How long does Diesel fuel last?

r/

A Google search said Diesel goes off after a year, I’m wondering whether this is more to do with what it’s stored in? I want to store some fuel long term

All gas will only last for 6-12+ months. If you add stabilizer, it will be ok for 1-2+ years, but none of it can be stored for much more than 2 years.

Unless you are in a dramatised apocalypse show/film, and it lasts forever.

Storing fuel long term (longer than about 2 years) is unrealistic. As u/ommnian said, you can add stabilizer, but you still have a maximum shelf life of about 18 to 24 months.

Companies that have a diesel generator as backup (e.g. hospitals) need to run tests every few months and replace their reserve of fuel every 18 to 24 months as well.

That’s why many companies are now transitioning to natural gas generators – natural gas doesn’t require long term storage because it’s usually provided through national pipelines. And even if there is a major blackout, there’s enough gas pressure in the pipes that backup generators will still run for several days and can be used to power the pumps that will ensure that the gas infrastructure remains viable even if then national power grid is offline).

Non ethanol gas and especially diesel fuel will last a long time when stored properly. I’ve started equipment with 20+ year old diesel sitting in the tank. It won’t be the same as fresh gas or fresh diesel but it will work in a pinch. With diesel one of the biggest issues causing it to go bad in storage and become unusable is when bacteria that can grow and thrive in diesel form. Gasoline with ethanol (the regular gas you buy for your car) ruins a lot of stuff especially sitting in the carb, rubber fuel lines and in metal tanks. If I know something is going to sit for a long period of time I’ll run the last tank or two before storage with non ethanol gas.

You can store it much longer if you have a polishing and recirc system
