I missed one during my driving test. I forgot to turn my blinker on when I was leaving a parking spot on the road.

    I passed second time. Hesitancy.

    I never took a test!

In Canada I took a written test and got my “beginner’s licence” (G1). I moved to the US for university and showed them my Canadian licence. It looked like a full driver’s licence and no one bothered to ask what “G1” meant and they gave me a full USA state licence.

Later, I moved back to Canada and showed them my USA state licence and they gave me my full Canadian licence.

At no point did I take a road test.

This was 20+ years ago and I’ve never been in an accident or even gotten a ticket knock on wood

    Passed on the first try

  11. Ok_Dog_4059 Avatar

1 got my license on my 16th birthday. Had to take my test in the snow though.

2, I failed immediately the first time when trying to turn right out of the parking lot onto the street. Apparently I went out too far before turning; there were cars parked by the curb, which made it hard for me to see oncoming traffic.

Twice. I cried the first time.

    Actual driving test? Once.

One. And I had to parallel park a 17 foot long 4 door Pontiac Catalina..

I’m Australian, so we have multiple restricted licences.

My “learner” licence, which us a theory test, that i didn’t study for, took my 9 goes.

My “provisional 1” or “red Ps”, is a driving test, I got it on the first go.

My “provisional 2” or “green Ps” is a reaction test, and i didn’t fully understand the test, so it took me 2 goes.

Then I moved from NSW to ACT, and when I renewed my licence, I went back to me “red Ps” for 2 weeks, than got my full, unrestricted licence.

Then my motorcycle licence, 1st go on both Ls, and RE

lol, 4th time was a charm 😊 Never had an accident since though.

  18. ton80rt Avatar

Twice. The first time was in my mother’s 1986 Cadillac Fleetwood and the parallel parking was a bitch. The 2nd time was in a rented Honda Civic. Aced it.

  19. Soft-Routine1860 Avatar

First try. Road test was in upstate NY. It lasted 2 mins (no exaggerating).

The only thing I missed was my turn signal pulling away from the curb.

  20. Jennyelf Avatar

I took it one time, nearly had an accident, failed and was too intimidated to ever try again.

  21. thatthatguy Avatar

I had one practice and then passed the first real exam. This is not everyone’s experience and it’s okay if you need more practice.

  22. the_doctor_808 Avatar

Unfortunately for me it was 4. Im a great driver but ran into some weird circumstances that resulted in a fail. One of them was at a red light and an ambulance came up from behind. I moved over just a few feet to make room for the ambulance and got a fail for running the red.

  23. FancyMigrant Avatar

    One.

The time between re-tests should start at one month, and then increase exponentially for each successive failure. It’s crazy that we have drivers who failed their test more than ten times on the road.

  24. Sad-Time-5253 Avatar

One, only things I got comments on were my braking was a little sudden and my throttle control was touch and go. That was like 18 years ago, curious to see how I drive when I get back to the states after 9 months of not driving lol

  25. Forever_In_a_Sweater Avatar

Once, never was book smart so twice for the book part

  26. papa-hare Avatar

    Lol it depends.

I took it once in my home country where I had to take it on a stick shift and they took me on a hill for my test. Nobody had told me that if you keep the clutch pressed the wheels rotate freely (in fact the instructor had told me there’s no downside to keeping the clutch pressed 🤷‍♀️) so we were gaining speed when going downhill and the officer next to me had to press the brake himself cause I didn’t understand what was happening. Didn’t fail me immediately, but I was in no condition to pass the rest even if I had a chance.

I got it on the second try.

And then I took the test in Kansas City MO 7 years later. I had driven a U-Haul (truck, but automatic) from NY to STL and from STL to KC and I was currently renting a car. I didn’t tell them though, they thought I was driving it with someone else in the car and that I was using the learner’s permit. I did very well. I even parallel parked on the left side of a one-way street perfectly even though I’d never thought to try that. Anyway, a car made a left on red in front of me and I stopped. Apparently not fast enough for the person administering the test. Fuck her, if I hadn’t stopped in time there would have been an accident, wouldn’t there?! Anyway she failed me by 1 point. And killed my self confidence. I returned that rental car 3 days early and had to find someone to carpool with to work, I couldn’t afford to take a cab to work, and KC doesn’t have anything resembling public transportation. I passed the test the second time, of course.

So, the second time, twice lol.

I now live in NYC and never drive, but I’ve never been in an accident or anything and drove every day for 3 years. Plus the above very long U-Haul trips.

  27. Lonelybidad Avatar

Once, but I was told to turn left while leaving the parking lot. So what did I do? Did you say turn, right? Yelp! That was me.

  28. iammonos Avatar

    Once.
However, because of my dad and his short fuse for patience and me not doing things “his way”, caused me to go through 7 practice permits.
I knew how to drive…..but with him in the car, my brain would just go kaput, so on my last permit, I never had him in the car. Then after my road test he had the audacity to say “I didn’t think you’d pass on the first try”. 🙄

I think on the 6th time i passed driving school theory then first timed the government theory exam.

Passed driving school practical exam 2nd try and also 2nd timed the government practical exam.

Before i started taking driving lessons i, no joke, absolutely seriously, thought i was too stupid and inattentive to get a licence and let alone drive in the real world but here i am, got everything done in november and driving isn’t a problem really (fuck parking with no cameras or sensors tho)

    1. followed my mom’s advice; know where everything is in the vehicle (wipers, lights, signals, defoger, etc) drive defensively, signal, turn your head to look at the mirrors and blind spot. complete stop at stopsigns.

minor mistake was I drove 10 miles under the speed limit in an unmarked residential area. but better less than more.

  31. CarelessStatement172 Avatar

Once for the written. Once for the practical. I was 1-point away from failing both.

  32. incognito-idiott Avatar

Once for regular vehicles and once for motorcycles

  33. Griffythegriff Avatar

Where I live, if you ace the written test you didn’t have to take the driver test. I ace the written, When I joined the army I had to take the military drivers course and take both the written and the driver test.

One time but I hit the curb doing a 3 point turn in my moms car which was a Camaro, which is really low to the ground and a bitch to drive. He let me try again and I passed

One, twice to get my learner’s permit though.

  37. Jazzlike_Spare4215 Avatar

First try and as far as I know it was flawless but the instructor had failed everyone up to me and the girl before me was crying when leaving the car so was a bit scary

I was incredibly nervous leading up to my test. Had a lesson beforehand then, when we arrived at the test centre, my instructor told me how to lock the car (which I’d never had cause to do before). I followed the instructions but what he hadn’t said was that I needed to take the keys with me and we were locked out. I went in to tell the examiner while the instructor ran off to find someone to get the car open. Within a few minutes he’d been successful and the sense of relief completely calmed my nerves and I passed first time.

I had been driving since I was 14, but after taking a high school driver training class — which I got kicked out of in the ’80s, I decided to just go take the test while everything was still fresh in my mind. I passed the written part without any issues.

The driving test was with the state’s only female trooper, who inspected my parents’ car before we started. Turns out, the blinkers and brake lights weren’t working properly. She asked if I still wanted to continue, it was about 20°F outside, and I could tell she was ready to fail me on the spot.

I decided to go for it. I did everything she asked, driving with my window rolled down and using hand signals the entire time. I think I surprised her when I even used the proper hand signal to back into the parking spot at the station.

She passed me and just told me to get the lights fixed.
