How to find legitimate conferences in your field, except from colleagues?

r/

I’m trying to boost my resume and go to more conferences, but I have a hard time finding them, except the very famous ones. Of course I tried googling but a lot of webpages are just predatory and fake.

Why not ask colleagues? The best and most effective way is simply to find out where the people you respect are presenting. You can also identify professional societies in your field and go to the conferences they host. Some professional organizations also have regional sub-organizations that host regional conferences that can be cheaper and more targeted.

Look at the CVs of colleagues in your field, see where they have presented.

Most respected conferences are going to be organized by, or at minimum loosely affiliated with, some professional organization. So it usually makes sense to look through their websites.

But honestly colleagues are probably you’re best bet. I don’t know about your field but for most of the ones I’m familiar with there’s really only 3 or 4, main big conferences most people find it worth to go to, and then a handful more smaller more niche ones. But after a couple years in grad school you’ll probably develop a good idea of the few relavent ones.

Generally if I see an ad/email for a conference that I 1) haven’t heard of before 2) no one I know has attended 3) doesn’t come directlly from a professional organization/institute I pretty safely dismiss it as not worth spending time looking into

In my field there is one specific webpage that lists them all out and everybody uses. Though I guess there’s no such webpage in your field, otherwise when you talked to your colleagues they would’ve mentioned it already.

One way I use to identify which conferences are more important is by looking at the names of the organizers. The good ones tend to be organized by people famous enough for me to recognize their names. Whether I recognize the names of invited speakers is also a good indicator.
