I (17F) am working my first job, and I hate it

r/

I just started working at a small ice cream shop. It pays minimum wage, and I didn’t know that until the interview.
They hired me on the spot, so I didn’t really have time to think it through. Minimum wage feels so dehumanizing.
At the same time though, I feel genuinely incompetent at this job. I don’t know how to “look busy” and apparently other people hired at the same time are catching on quicker and better.
I feel stressed all the time, like I’m doing everything wrong. I’ve worked three full shifts, and I’m still not feeling better about things.
I think the mix of the pay, new environment, and my horrible anxiety is making this worse. I struggle to sleep at night because I’m overthinking it so hard.
I’ve been told to stick it out by some people. That it’ll get better and easier, but my boss said others weren’t struggling as bad, and I seem too reserved. I’m really trying to talk to people, and do things.
I hadn’t thought my second shift was bad, I actually felt good about it, until my boss told me at the start of my third shift that I was behind.
I’m struggling to do everything here, but I’m trying.
Other people have told me to quit and find another job that pays better, probably retail. I don’t know what to do.

Quitting might sound dramatic but staying in a job that drains your spirit for pennies is the real tragedy. You’re not falling behind because you’re weak, you’re waking up to the fact that your time and mental health are worth more than minimum wage and mistreatment.

If you got anxiety, a job like that isn’t going to do you any good imo. Better off working at Target or Walmart, stocking stuff and being isolated. As for being paid minimum wage, since you’re a teen, that’s gonna be pretty normal for most jobs unless you know someone somewhere.

If it’s wrecking your mental health and barely pays, you’re allowed to walk away. First jobs suck but they shouldn’t make you lose sleep.

Look just to be honest with you I’m 32 years old. I’ve been working with Walmart for almost 10 years now Walmart is actually my first real paying job. My other job was working with my aunt and uncle in the paint business. I did that for two or three months and I finally quit because I couldn’t take it anymore getting up at 3or4 in the morning to get ready plus if you quit your job, how are you gonna get any skills from what you’re working on I would switch my job and work at this job. I don’t like my job. It’s boring. It’s frustrating. It’s cold and customers are always rude to me and I’m trying to be nice to them

It is easier said than done, but you just need to relax. No reason to overthink things, it doesn’t help you and only hurts you.

Take tasks as they come, when you are off of work do other things to take your mind off of it. All jobs have their downsides and stressors, you need to learn to not let it spill over into your personal life.

It is your first job so eventually you will figure out what you need to do. I have been working for 20 years now and sometimes I still get caught stressing about work outside of work, it gets better over time.

I would keep your current job while you look for a better paying one, the economy is tough right now and jobs are hard to find

Well, it’s your first job so there is no way guy will catch on as quickly. Use the opportunity to make mistakes and pick up on the skills guy need to be good at food related jobs like this. Use this job for experience..you don’t need to be perfect at it, just use the job to your own advantage. When yuu have things a bit more figured out, go find a better job, better paying and you will pick up on details a lot faster

Well, the good news is that now that you’ve had your first job, getting the next one will be much easier because you have work experience. Good luck out there.
