How popular is Apfelschorle in the US?

In Germany is it very popular, myself sometimes drinking after Sport (for example Football, Hiking, Basketball etc.) besides Water obviously.

That’s Apfelschorle;

“It consists of carbonated mineral water and apple juice.[2] The broader category Fruchtschorle consists of any fruit juice mixed with carbonated water, but Apfelschorle is by far the most common. Spritzer (that is, wine mixed with carbonated water) is called Weinschorle.

A glass of Apfelschorle.”

I have literally never heard of it, but last night I had a lemonade + Sprite mixture, which I suppose is a similar idea

  4. ZimaGotchi Avatar

People here drink Gatorade or other “sports drinks” after sport.

  5. theniwokesoftly Avatar

Loved it in Germany. Have never seen it here.

  6. TheBimpo Avatar

    I’ve never heard of it.

  7. raysebond Avatar

You never see it here. Schade.

  8. BoldBoimlerIsMyHero Avatar

I always order it at a German restaurant I love. We have sparkling cider here that is similar (or maybe the same). We buy that regularly.

  9. Gladyskravitz99 Avatar

This is the first I’ve heard of it. And it sounds pretty unappealing, actually.

  10. sto_brohammed Avatar

Americans don’t consume remotely as much carbonated water as Germans do.

  11. winteriscoming9099 Avatar

It’s certainly never called that here. Juice and sparkling water isn’t particularly common, but it’s easy to make a version of it. My dad loves carbonating juices with his sodastream.

Normally though you’d have water or some kind of sports drink (ie gatorade) after sport.

  12. leeloocal Avatar

If it’s like the Apple soda in Mexico, not popular. But there are a ton of brands in Mexico and I LOVE IT.

  13. Scoutain Avatar

I have only ever had it when I visited Germany and thought ‘huh apple juice soda. Not a fan’.

  14. Competitive_Box6719 Avatar

I think the most comparable thing over here is Sparkling (insert fruit here) Juice. I don’t have it often, it’s mostly used at special events when alcohol isn’t desired.

  15. thatsad_guy Avatar

I’ve never heard of it, but I would try it.

  16. MacaroonSad8860 Avatar

In some of the U.S. it’s called a spritzer and it can be any flavor of juice with sparkling water (which I know is also true in Germany, despite Apfelschorle being the most common).

  17. WichitaTimelord Avatar

You would have to go out of your way to find it I am afraid. I bought some at the tiny German grocery store.

  18. SacredGay Avatar

Sparkling apple cider, which isn’t apple cider mixed with mineral water but rather carbonated apple juice, is a common child-friendly alternative to alcoholic apple cider and wine for special occasions.

Mineral water isn’t popular here. Anything based on mineral water would be a strong “no” from us.

  19. TipsyBaker_ Avatar

My family gives something similar to the kids at the big holidays. They think it’s super fancy.

The only people I know who are familiar with it are people who have lived or traveled extensively in Germany. Most are military or the children of military members. When I’ve described it to people who aren’t familiar with it, the main reaction is mild bafflement that someone would go out of their way to make that, let alone that there’s a word/name for it

There was a period for about a year where a grocery store near me had the gerolsteiner premixed apfelschorle, but I’m reasonably convinced I’m the only person who ever purchased it. It’s section on the shelf never seemed to get restocked, and after I took the last bottle one day it never reappeared.

I think it’s also worth pointing out that most Americans aren’t big fans of (unflavored) sparkling mineral water. There are enough of us who DO like it that it’s easy enough to find, but it’s not ubiquitous like it is in most of Europe. So people don’t just happen to have it on hand to make schorle.

  23. ophaus Avatar

Zero popularity. Never even heard of it.

  24. PrestigiousJelly6478 Avatar

Flavored seltzer water like La Croix (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Croix_Sparkling_Water) is the most similar thing here in the US and quite popular. Also comes in alcoholic versions, usually ~5% ABV.

  25. machagogo Avatar

First I have heard of this

  26. cherrycokeicee Avatar

I have never heard of this, but I would definitely try it.

  27. InuitOverIt Avatar

Never heard of this term but my family does drink a lot of flavored seltzer waters. Most of them just have artificial flavors (brands like Polar, LaCroix, Buble). Some have a small amount of juice, like Spindrift. Seltzer in general has really picked up in popularity in the last 10-15 years; growing up, I never saw anybody drinking carbonated water. Only at very fancy restaurants will they ask if you want still or sparkling water, though most places will have some available if you ask.

Tangentially, hard seltzer with fruit juice has really blown up the last couple years, especially the brand High Noon, which is vodka, seltzer water, and juice.

  28. BeerWench13TheOrig Avatar

Never heard of it. The closest thing to it I’ve had is pomegranate juice with ginger ale (and vodka or rum).

  29. ProfuseMongoose Avatar

It sounds great but the name is completely unfamiliar. I had to look this up but I found out that fruit juice flavored sparkling water outsells unflavored sparkling water in both the US and Canada. For example Le Croix uses all natural fruit flavors in it’s water, San Pellegrino makes flavored sparkling water, etc.

  30. rco8786 Avatar

Never heard of it. Sounds good

  31. Dogbit699 Avatar

    We don’t have it here

We have apple sodas and fizzy non alcoholic cider if you’re interested though

  32. SkyPork Avatar

Never heard of it. Which is weird, because I started making it for myself regularly like ten years ago. I honestly thought I kinda made it up. I swear as I get older it gets clearer that I was a very European dude in a previous life.

  33. cmcrich Avatar

I just heard about this on a YouTube video. It sounds nice.

Never had it and never heard of it. Had to look it up. Doesn’t sound all that yummy.

  44. GoodbyeForeverDavid Avatar

Never heard of it but we frequently mix water with juice in our house for our kids because we don’t want to give them all that sugar. My wife started doing it with carbonated water and calls it her “mom-mosa”. She’s pregnant and can’t drink alcohol. So that’s her replacement. Now I’m doing it occasionally too!

  45. gfunkdave Avatar

Apfelschorle does not exist in the US.

  46. ostrichesonfire Avatar

I’ve never heard of that in my life, but I think the most similar thing we might have normally would be sparkling apple cider? It’s not alcoholic, it’s really more like carbonated apple juice.

  47. BlackshirtDefense Avatar

Nobody drinks it. My family is German and nobody drinks it.

  48. DoubleSpoiler Avatar

I do this personally, with various fruit juices. I don’t think it’s a super common thing, nor can you like, get it at the store or restaurant.

Flavored sparkling water became popular over here recently. Spindrift is a brand that is natural fruit juices/flavors in the sparkling water, those types of drinks are probably the closest one would get.

  49. unsurewhatiteration Avatar

I understand the thing you are describing, but I’ve actually never once seen it in the US. That said, since we have so many communities influenced by various immigrant populations I’m sure there are places where it is common. Just nowhere I’ve lived.

  50. JAK3CAL Avatar

Never. But Americans love sparkling flavored water, especially the womenfolk

  51. Paperwife2 Avatar

I’m guessing it’s like a wine cooler (do they even make that anymore?) or wine spritzer…they have been popular in my circles over most of my life (GenX). I no longer drink alcohol but I do drink flavored sparkling water or make my own by mixing a splash of juice or a mixer with sparkling water.

  52. rutherfraud1876 Avatar

Never heard of this but have invented it on my own

  53. Playful_Fan4035 Avatar

If it’s anything like Manzanita Sol (an apple soda that my colleague from Mexico drank almost daily), I tried it once, but I didn’t like it.

I’ve never heard of the German word, though.

  54. Fillmore_the_Puppy Avatar

I’ve only heard of it because of doing German Duolingo. 😄 But as others have said “sparkling apple juice” (name brand: Martinelli’s) is very popular here for kids and also adults who want something nonalcoholic and festive on holidays.

  55. KR1735 Avatar

I’ve never heard of it. But I have had it. Growing up, my mom would often add a little bit of Sprite or 7-Up to my juice in the morning to make a breakfast mocktail (usually it was cranberry, orange, and 7-Up). I do this for my son now. Takes 10 seconds and it’s like having a fancy drink for breakfast before school.

You can get carbonated apple juice during the holiday season. That’s pretty common around where I’m from in the Midwest. Not sure if it’s related to this, but the Midwest does have a very large German diaspora.

  56. Sir_Sir_ExcuseMe_Sir Avatar

Basically non-existent (but I do fucking love it). Closest thing we have widely available is probably Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider (non-alcoholic)

  57. offbrandcheerio Avatar

Never heard of it. But it looks/sounds delicious.

  58. ibejeph Avatar

Never heard of it but now I want to try it. Hello from California 👋

  59. FalconPorterBridges Avatar

Sparkling apple juice is used as a wine/champagne replacement for events and holidays.

Izzy’s are sparkling fruit juices. I see them here and there. Not as popular as sports drinks or other sodas.

  60. bryku Avatar

Carbonated Water isn’t very common in the USA like it is in Europe. Even in mixed drinks it isn’t used as much.

That being said “Sparkling Water” can be found at most grocery stores. It is carbonated water with “fruit flavoring” and a sweetener. It is often seen as a “health drink” (compared to soda pop), so it typically has alternative sweenteners instead of sugar.

It sort of seems like it is disappearing. There used to be 5ft of space dedicated to it, but the stores near me only have a few shelves no days. I’m not sure if it is just my area, but it seems to be lossing popularity.

“Spritzer” do exist here, but aren’t very common. They contain Carbonated water and wine. Sometimes the wine will be swapped out with a fruit flavoring to make non-alcoholic drinks.

  61. MuscaMurum Avatar

Americans drink apple Martinelli’s if they need a non-alcoholic alternative to champagne for a toast or something. It’s not an everyday drink and is pretty sweet, but comes in a champagne-like bottle.

  62. WellWellWellthennow Avatar

Not at all, never heard of it nor have seen it here.

We have sparkling juices that are bottled like champagne as a fancy alternative to alcohol for special events for non-alcohol drinkers – that’s about it.

I love it and I make it sometimes during the summer. . But the only reason I know about Apfelschorle because I lived in Germany for several years. I found it the most refreshing drink after a long hike in the Alps. The first time I ever had it was at a restaurant by the Eibsee gondola station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Otherwise, its a drink almost unknown in the US.

  66. soulsista04us Avatar

I have heard of it and I’ve mixed my own apple juice with my soda stream water. It’s ok, my favorite is grapefruit juice with sparkling/sodastream water.

  67. Standard-Outcome9881 Avatar

  70. BoseSounddock Avatar

I only know about it after visiting Germany. I love it and luckily I have a little German deli/market that’s attached to a German restaurant and they keep a well stocked supply. I buy it monthly.

It’s not popular at all with the general US population however.

  71. Colseldra Avatar

99% of people don’t know what that is probably

I got a bunch of free LaCroix and don’t want to drink it

  72. Kestrel_Iolani Avatar

    Apfelschorle?

    Geseundheit?

  73. ElysianRepublic Avatar

Not popular at all. Most people have never heard of it, that said, Giant Eagle (my local supermarket chain) did carry the Gerolsteiner brand for a while. I was probably one of the few who bought it regularly.

Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider is pretty easy to find (but different since it’s not watered down), and popular as a wine substitute for kids at New Year’s or wedding parties, though.

  74. waltzthrees Avatar

I get it when I’m in Germany but it’s definitely not a thing in the US. I’ve seen it at a couple of German import stores but it’s pricy.

  75. Littleboypurple Avatar

Genuinely never heard of this before. So it’s just apple juice with sparkling water? Honestly i’d rather have some non-alcoholic Sparkling Cider instead

  76. katmoney80 Avatar

It is my favorite German non alcoholic drink! Never heard of it before my first visit and I’ve never seen it in the US.

  77. reveal23414 Avatar

In Germany only, as others have said. Although I do have a habit of mixing a can of plain seltzer and a bit of juice, particularly in summer – and I just realized I’m the only one in my house who does this. i’ve never seen my friends do it.

I bet Germany is where I picked it up, long ago.

  82. seditious3 Avatar

I’ve had it in Germany. Never in the US.

  83. LeahHacks Avatar

I had some Appletiser when I visited London and it was delicious, super refreshing. I wondered why it isn’t sold in the US. I don’t think I ever really see carbonated apple juice in the US. Except maybe a sparkling apple cider that some may have for New Years as an alternative to champagne.

  84. Anthrodiva Avatar

No one makes it or knows what it is. I love it, but I lived in Germany 🙂

  85. sabatoa Avatar

I’d never heard of or had it prior to visiting Germany, but God, I loved it so much that I bought soda stream so that I could make it here at home

  86. Beginning_Cap_8614 Avatar

I mixed some myself last week and thought I had made up a new drink.

  87. brookish Avatar

I am wondering if this is more like sparking Apple juice or more like Spindrift?

  88. Usagi_Shinobi Avatar

Closest thing we have would be Martinelli’s sparkling cider, that the people who aren’t allowed to have alcohol drink during the thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, so they don’t feel left out. Served chilled, in champagne flutes.

  107. terra_technitis Avatar

I didn’t know mixing fruit juice and carbonated water had a name. Those of us at my house love micing Topo Chico with lemonade, apple juice, grape juice, and sometimes orange juice. It just seemed like a good idea.

  109. nochickflickmoments Avatar

I love Apfelschorle, but I lived in Germany for a while. They don’t have it here in America as far as I know.

The drink I really miss is Spezi.

  110. PlanMagnet38 Avatar

I like to mix juice with plain seltzer rather than buy fancy seltzers or drink a ton of high calorie juice. But this definitely is a “me” thing and not anything that anyone else I know does. And get weird looks when I do it. And apple is one of the few juices that I would never do this with.

  111. Nyx_Shadowspawn Avatar

It was normal in my family to make this instead of drinking sodas. But also, I’m of German descent so maybe my grandparents were remaking Apfelshorle and then just passed that down?

We would do grape juice and seltzer too, but usually apple juice and seltzer.

  112. hellisrealohiodotcom Avatar

My wife had German exchange students and so we have it all the time in the summer. Our 2 year old called Apple Juice Apfelschorle and nothing we do can stop her from doing it.

  113. Weightmonster Avatar

I think I saw this at Aldi as a special during German food week and for a few weeks after since it didn’t seem to sell well.

I think it doesn’t sell well since apple juice is primarily consumed by children and the elderly in the US. Children don’t typically like  fizzy things. Plus we have hundreds of other fizzy drink options.

  122. SnooCompliments6210 Avatar

Sadly, it’s unknown in the USA. Have to make your own out of apple juice & club soda.

  123. HotTopicMallRat Avatar

Okay so! It was super unknown and likely still is, however! There was recently an American TikToker living in Germany, who talks a lot about her experiences as a black woman in Germany, and she has been raving about this drink, so I got to try it and it was really good and I think a fair amount of other Americans who watch her on TikTok are try it as well

  124. mtrap74 Avatar

That sounds delicious. I wish we had that here.

  125. distracted_x Avatar

The answer is not popular at all and in fact largely unknown by probably anyone who was born and raised in the US. If it’s even available here at all.

  126. QuarterNote44 Avatar

Not. I drank it all the time when stationed in Germany though.

  127. kid_ampersand Avatar

  129. F26N55 Avatar

I only know of it because my mom is German. I don’t think the majority of Americans would know.

  130. Hamilton-Beckett Avatar

American here, I do a 50/50 dilution of apple juice and carbonated spring or mineral water a few times a week.

I had NO IDEA that it had a name and was in fact a popular beverage somewhere. It’s just something g I thought of one day years ago when I wanted something refreshing with flavor but drinking full on juice just seemed too sweet to me.

I also like to squeeze the juice of a lime into it.

If you ever think about it, try squeezing a lime into it the next time you have it. That citrus is delicious with the apple and bubbles.
