How often do you update your wardrobe?

r/

Like to stay on trend and such. How often do you buy new clothing, get rid of clothing, buy new makeup, accessories, shoes, etc?

Whenever I need something specific, or when I see something I really like. No fixed timeframe.

A couple years ago I discovered Shein and bought clothes once a month to take advantage of points/coupons, but eventually the buzz passed and I went multiple months without buying anything. Now I’m pregnant, so I keep outgrowing clothes and buy stuff here and there when needed (shorts, dresses, PJs, etc)

I don’t update the whole lot very often at all. The last time was maternity as I needed maternity clothes.

I do add and remove pieces, but I have my classic good fit jeans, workout clothes, tailored suits, shirts, and shirts as well as a fair few causal tops.

I in general only buy wenn stuff is wornout or turned real ugly. Only occasionally it will happy I buy stuff just as extra. And often it is second hand. (Not underwear, socks, bra’s or shoes)

The stuff I do buy mostly is timeless.

Specific events, I will borrow or buy cheap cheapest. I am not the girly type, I don’t own skirts or dresses.

I’m going through a major refresh as we speak.

I came out of the Mormon church when I was 19, and I’d internalized their really strict modesty standards for women. I’d never worn a top that was form-fitting or cut below my collarbones. I’d never worn sleeves higher than my elbows, or pants that are cut above the ankle.

Took me years of therapy to get past that, and I’m perfectly fine today dressing like an actual woman. I’m slowly introducing the occasional outfit that would have had me slut-shamed as a Mormon. (“Exposed shoulders! Oh no!”)

I don’t. If I do buy new things, it’s because I need it. I try not to buy into rampant consumerism, so as long as my clothes are still in good condition, I will be sticking with them. When summer comes I usually find that I need some things, same with winter. But I never fully update my wardrobe, especially for fun. Trends are just that, they come and go, so I don’t see any point in spending hard earned money on something that will be out of style by the time I can afford it.

I do however like to spend good money on “staple” clothing such as leggings, turtlenecks, jeans, and sneakers. But I spend quality money on them because I expect them to last me a few years, and they do.

My weigh has changed significantly in the last years. I lost weight, got pregnant, became postpartum and the ended up at almost exactly my pre-preg weight.

I’ve bought clothes every 6-8 weeks ever since then. I’m sick of it lol

I usually sort/donate clothes and shop twice a year, when the weather switches from cold to warm and vice versa.

I don’t follow trends. I just wear what I like regardless of if its “in” or not. I mostly buy new stuff to replace old stuff to try to limit how much accumulates in my closet, but if I see something that I really like I will get it, even if I don’t really need it.

  8. drunkenknitter Avatar

Whenever something’s ripped or stained beyond repair or used up. I don’t really follow trends, I just buy things as needed.

  9. biodegradableotters Avatar

I don’t purposefully update it at all. I even still like and wear stuff I was wearing as a child like 20 years ago. That’s not to say that I never buy any trends, but just wearing what I like is my goal and not to stay updated on the latest trends.

  10. TumblingTardigrade Avatar

I don’t follow trends. I update things as and when I need or want to. There is no consistency to it. I try and operate on a “one in, one out” system and to donate or give away things whilst they’re still in good condition.

  11. Larkfor Avatar

I don’t do it to stay on trend. I will however incorporate things I see out in the world or on the runways if I like them sometimes, but not entirely. You’ll never find me head to toe in ‘trendy’ or even ‘going to become trendy in a year or two’. I choose elements I like.

I have a strict budget for clothing so lately I’ve been focused on buying duplicates or similar to my favorite pieces so I have a ‘fresh’ one for the year or decade the one I wear a lot wears out and can’t be mended to look and feel otherwise.

Clothing swaps, thrift stores, vintage shops, and occasional couture pieces are what I like to find or purchase. I also like to modify or mend existing pieces. Crop a top, add sleeves to something. I’m not a genius with a needle so usually I cut something or add an element (like back-connected sleeves) that I can put on over the dress/top. I also like to dye clothing in the washing machine with fabric dye (I had an old top in a color that wasn’t deep enough for me so I dyed it black).

Also, if you can fit into the sizes, movie prop auctions can be an incredible way to get designer goods for less. I got a pair of Manolo Blahniks for less than $100 and it included a screen-used dress, foundations, and accessories. The dress was not designer but it was custom. Also the Blahniks had never actually been worn as the actress ended up being a different size and the ‘screen worn’ shoes she kept for herself as a memento.

For makeup it depends. My staples I replace as they run out (this could be months or years before I need to replace them, also be aware of when it’s healthy to toss old cosmetics, don’t keep them too long for health reasons).

I custom blend my own lipstick colors so when I create one I usually re-buy a base I like and the add new colors or favorite existing ones.

Fragrances I only need to purchase once every half a decade. I’ll try something new and fashionable but tend to stick to my favorite notes and companies.

I toss clothing usually only if it’s in poor condition and can’t be easily mended by me. If it’s expensive and/or beloved I may pay to have it tailored professionally.

Otherwise I donate, and sell on consignment or offer to friends or bring to the aforementioned clothing swap.

I don’t stay on trend, wear what you want. I don’t shop often just when I need something. The clothes I buy last a long time because I choose quality over quantity

  13. Some_Girl_2073 Avatar

Whenever old things wear out beyond repair/ functional use

  14. ThrowRARAw Avatar

I don’t try to stay on trend or anything but sometimes the clothes I like happen to be on trend.

A lot of the time I try to buy up with major sales. Generally its EFOYS (for winter clothes) and Boxing Day Sales (for Summer clothes). If there’s something I really like I’ll buy it straight away or still wait for it to go on sale. Clothes are expensive.

  15. brunetteskeleton Avatar

I still have socks and shirts from middle school.

  16. poontangpooter Avatar

It’s almost seasonal, when the weather changes I go through and make notes of clothes I no longer like/degrading in quality/or just whatever I would like more of and then I’ll pick up a few pieces as desired. So like now it’s warming up and I’ve noticed I don’t have a lot of loungewear type shorts so that’s what I’ll look around for.

  17. Connie_Damico Avatar

    A lot.

I’m kind of obsessed with fashion and really enjoy dressing well. I get multiple things each month unless I’m sitting on my hands deliberately not shopping. I’m a big dress for my body type and color season person, and unfortunately I’m finally just getting the hang of both of these in the last few years so there’s been several major closet purges in the past few years, especially to get rid of dated millennial pieces and updating with actually current stuff.

  18. SkwerlyBird83 Avatar

Hardly ever! I live in scrubs or athletic apparel…

  19. nancysweetyq Avatar

I do this very rarely, once a year or two, I’m too lazy to look for something, but if I do, I buy so many clothes, as if for the last time haha

  20. cauldron-boil-me Avatar

I kind of like to have an outfit for every type of vibe/situation/occasion so i have a lot of clothes but I am also always looking. but I don’t usually get rid of stuff until it’s stained/ ripped etc. I like to shop at thrift stores and have found some really good pieces at Goodwill, even a Dior sweater!

  21. Mazikeen369 Avatar

I don’t. When my clothes wear out I replace. When my boots wear out I replace. I don’t wear make up, so that’s nothing I’m wasting money on to buy and continue replacing. I’ve never known what the trends were, I just wear what’s comfy and what I could also work in and my every day cloths are also my work cloths.

  22. Dr__Pheonx Avatar

I keep on doing it constantly. But not according to trends or anything. It’s always something I’m confident and comfortable in.

I don’t get rid of anything actually speaking. It’s all either in the category of being discarded by disuse or it’s just lying around and forgotten.

  23. Spiritual_Lemonade Avatar

My wardrobe goes 12-16 weeks in rotation and then some things get packed away. Some things hang around for 24 weeks or longer.

Some items are made just for season so I don’t wear them out of season.

I refresh here and there but because I’m buying good stuff it holds up and looks pretty timeless.

Next month I can start wearing pinks again.
Then we put away the black pants and go now khaki and green.

  24. ClerkSuspicious5235 Avatar

I haven’t since 2020 when I started working from home. Previously, I would do so every few years and only for trendy pieces to pair with my staples.

  25. Plant-Hoarder-61 Avatar

I never used to buy clothes and wore what I had until it was unwearable, but I got back into thrifting. So when I find something I like and it is at a price I’m comfortable with, normally under $10, I buy it. I only buy quality clothes now that will last years. So every week or two weeks I’m adding a piece or two to my wardrobe.

  26. Shot_Mycologist2713 Avatar

I’m definitely in the minority here. I loves clothes and shoes….. so often….. Gym clothes, fancy clothes (which I never leave my house but JUST IN CASE THE RIGHT MOMENT PRESENTS ITSELF!!!), seasonal clothes, ahh I’m embarrassed.

  27. honeyghoulsx Avatar

Idk, whenever I want new band merch. But I really just add to my wardrobe, I don’t overhaul it

  28. MichaelaRae0629 Avatar

I’m currently updating mine because I got a nice raise a year ago. I’m finally getting on my feet after years of financially struggling. I’ve been wearing the same kohls clearance sweater that I got in 2016 for $5.

I’m finally replacing a lot of the things that are worn out and don’t fit me very well. I want to start doing more regular shopping though. Maybe 1 or 2 times a year.

  29. Natataya Avatar

I’m a med student, my wardrobe consists in scrubs and comfy shoes.

  30. WillowLocal423 Avatar

I don’t really follow trends, but I do slowly update pieces as the seasons go. I try to focus on capsule pieces for versatility, but occasionally treat myself to some wonderful dresses.

If I do see something that is absolutely ‘me’ though, I will get it! Within reason of course.

Each springtime I’ll donate whatever I haven’t worn in 2 years.

  31. Desperate-Exit692 Avatar

I don’t stay on trend. I buy things I like and that I can wear. A good thumb rule for me is imagining 3 places I can wear something to, unless it’s a lil whimsical thing that brings me joy.

I don’t throw away things. Any clothing becomes a “home outfit” then becomes either a donated item to orphanages or gets worn a few 100 more times and becomes a rag.

Makeup is bought when my older ones are either over or expired. Shoes are repaired if broken. Earrings tho I have a soft spot for, so I buy whatever I like whenever I like.

  32. Amantyde Avatar

    Whenever I can lol

  33. Polybrene Avatar

    Bout once every 40 years.

  34. SCCKZY27 Avatar

Maybe like 1 to 3 times a month. If for example I’m at target buying groceries and I see a cute shirt I’ll buy it too.

  35. Mitaslaksit Avatar

    Update?
    I buy quality.

  36. kelowana Avatar

I have never followed a trend. When I buy clothing, I buy what I like, not what other people like. And when I get rid of clothing, it’s because they don’t fit anymore or are old and worn out. Same with everything. No trends, just me being me.

  37. LLG126 Avatar

More than I should- I’m always adding staple pieces. Each season, I tend to add fun pieces…especially for the warmer months.
