I deleted all my social media accounts for 6 months and it totally changed how I think. Ask me anything.

r/

A while ago, I decided to delete all my social media—no Instagram, no TikTok, no Facebook, not even Reddit.
What was supposed to be a short break ended up being 6 months.
Honestly, it changed my mind a lot.
I started focusing more, reading books, and spending my time on things that actually matter.
I didn’t even realize how addicted I was until I stopped.
If you’re thinking about taking a break or just curious about how it felt the good, the bad, and the boring ask me anything.

Did not being on social media change how connected you felt to your friends? If so, in what way?

  11. hey_nude Avatar

What was the impact on your relationships, friendships, family etc? (Group text threads that send a link to a social media vid you no longer open, friendships that stay active in DM’s, etc.)

I feel like everyone should do this. My phone broke 2 weeks ago I didn’t even get a new one til now n it was actually nice not checking my social every 5 minutes.

  13. yuedar Avatar

did you find you lost touch with friends by doing this? or did you or they begin to reach out more because of your detox?

  14. OldManRiversIIc Avatar

Well all the accounts except for Redit but still good for you I deleted all my accounts back in 2011

  15. CoraTheExplora13 Avatar

I did the same exact thing and now I ONLY have a reddit. It was eye opening. Everyone is CONSTANTLY on their phones being brainwashed by social media sites that push propaganda on them and I didn’t even realize just how bad it was until I stopped using them myself. It’s like…… I can live my life again. I no longer give a crap what other people think about what I’m doing or who I am. It’s SO MUCH BETTER being off social media.

I didn’t delete my accounts, but I have an app blocker installed on my phone. The limit is 24 hr blocks but once it gives you the notification that the block has ended, you can just restart it. It’s been EXTREMELY helpful for me. My longest streak has been 3 weeks, I still go on instagram every other day or so but I only scroll for 15 min or so and then restart the app blocker. I realized I’m like an alcoholic and if I let myself scroll, I’ll end up just looking at BS for two hours straight. Also ever since the administration change and something crazy happening every day, I get really anxious and depressed. Another reason to avoid social media for me.

Earlier I turned off tiktok. Will turn off others too. Was wasting time and ignoring other things. Time will tell how this works out.

  19. bonesybeats Avatar

I did this a year ago and I’m only back on Reddit. I try to avoid the news too. You stop giving a fuck about other people that you shouldn’t care about and start focusing on important things. If people are that important to you, you will text or call them. A huge eye opening moment. Do you think you will remove them again?

I live alone and don’t watch TV. My main source of news is social media, primarily Twitter. When I check the news on twitter, I often find myself scrolling through other content on the app, and I can end up staying there for an hour or two.

I’m not a news junkie, but I feel like I need to stay informed about what’s happening around the globe.

How would you approach such scenario?

  23. Money_killer Avatar

Been over 5 plus years for me the only thing I use is Reddit. Best thing ever I never plan on using them rubbish platforms again.

  24. Specialist-Field-935 Avatar

Pretty much the only reason i have social media is to keep up to date with things happening in my area, bands touring etc (as so much of this is announced on SM and websites barely exist). Do you feel like you were ‘missing’ things like that ? Or does this not really register for you anyway?

  25. Bhagwan9797 Avatar

Quitting smoking was easier than quitting Facebook and Instagram. The only social media that I use is Reddit, I had to get away from everything else. I was getting so much anxiety from it during covid times. It was a huge relief walking away from all that stuff.

  26. katmeow213 Avatar

Same, deleting facebook is life changing

  27. gaaren-gra-bagol Avatar

The only thing keeping me from this is that I live alone in a city where I don’t know anyone, my friends and family Are far away and I want to stay in touch. What do I do?

I did the same thing about a year ago Havnt gone back except Reddit I don’t consider it the same as fb or insta but I love it and won’t ever go back

  31. Heavy_Wolverine4001 Avatar

I would like to ask you how to express your desire to share some things in life? I usually use social media to share (sharing with others usually gets cold water, so I choose to throw it all on my social media).

Not trying to toot my horn here.. I’ve been off Facebook since 2015, Instagram since last year. I got a reddit a couple of years ago. It’s a much more manageable existence.

  37. pratpulsar Avatar

I just have reddit and YouTube. I cancelled everything, but I seem to spend the same amount of time on my phone. How would you do?

  38. scrobo22 Avatar

I find that the more I try to curate Facebook to show only what appeals to me (animal sanctuary posts, gaming, pro inclusive posts, no politics, etc) the more I see RELAVANT posts, but the opposite to what I want (posts slamming animals sanctuaries, posts about anti inclusive people, posts about how terrible the state of politics are, etc).

It’s like Facebook says “we see you like circles, cool. Look at how terrible these squares are!”.

That’s why I’ll do this too. But it doesn’t get rid of the “you’re just hiding from the truth!” folk around you unfortunately.

  43. Comfort_Not_Speed_50 Avatar

I don’t even like fb, but it’s the only way I have to stay in touch with some people, I’d miss them if I deleted it.

    How did you overcome that?

I did the same exact thing and now I ONLY have a reddit. It was eye opening. Everyone is CONSTANTLY on their phones being brainwashed by social media sites that push propaganda on them and I didn’t even realize just how bad it was until I stopped using them myself. It’s like…… I can live my life again. I no longer give a crap what other people think about what I’m doing or who I am. It’s SO MUCH BETTER being off social media. same here honestly it opened my eyes big time like i didn’t even notice how much it was messing with my head till i left it now i feel way more at peace and i don’t feel that pressure to prove anything to anyone it’s just nice to live without all the fake stuff and constant noise glad you’re feeling the same too Here
how did u have the discipline To be honest, it wasn’t easy at first. I had to remind myself why I wanted to do it every time I felt the urge to check social media. I also replaced that habit with other activities, like reading or going for a walk. Over time, it got easier because I started feeling the benefits and didn’t want to go back. Here
Why are you back I’m back because social media is still the easiest way to stay connected with friends and keep up with news and trends. But now I use it more intentionally and don’t let it control my time like before. Here
What were the main changes you experienced mentally? The biggest change was that my mind felt less cluttered. I wasn’t constantly distracted by notifications or comparing myself to others. I noticed I could focus better on work and hobbies, and my mood became more stable. Also, I felt less anxious and more present in the moment. Here
What was the impact on your relationships, friendships, family etc? (Group text threads that send a link to a social media vid you no longer open, friendships that stay active in DM’s, etc.) honestly at first it felt a bit weird like i was out of the loop sometimes especially with group chats sending insta or tiktok links but over time people kinda got used to it and just texted me directly or told me stuff in person i actually felt like my connections got better cause i was more present and actually talking instead of just reacting to stories or memes in dms Here
How old are you? 27 Here
Did you start any hobbies? Yeah, I did! Without social media eating up my time, I picked up reading more books and started journaling regularly. I also tried cooking new recipes just for fun. It felt good to do things just for myself without distractions. Here
What prompted you to stop in the first place? Honestly, I felt like social media was just taking up too much of my time and messing with my focus. I kept scrolling without really enjoying it and noticed it was making me anxious sometimes. So I wanted to see if I could live without it and maybe find better ways to spend my time. Turns out, it was a game changer. Here
Have you returned? If so how have you managed your return? And why did you return? I did come back after those 6 months but I’m way more careful now. I set limits for myself like only checking social media once or twice a day and avoiding mindless scrolling returned because some connections and info are hard to get without it but I don’t let it take over my time like before. Here
I didn’t delete my accounts, but I have an app blocker installed on my phone. That’s actually a really smart approach I totally get the alcoholic comparison same here once I’d open the app just for 5 minutes it’d suddenly be two hours later and I’d feel like crap and yeah the constant stream of bad news made things worse for me too have you noticed any positive changes in your mood or focus during those 3 week streaks Here
Did not being on social media change how connected you felt to your friends? If so, in what way? yeah it did a bit at first i felt kinda disconnected like i was missing updates or jokes everyone else saw but over time i realized i was actually having better convos with people like real talks not just reacting to pics or stories so i felt less connected to the noise but more connected to the actual people Here
What are your favorite books? I like different types of books. One book I really liked is Atomic Habits by James Clear because it helped me make better habits. Another one is Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, it talks about history in a cool way. I also enjoy The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho because it’s inspiring. Here
I live alone and don’t watch TV. Yeah I totally get that I used to feel the same way like I needed to stay updated constantly or I’d miss something important but I realized most of the time the news that really matters finds its way to you anyway through friends or even just headlines here and there lately I started checking news once or twice a day through a couple of neutral websites and then staying off social apps completely that way I feel informed but not overwhelmed maybe something like that could work for you too Here
Quitting smoking was easier than quitting Facebook and Instagram. The only social media that I use is Reddit, I had to get away from everything else. I was getting so much anxiety from it during covid times. It was a huge relief walking away from all that stuff. Wow I relate to that so much quitting social media felt like lifting a huge weight off my chest especially during covid when everything online felt intense and overwhelming Reddit feels different somehow maybe because it’s more topic focused and less about showing off your life glad to hear it was a relief for you too Here
I feel like everyone should do this. My phone broke 2 weeks ago I didn’t even get a new one til now n it was actually nice not checking my social every 5 minutes. That’s a great way to realize how hooked we are sometimes losing the constant urge to check your phone even for a short while feels like a breath of fresh air glad you got to experience that break before getting a new phone Here
did you find you lost touch with friends by doing this? or did you or they begin to reach out more because of your detox? not really i thought i would lose touch with people but the real ones stayed in contact we started texting more directly or calling sometimes actually felt more real than just replying to random stories so in a way it made some friendships stronger and showed me who actually cared to keep in touch Here
Earlier I turned off tiktok. Will turn off others too. Was wasting time and ignoring other things. Time will tell how this works out. That’s a great first step and honestly sometimes just turning one app off gives you a real taste of what you’re missing or gaining it’s definitely not easy but giving yourself that chance to focus on other things can make a big difference I hope it works out well for you Here
