I change people’s ceiling fans without them knowing

r/

I live in the south. It’s hot af most of the time. I can not stand going in places where they have ceiling fans going, but set to turn backwards. So I’ve taken it upon myself to change the spin direction to push cold air whenever possible. Friend’s house? Yep. Family? Yep. Public places? Yep.

I don’t feel guilty at all. One day I will have succeeded at making all fans turn in the correct direction. Maybe then we can unlock the secrets of the universe.

You spent all summer doing that and now it’s Fall. Time to start switching them back.

  2. Certainful Avatar

But by the time you change them all it’ll be winter and you’ll have to go switch them all back.

  3. Sea_Joke_8158 Avatar

that’s lowkey heroic 😂 you’re out here fighting the good fight one ceiling fan at a time

  4. tannerbananer06 Avatar

I always forget, which way should it go when it’s hot and which way when it’s cold?

  17. tater56x Avatar

Is it different in the southern hemisphere or does that just apply to toilets?

  18. WeAreDreamin11 Avatar

Oh it’s really that simple? I surely hope so. You’re a hero. I won’t be able to update until next weekend when I see her next, but I will certainly be back to update.

If I look up at my ceiling fan, which direction should it spin?

  22. sunbleahced Avatar

Sometimes people post stuff like this and I think they have control issues or they’re trolls.

I think you…. Might be smarter than most people. I live in the north and I change my fans in the spring and autumn.

You’re doing them a service, cuz if you’re changing it to the actual correct direction for hot weather, they’ll be saving energy.

  23. AstronomerCapital344 Avatar

Do you ever stand on any small children to reach the fans?

I do that with people’s toilet paper rolls. Paper goes front, down—don’t give me that “rear dispensing” technique!

What about ceiling fans with left and right switch’s? All i ever hear is people talking about up and down.

  40. Ktulu204 Avatar

If you came to my house and switched one of my ceiling fans I would immediately notice. I think I have OCD. And I know I have excellent peripheral vision. I notice things without even looking at them. A fan spinning in the opposite direction than the last time I saw it would click instantly. I’m also obsessed with symmetry!

I lose my FUCKING mind at work lol. I work in property management in Florida, and I will get weekly calls about a house being hot. Just to get there, and they hit the reverse button on all the fans.

  49. She-HulksBoyToy Avatar

That all sounds great except for the

    >without them knowing

part. Like, are people just leaving you alone in their house for extended periods of time?

  50. TheMightyFaroohk Avatar

I dont understand what the difference is.

  51. CrazyFoxLady37 Avatar

I clicked this because I legit thought that from the title you uninstalled their ceiling fan, then reinstalled a new one. I can’t decide if I’m glad I was wrong or not. But I learned something new today, I had no idea changing directions on a ceiling fan was a thing!

  52. Fit-Plastic-8839 Avatar
  53. oek653 Avatar

i didn’t even know you could do that to a ceiling fan until a couple years ago when my room had one

  57. Vurrag Avatar

There is a reason for the switch. What a piece of work.

  58. Hot-Surprise-8957 Avatar

For my mental health, I really needed to know there was a ceiling-fan-switcher bandit out on the loose with no remorse terrorizing the south. May you find your way to my house because I didn’t know there was a specific fan direction protocol!

  59. caleeksu Avatar

Me looking to see if you’re also a member of r/tall 😆

    (I love this, btw.)

  60. nonameusernam6 Avatar

Is it same direction for all fans? Cuz I just moved and have no idea. If it’s up for cold or down?

  61. Kianna9 Avatar

Want to come to by my house? I never know what direction it’s supposed to go.

  62. ceilingfansuperpower Avatar

Dude you’re my hero, absolutely no lie

  63. PungentFriend Avatar

The gym I go to in Florida is one big room with probably 10 ceiling fans, one half of the room going clockwise, the other half going counterclockwise. Does that work to keep it cool?

  64. juan_putaso Avatar

I work in office furniture and I’ve set 100’s of clocks on microwaves without any fanfare. I get you

  65. Imaginary-Object-137 Avatar

I need to put pillow case on my fan blades to clean, sometime. Maybe when football season is over😜

  66. BenAdaephonDelat Avatar

Honestly I’ve never changed my fans direction. They’re just always set to blow down. I let the thermostat control temperature. Fans are just off during the winter anyway.

  67. Much-Point7740 Avatar

NGL you’re doing God’s work. The backwards fan thing drives me absolutely insane too.

  68. Relative_Broccoli922 Avatar

I’m gonna be honest, I have never seen a fan set to blow air towards the ceiling ever in my life unless I switch it to do so. They come set to blow from the factory, why are all of your friends and family switching them?

  69. LocationWonderful892 Avatar

How do I lure you into my home to do this? It’s hard to reach.

  70. Dizzy_Chipmunk_3530 Avatar

  71. Grand-Flight-8445 Avatar

The hero we need. The hero we deserve!

  72. sidewalkoyster Avatar

Mine went clockwise but I felt cool air push down

  73. GauntletVSLC Avatar

I’ll be real, I’ve installed hundreds of fans over the years. I’m still not sure which way they’re meant to be spinning for which season.

  74. Tongue4aBidet Avatar

It moves air either way, just down against the walls or down under the fan. It’s not like turning a heater off. Depending on the layout you might be making it worse.

  75. tree_or_up Avatar

But it helps dissipate the heat when the fan draws air up! (For the record I am just kidding but I have definitely heard this).

See also “if you eat hot soup on a hot day, you’ll get cooler because you’ll sweat more!” Sure, why don’t we turn on the oven too?

No, you people just love the freaking muggy heat and are probably the first to complain when the temperature inches down toward 75F. Stop gaslighting the rest of us

  76. Longjumping-Spare870 Avatar

    You are my kinda human

  77. krystalgayl Avatar

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? Are all celling fans shape shifters?

  78. Redbeard821 Avatar

I always want to feel the air from the fan, even during the winter. Would rather feel that over circulating air around the room.

  79. newbie527 Avatar

Mine always blow down. In winter I slow them down as we don’t need the cooling breeze.

  80. tntne3 Avatar

I did that for my neighbors a couple months before they moved, they’d been living there for years. Felt bad

  81. Rude-Expression8919 Avatar

Doing God’s work tbh. Nothing worse than a backwards fan making everything hotter.

  82. Just_a_dude92 Avatar

My older aunts would set them backwards on purpose because they didn’t like direct wind and “that way it distributes the wind to the whole room”

  83. roosterjack77 Avatar

Because of your comment I am going to start switching everyones fans backwards

  84. Mean_Purchase_7594 Avatar

Not all heroes wear capes. You’re doing God’s work out here fixing everyone’s basic life skills.

  85. ForwardFuture6066 Avatar

How do you DO IT THOUGH

  86. ChillWisdom Avatar

For those who don’t know, You want the fan on low and the blades blowing the air up towards the ceiling in the winter so you don’t feel a breeze and get a chill. You do this to circulate the warm air around the room that gathers at the ceiling.

The switch on the fan is supposed to be changed as the seasons change so that it goes the other direction in the summer and blows a cool breeze downwards onto the inhabitants of the room when it’s hot.

  87. More_Mind6869 Avatar

I just spin my room the opposite direction around the fan..

I don’t have to change the blades that way.

  88. lower_haighter Avatar

I recently did the same for my parents and sister as well. Keep up the good work!

  89. sawman_screwgun Avatar

I do the same thing to people’s refrigerator doors that open in the wrong direction. Flip em around while they are distracted. Their lives are better for it.

  90. dearSalroka Avatar

I think most people don’t realise fans have two settings. Whatever setting it’s on when installed/moving in, it just stays on…

  91. bakes121982 Avatar

Haven’t studies shown this doesn’t actually make a difference?

  92. suzukzmiter Avatar

    The south of what?

  93. miner2361 Avatar

I don’t subscribe to that silliness. The ceiling fan will turn over the air in a room in about 15 seconds running either direction, and it feels cooler when it is blowing down on you due to evaporation.

  94. Background-Pepper-68 Avatar

I did this once at a restaurant and it ended up flinging dust all over the dining room for several minutes. Oops
