How many oranges is too muck?

r/

I ate 3 oranges today and my mom screamed at me. Said they have too much sugar. I went to Google, but all it told me was that it might lead to vitamin c overdose, that despite being sweet they actually have low Gi and that a recommended daily dose is 1-2. When I asked about eating 4 it just said a recommended serving size is 2 but didn’t say it was unhealthy to eat that many of them, so I am still wondering.

An orange is about 12 grams of sugar. So three is not exactly a healthy snack, but it would be a healthy dessert. Context matters. I’d say about 50g of sugar a day is a healthy target

well 4 oranges has about as much sugar as a can of soda.

But it’s not really the same because you’re taking it in more spaced out with added fiber and nutrients. If you look up sugar intake recommendations, most will specify *added* sugar because sugars in fruits aren’t really the same as processed foods. Generally easier for your body to process and will cause less of a spike in blood sugar.

Also vitamin C overdose would be like 12 oranges so you’re good.

I think it’d be more concerning the amount of acid it’s putting on your teeth, so i reckon just make sure you’re drinking a decent amount of water when you do eat them. Otherwise, if you want 3 or 4 oranges, yea it’s fine long-term health wise. If you eat too many more you’ll probably get a slightly upset stomach, at least I do.

To add: you’re supposed to get 2 servings a day of fruit, whether thats 1 serving of oranges and 1 serving of apples, or just 2 servings of oranges (~4 oranges total), doesn’t really matter much. All fruit has sugar.

Depends. If you’re eating them, 3 is too many. If they’re in control of the most powerful nation on earth, 1 is too many.

Health wise, you’re fine. The actual problem is that your mom is buying oranges so that she and the rest of your family can have oranges too. Not just so you can pig out on them and pound them all in a single afternoon

4 would probably give me acid reflux or shit my pants disease, I’d say as long as you feel fine don’t sweat it.

Excess Vitamin C just gets pee’ed out. Eating oranges has less impact than, for example, juicing them. Yes, there is a lot of sugar but there is also fibre so the sugar-load will be evened out. I wouldn’t worry but I also wouldn’t eat more in one sitting.

Eating too many oranges is just propaganda from Big Pirate so that you get scurvy and have to sail the high seas.

If you are a healthy young person you can eat as many oranges as you feel comfortable eating. If you have health concerns, then of course it’s wise to track the amounts of sugars and other nutrients. But if you have no special health concerns, go for it. Your mom might have a disordered relationship to food and she’s passing it on to you. Or maybe she just wanted those orange for herself!

There is less sugar in 3 oranges than there is in a can of soda.

Also vitamin C overdose is only really a concern with supplements, eating too many oranges might just give you diarrhea at worst.

Max recommended daily intake of vitamin C for an adult is 2,000 mg. An orange has less than 100mg. No danger of taking too much

Allergy and tons of acid irritating stomach.

Although the RDA for Vitamin C is a smidge over what you find in a single orange (about 70mg in an orange, RDA for men 90mg), vitamin C has a really high threshold before you need to worry about toxicity.

The Mayo Clinic recommends you don’t consume more than 2000mg of vitamin C per day (29 oranges)

    4 oranges are fine

Unless you are diabetic eating three oranges as an isolated case is completely meaningless, even then as someone pointed out a single can of soda would have way more sugar.

Eating three oranges in a day (every once in a while) isn’t unhealthy, but being screamed at by your mother is.

As a mom, I’d say there’s o such thing as eating too much fruit. The more the healthier!

… Well obviously common sense applies, don’t try to eat a literal truckload.

Between the lines, she’s saying that oranges are super expensive and everyone deserves them not just one family member. They do have a lot of sugar though if that’s a concern.

My 80 year old neighbor loves oranges and she eats 3 to 4 whole oranges in one sitting. She’s very healthy and lives independently and drives around herself helping take her decades younger friends to hospital visits. She’s barely sick and I personally think it’s because she loves her fruit.

I think after 3-4 oranges it’s too much and not from sugar… if these are full sized like navel oranges I got the WORST heartburn (which I never get) and thought I was dying but that’s the only thing that happened. Won’t die but not fun. This was in one sitting tho so maybe over the course of a day it might be different?
