How to deal with people that are obsessed over their nationality?

r/

There is a person that I cannot avoid and have to interact with daily. Unfortunately, they will not stop trying to relate to their place of birth, even though they have little to do with it. It is so unbelievably cringy and annoying I can’t take it anymore. They know like 3 memes about it. How do I deal with this?

Just politely ignore all their comments related to the subject. If you interact with them often, and have been for a while, and feel it’s warranted, tell them directly once your feelings about the topic, then ignore.

Just tell them that country is a social construct
There is no such thing as borders and when you say you like a country you mean you like the landscape, weather and not the government.
Or you like the culture but country does not exist

i’d just grayrock them as much as possible. like yeah sure nod along but don’t engage, let them tire themselves out. some people really latch onto identity stuff to feel interesting or valid and it’s not your job to fix that.

If I wanted to be petty I’d learn more about their nationality than them and bug them in return.

You don’t know about this? But isn’t this your nationality? 😁

    What is their nationality?

I don’t quite understand. Are they immigrants? Are they feeling out of place and missing home? Are they finding the country they’re in less of a good place than they had always imagined? Are they trying to find something to say? Seem interesting? Wanting to seem interesting or important? Are they autistic? I live in a city of immigrants and migrants and have never had this happen. Some mental pressure is at work here that until it’s resolved, might show itself through repetitive talk about one subject.

Don’t engage, change the subject to something else.

You just learn more about their nationality and you make them scream “but you are not this nationality and you cannot speak about things you don’t know”.

For example, Brits and how they bombarded Greece after the end of WWII so that the communists wouldn’t take control of the country they freed (the right wing guys were working with the Nazis, the communists freed Greece).
Or for Americans how they experimented on black people and gave them diseases on purpose.
    Stuff like that.

I live in a place where there are so many people like this. Being obsessed with being born in a specific part of rock is insane. It’s pure loser behaviour. Just don’t engage.

I am so mixed that I have no big cultural traditions. As I child I envied the clannishness of some ethnic groups. I see where it becomes their whole identity and can be annoying.
