How to ask my gf (24F) to participate in groceries (im 26M)?

r/

Me and my gf are together for about a year and a half. We’re both students, so non of us has the upper hand financially. She lives with her parents and i live with roommates, so financially speaking her parents take care of living costs and groceries, while i need to do mine on my own, which is legit considering i moved out of my parents house, but when she spends 4 nights a week at my place the cost of groceris goes up.

We cook a lot at home, and im the sole provider. I buy groceries for both of us, as if i were alone the shopping would’ve been much smaller, so its not that i buy things for my house and therefore should be the one paying. Her mom told her its ok she use her credit card to buy me groceris from time to time, but i feel like she’s not doing it enough. She sometimes buy us some veggies and small stuff but put all the heavy stuff on me.
I feel its legit to ask her to participate more, since these expenses are for both of us not only me. What to do? Is it legit to ask her to help?

Just ask her if she’s able to help, pay for some of the food you eat together as you love cooking and eating with her most nights of the week but it’s more than your budget allows.

Are you expecting her to buy groceries you plan on eating when she’s not there, or just the meals you cook together? Because I can under her reluctant to buy food that she won’t eat when it her parents money. Maybe sit down and do a bit of meal planning and talk about splitting the cost.

Just ask her to contribute more. Cost of living is ridiculous these days, even more so for students. You don’t have the “bank of mum” to rely upon so if you are paying for most ingredients for meals ask her to assist. But “ask” don’t “demand” it could cause conflict.

Yes, you talk to your gf. That’s what people forget, communication is always the way to go.

So she eats dinner there four days out of seven?

Hold onto your grocery receipts for a week and see what kind of dough you’re spending on dinner ingredients. Show her what you’re spending.

Theoretically she should ante up for 4/7 of that total. But she what she’s willing to actually spend (maybe ask her to do the physical grocery shopping for one to two dinners a week).
