I was talking with a colleague and they are in their last year of the program. They said they have 12 publications.
They said some are peer reviewed, but not all.
Just to clarify, peer reviewed publications are considered to have more weight in academia?
Also, the same goes for conferences. Is there a set amount?
I keep hearing different arguments:
1. “Quantity over quality”
2. “As long as you have one strong article”
3. “Some universities only care about numbers and not quality”
I also wanted to ask- do different publications have more weight over others. For example an academic article that is peer reviewed over a book review or a translation, etc etc…
I know this isn’t black or white. I am confused because I have an absent advisor and don’t know who to ask this to.
I am in the humanities and I understand it works differently for STEM fields. But I still want to hear different perspectives. Thank you.
