I don’t get why people go to clubs

r/

Last year, a very good friend of mine who loves clubbing invited me to come with him. I had never been to a club up until then, so I thought “it can’t hurt to do it once”

Fast forward, we’re in a small underground club, music is blasting away and I’m standing there dumbfounded. People around me moving around in random ways in shady lighting. I asked my friend: “What do we do now?”

He: “We dance”

Me: “For how long?”

He: “three or four hours”

Excuse me but wtf? So all you do is get drunk while listening to super loud music and “dancing” for hours on end? I thought well maybe if you can find new friends or a date this way… so I asked:
“How do you approach anyone?”
“You just kind of go with the flow for a while and if you get eyecontact with someone, you go over and dance together”

Maybe I’m too much of an academic for this, but I felt like a huge dork. So this is all we do, all night long? And you guys do this every Friday night? What is the appeal? I was incredibly bored after like 10 minutes. I didn’t feel like getting drunk either, because even a measly beer was way too expensive. I walked out after half an hour.

Well actually you stay there for 10 minutes and then hook up with some random person

Your friend is doing it wrong then. Go drink. Dance if you like. Talk to people.

Those people are empty inside or live deeply unfulfilling lives. I used to envy people who clubbed all the time until I actually got to know those people. You’re better off without.

Some people enjoy being surrounded by people and participating in psuedosexual rituals that often lead to sexual encounters. Not me though. Not you either. It’s just not for everyone.

You’ll understand when you find music that you enjoy dancing to. I went to a concert as a kid and hated it. I didn’t understand why people would go to a show that was like that. Then, I went to an edm show and loved it. Just find what gets you moving. Trust me.

You dont need to meet new people or get drunk. The fun part is dancing to good music with your friends and being in a room where everyones dancing. But you need to go to a club with good djs and a good vibe.

Club scene is so dependent on location, and I’m not a fan of it in general. In LA you pay 200-300$ as a group and get a bottle (if your dude to girl ratio is favorable). Anywhere else it’s like a bottle minimum and straight ass in my experience. I’d rather kick back at a house party or go to a dive 99 times out of 100. I don’t think we’re alone in this either.

According to friends who like it the trick is tons of alcohol and other drugs.

Too academic to dance lmao ok

Aren’t the people dancing for 4 straight hours usually the ones with Molly?

for some people music is therapeutic, without alcohol too.

You can be “an academic” and also like to have fun. I don’t see how those two things are mutually exclusive.

I go to dance. I like that I don’t have to rely on talking/conversation to be social and be in the moment with another person. But if I didn’t like dancing I don’t think I would ever go to clubs.

As a man, I only went to meet women.

Which meant that when I was dating someone I hated going, because now I had to make sure some drunk guy wasnt going to harass my girl.

I am totally with you. I can’t stand forcing myself to stand in between a bunch of sweaty and loud intoxicated people at the club, I get too claustrophobic.

I don’t mind going to bars where I can sit and have a few drinks but clubs and concerts where there is loud music blasting around is not for me.

I honestly can’t go clubbing without coke. It’s miserable without

    Drugs help, until they hurt…

Club culture is its own whole unique thing that some people just don’t enjoy. It’s an amalgam of fashion, music, atmosphere, and socializing. If those things aren’t fun for you I’m afraid you’re never going to “get it”. Also: one visit is never going to be representative. Once you get to know a few people – maybe some of the staff – and meet with regulars on the dance floor – then you start to become a part of it yourself. Better sound, better drinks, and interesting people all around you. You’ll never get that experience hanging out at home or visiting your friends at a restaurant.

Personally, I love it! I don’t go regularly or even often, but when I do… woooo girl!!!
Drinking and dancing to super loud music, no convo is needed. It’s such a great way to unwind and de-stress 🥂💃

You’re too much of an academic to understand why people might like checks notes dancing.

(People enjoy it as a form of free movement and expression and connection with others usually those they come with, the atmosphere is there to when done right, promote the dancing with shady lighting and plenty of people meaning feeling less visible/seen and thus more free to dance without the hang ups you may have in other environments)
