How to speak up, without causing work drama?

r/

Hi all!

Big THT fan and FKS so I figured I’d ask this question here instead of in the work forums!

I’m having an issue with work and I don’t know how to bring it up.

So for some background. I am a supervisor at a major company. So I have 9 other coworkers on the same level as me. We are all required to work 20 days a month, and must work one full weekend (F – Sun.)

The shifts and the days off are based off who’s been here longest, and I’m at number 3.

So how it’s SUPPOSE to work is:

The manager asks us for our preferred shift for the month and the 10 days off we want. Then she tries to honor it, based off the seniority. Our schedule is suppose to be handed back to us on the 15th of the month so we can swap amongst ourselves (if needed) before the first of the month.

Well lately, I’ve noticed my manager hasn’t been keeping up her end of the bargain. She just gives us a schedule that’s half done and tells us to “work it out.” Which means a) it never actually goes by seniority and I’m the one who gets screwed and b) the schedule usually doesn’t get published until the 1st of the month so you can’t plan your life bc you have literally no idea what days you are working.

This has been happening since February and in the winter it wasn’t that big of a deal cause it wasn’t a busy person, but I get very busy in the summer as I take a summer job by the beach just to get out of the house. So now it’s messing with my summer plans because I can’t even tell Second employer my days off for May yet because we don’t have May schedule and I’m sure the same is going to happen for June through August.

So I guess my question is, how can I approach this with the manager? I could always go above her to the regional manager, but that would just mean that the regional manager would take over the schedule which would be worse for us because she’s always said “let’s make it easy for the company” which would be that everyone is required to work the same days every month; which we all disagree with because we ALL like the flexibility of sometimes having a Friday off and sometimes having a Wednesday off and sometimes having a whole week off, etc. that type of flexibility is something that only supervisors have which is honestly really handy when you need a random Wednesday off to go to a doctors office, but don’t want every Wednesday off. So going above my managers head would just screw me even worse.

But I’m also scared that if I don’t approach the right way, my manager will be offended with how I spoke to her and go to the regional manager anyway.. what should I do?
