How to write an amazing letter of recommendation for a faculty member’s tenure promotion file?

r/

I was a graduate research assistant for a professor in a different department and we completed an IRB approved study that turned into a couple of publications, a conference presentation, and a faculty workshop. I want to write an absolutely stellar letter that people will remember as the best they’ve seen. What kinds of things should this letter cover?

The most valuable thing is to include specific experiences or details in support of what you say. If you’re able to see the criteria the institution uses to make it’s tenure determination, that can give guidance too.

Avoid bland praise, and don’t be gushy. Be honest. Be as specific as possible.

Nice idea. However, (with 13 years on two university promotion committee) at most universities a graduate research assistant letter will have little impact.

Read the tenure guidelines and speak specifically about examples related to that. Your gush, while mebbe appreciated as a grad, wont be as helpful as that
