bad, you should see the stuff the Israeli soldiers are putting out on the regular. Full on war crimes stuff to the point that an organisation (The Hind Rajab Project, named for a girl killed as part of some war crimes) have started to do stuff about it since nobody else will.

I mean it’s basically just like any other job. You technically aren’t supposed to/shouldnt but it’s really no big deal as long as you aren’t doing something important like being in the middle of a firefight or something…From what I hear, recruits in basic training get to have their phones at night or on the weekends lol

  19. Hollow-Official Avatar

It’s literally free advertising, why would they crack down on the practice?

  20. grumpy_grunt_ Avatar

There is stuff that we’re not allowed to post and areas that we are not allowed to film including any classified information, controlled unclassified information, and sensitive areas. Technical manuals, troop movements in combat zones, and secure compartmented information facilities are examples of these.

However posting other things is generally kosher, what intelligence could the enemy gain from a video of dudes goofing around with a machine gun?

How else are they gonna get their war plan or invasion orders on signal if they don’t have their cell phones?

Failure in leadership or they weren’t counseled. I tended to hear those two things.
