As title suggests, I just did my tire change and have driven < 1000km in 6 months.
… at least 250km of that is to the airport and back for a few work trips.
My insurance is just below $200 a month. I barely add gas.
Car is a 2010 Elantra, 240km. Timing belt due, original clutch, some repairs pending, but otherwise super reliable.
Should I just start ubering? Any thoughts on ditching car ownership for uber

It has been probably the most reliable car I’ve ever had, pending repairs and upcoming upkeep aside.
Challenged with upkeep pending is gonna be ~4K give or take
Id keep it if i already have it
You won’t need it until it’s gone.
Id keep it. Not having a vehicle would feel like a major loss of freedom to me.
I got rid of my car ten years ago. Rarely drove it, but paid a combined $300/month to insure and park it. I have barely missed it. Fortunately, I WFH, and my office is two miles away when I have to go in. We have light rail to the airport (Seattle), and I can take the train to Oregon. In an emergency, I can have friends drive me places, but that hardly ever happens. I use Uber 1-2 times a month.
Yeah. Fortunately I get a free transit pass from work (we can have that or a parking pass), so I can take buses and light rail for free.
I don’t think you are going to get much for selling the car. wait til it costs too much to repair and see what you spend on uber then. airport taxis get expensive
Driving was probably cheaper than ubers because you’d have to pay the maintenance costs for the uber cars, too. They increase the price.
Keep the car and use public transit for work.
Uber is very expensive when used frequently and for long distance. Your car is paid off, you just have to pay the running costs and that alone is cheaper than paying Uber every time you need transportation.
I work from home every day of the week and own a paid off car. $200 of gas per month, $80$ insurance and $1000-$2000 per year of maintenance. I’ll never sell it for Uber and public transit
Is that full comprehensive insurance?
My insurance company wanted $1200/year for full co.prehenaove. I went with a different policy called Third Party Property which only covers what I crash into but my car itself is not insured. That cut it down to $340/year.
How long was each trip?
I’m driving about 100 miles a month. But that is driving 3 miles to office 3 times a week and grocery shopping 3-4 times a month.
That’s 15 trips a month. Each Uber is about 20. It would be 300/month in Ubers. I own the car outright and pay 75/month in insurance.
Kinda depends where you are OP.
You’re using metric so not in the US … and your syntax doesn’t seem European so guessing Canada?
If you’re urban then maybe not a bad idea – insurance, gas, parking … can all add up.
If you’re rural then I’d keep it – better to have your own wheels in case of emergency etc.
A reliable car with low mileage is an asset. I would consider keeping it if you still have any use for it whatsoever. I have a 2010 car with 50,000 miles in it and it’s runs like new.
Id sell the Elantra before it gets the engine tick and loses value. But def hang onto a vehicle if u have the luxury. Not sure if it exists where u live but we have a pleasure use insurance here that’s much cheaper for a vehicle that doesn’t get driven much.
