To me, it’s parallel to minstrel shows. If you don’t know what a minstrel show is, that’s part of the problem.
IMO, drag shows are portraying stereotypes of women: caricatures of what it actually means to be a woman.

So don’t pay attention to it. The solution to your problem is that easy.
You didn’t mention drag kings, why?
I don’t get the recent obsession with them especially taking kids to them. Drag Shows were always pretty raunchy and I’ve seen them raunchy with kids around. Just not my cup of tea personally. I agree about the stereotypes too. My ex GF asked a coworker of mine whos gay to go to a drag show with her and he said, hell no. He hated the stereotypical caricatures of gay men presented. So I guess he sort of had the same beef you had.
I agree with this post and have upvoted it because of agreement bias.
Did you just dead ass compare drag to black face? WTF
You’re right, but it’s not an unpopular opinion in real life, only on the echo chamber of certain online social platforms
I dont think disliking drag shows and minstrels is an unpopular opinion
“I hate forms of art I don’t understand” -OP
It really isn’t that deep. It’s just adult dress up, and having fun. There is no big message. It’s just people enjoying self expression. I’m a cis woman and it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s not insulting at all to me. If anything, it’s more exhausting hearing men whine about things like “why is there no makeup for men” or “why do women’s razors have better blades”, because their masculinity is so fragile they can’t handle using a product that isn’t directly marketed to them as a macho thing to do. Seeing men who not only don’t weirdly stigmatize women’s colorful self expression, but joyfully partake in it against the insufferable negativity towards anything feminine, makes me feel warm and happy for them.
Then you just don’t go to them. Problem solved. There’s so much more to it than that. The drag community doesn’t need to be for everyone.
>IMO, drag shows are portraying stereotypes of women: caricatures of what it actually means to be a woman.
Lol right… because you assume women should be dressed in over the top makeup, dresses, and be putting on a show all the time?
That’s a weird thing to stereotype about women, friend.
As long as it’s adults only, then let adults be adults. If it’s open to kids though, then big no.
Drag is not meant to be depiction of “what it means to be a woman”. It is a world in and to itself. It’s a performance and an expression. It’s not for everyone and that’s fine, but the title of your post indicating that you actively “despise” drag queens, not just the shows but the actual people, is far more problematic.
Drag Queens embrace their feminine side through exaggerated performance. It’s not mocking women, that’s just reaching for a reason to be offended.
You absolutely cannot compare the two this is INSANE
I don’t find it entertaining or interesting. But I don’t like abstract art or rap music. I am not against any of those, it’s not harmful, it’s just a form of art that does not appeal to me.
Gah… While I respect your view on drag, comparing it to minstrels seems harsh. Drag’s evolved, some queens actively fight stereotypes and promote self-love and acceptance of all genders. RuPaul speaks out against objectifying women in her shows, pushing for individuality instead
You’re gonna be real upset when you learn about pantomime.
I agree with this.
Have you even been to a minstrel show?
Exactly. It’s extremely offensive. If someone decided to roleplay as a black person, using all harmful stereotypes assigned to black people, the outrage would be huge, and rightfully so. But it’s so normalized to mock women that people don’t even notice that.
It’s ok to have bad taste and be no fun.
Black face and drag are not the same thing. wtf
I love how triggered the degenerates get.
I hate the shows too, but only because I find all forms of lip-synching cringe. I actually like dressing in women’s clothes myself.
I don’t like to play dress-up to that extent, but plenty of other women do. 🤷♀️
As they say on AO3, don’t like, don’t read.
It’s more like how professional wrestlers do caricatures of masculinity.
YTA. Oops wrong sub.
Facts you’re actually cooking with this one lowkey.
You have a fundamental misunderstanding of drag. Educate yourself before making harmful comparisons like that.
Definitely unpopular opinion.
