I don’t like turn based games

r/

I’ve tried numerous turn based games from: Several Final Fantasies, Baldur’s Gate 3, Divinity Original Sin 2, and more and idk why but they bore tf outta me. It takes me out of the immersion and im left waiting for my next turn which feels like an eternity. If people enjoy these kind of games Im happy for you! but for me I just cannot bring myself to like them

That is perfectly okay, dear friend. I think everyone has genres they don’t care for.

    ^(Big turn-based JRPG fan here.)

For how much love BG3 gets, I feel like I downloaded the wrong game.

The turn based part is one thing – I mean the combat is frustrating, long, and doesn’t feel that rewarding. Then it’s the other stuff – I dunno it all feels very last Gen. the graphics, even the characters. I’m not really into any of them except maybe Karlach. The story doesn’t hook me either. I got to act 2, and it’s just not compelling.

It’s wild to me people say it’s the best game they’ve ever played.

The only ones I liked are the south park games because you still have to make the attacks yourself and can fuck it up. So it’s not just left to chance.

I’m not really sure that a genre preference is a hot take or unpopular opinion.

That’s your 10 year old Tik tok brain. When you get older sometimes you just want to relax and do turn based games. Last thing I want to do after work is hyper focus some crazy game.

I don’t like them either but xcom and baldurs gate are an exception for me

Lots of people don’t like turn-based RPGs. Baldur’s Gate 3 broke the mould for that reason and others. This is far from an unpopular opinion. This is coming from someone who vastly prefers turn-based RPGs.

The only turn base game worth playing is the original Pokemon on Gameboy/GB Color.

Honestly, BG3 was ruined for me by an ex-friend of mine. I played Divinity II with him and every time we got through the prologue he wanted to restart as a different class, and eventually he started downloading these broken classes off of the Workshop. I swear we did the starter location 20-30 times before I got sick of it and stopped playing with him.

Fast forward to BG3, I told him I’d play but he had to pick a character and stick with it. To his credit, he did. However, because my financials at the time didn’t allow me to actually pick it up until a month later, by the time I got it he knew where everything was like the back of his hand, to the point where he’d go and loot everything except here, oh you need to walk into this room, hehehe, no nothing is going to happen it’s just a fun room to go into, PSYCH STORY CONTENT.

You never enjoyed a Pokémon game?

Yeah there are plenty of genres to me that aren’t fun. I agree, ODS2 and BG3 didn’t do it for me but for almost all my friends quite enjoyed them.

I prefer my Turn Based Games to be TBS/4x type games.

I was thinking board games and got a little confused.

But absolutely agreed – if it’s a video game and I have to wait, I’ll find something else to play. my patience is thin from waiting…and waiting…and waiting….for my 9 year old to take their turn 🤦

Try Clair Obscur Expedition 33. I too get bored of the slow turn based games but I have been having a good time with Clair Obscur. The combat is a mix of a lot of different games and relies more on timing and dodge/parrying than just picking a move and watching it go. It’s kinda like Xenoblade or Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. The story is very unique and good too, it’s like a good weird anime show that has horror elements to it, lol. Just try it, it’s like a turn based RPG for people who aren’t too hot on turn based games

I have spent many thousands of hours playing RPGs because Action RPGs were a rare thing in the past. I have always been a fan of fantasy books and started with Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms which went hand in hand with D&D so when I loaded up BG3 I said this is the game I have been waiting my whole life for. Then I got a couple battles in and just stopped. For one I don’t have the time for that level of obsession and secondly I realized I am just tired of turn based combat. I’ll play it and that Expedition some time but as long as I have an option for action that’s what I will play

Maybe try Persona? I usually don’t like turn based games but those work for me for some reason. Especially P5. It’s so fast paced.

That’s fair. They might not be for you

Civilization series for the win. I respect your opinion though

I don’t think this is unpopular, plenty of people don’t like turn based games.

Yeah I mean that’s valid my self I will only play open world games where I can explore… think fallout, elder scrolls, the Witcher 3, ac valhalla, ghost of Tsushima… I can’t stand rat run games where you must go through the level as mapped and have to progress on a fairly tight schedule. And if there’s a single thing with a low effort timer masquerading as difficulty I’m out… ac valhalla did it once and I’m still salty about it.
