Last week, while cleaning out my childhood home to prepare it for sale, I found an old jewelry box tucked away behind a loose panel in my closet. Inside, there was a letter addressed to me in my mom’s handwriting. She passed away 10 years ago.
The letter wasn’t anything grand no secret confession or hidden treasure map. It was simple. She told me how proud she was of the person she knew I would become. She wrote about the little quirks she loved about me as a kid. She even made a few cheesy jokes, like she always did.
Reading it, I cried like I hadn’t cried in years. It felt like she had reached across time just to hug me when I needed it most.
Life has been overwhelming lately. I’ve felt so lost. But finding that letter… it was like she knew. Like she was still here, whispering, “You’ve got this.”
I don’t even care if nobody believes me I just needed to tell someone. Because today, I feel a little less alone.

I believe you. I’m glad you found the letter. I am absolutely certain your mom would be so proud of you.
That’s so beautiful. It’s amazing how love can find a way to reach us, even years later, right when we need it most.
ooh that’s beautiful, sometimes the people we love find ways to reach us even when they’re gone, i’m real happy you found that letter.
Love when the universe provides! Magic is everywhere.
Sorry you lost your mom 🩷
Not me thinking of ways to hide letters for my children now 😭
My mom died 9 years ago and I would have loved to have something like this from her. I’m happy for you!
Whenever I feel completely lost, I read letters my mom wrote to me, too. Sending you so many hugs!
What a treasure to find! I’m happy you got to feel your mom’s love all these years later. Time to frame the letter!
Look for other panels and notes before the sale!!
You’ll treasure it forever, of course. Soooooooooo glad you found it!
100% your mum is still cheering you on! Love is a vibration that transcends time and space. The love she was feeling for you when she wrote that note. Is still present in this very moment and every moment going forward.
Not me crying….
So happy for you!!!
This is amazing. I am so glad you found it! A letter like that has all of the magic in the world and would mean so much.
And you know she would be proud today of who you are. She raised a strong and wonderful person. Keep her love in your heart and remember the good things – those good memories will keep her with you forever.
I lost my mom in December, and am going through the house as my dad prepares to sell to downsize and go into a senior appt. I haven’t found anything like this, but there is magic everywhere I find old pics, and keep sakes. I can feel her spirit with me – and I’m pretty certain your mom’s spirit is with you right now too.
I believe you OP. That’s a blessing man. Your mind would be so proud of you.
This is so beautiful and touching. I am so glad she was able to touch you with a note one last time. Simply beautiful.
A coworker lost his mom this week and it turns out all of us who have lost our mothers can still cry on command…
I believe! What a marvelous gift from beyond! Sending you virtual {{hugs}} as well dear! Hope your beloved, sweet Mother finds you in your dreams! Greatest of luck!
This made me cry. I’m so happy you found that. ❤️

As someone who lost their mother a few years ago suddenly, this made me cry instantly. “It felt like she reached across time just to hug me when I needed it the most” destroyed me. I’m so grateful that I came across this post, and I’m so happy that you found that letter. And you’re right, she did know, moms always do, and you do got this. She’s right there with you. Thank you for sharing this, I needed this today and I’m so very appreciative for you.
((HUGS)) The letter found you, when you needed to be reminded how special you are!
That’s a beautiful and very unique feeling. My mom passed when I was 6 so I didn’t get the chance to know her for too long. This was in 1992, and when my dad passed away last winter, while going through his things, I found a card my mom had written to a friend upon my birth, which never made it to that friend. She said some really sweet things about how happy she was to have a little boy, and also said some very endearing things about my dad in the same note. It’s the only thing of the sort I have, and I imagine you’ll cherish your find as much as I cherish mind.
Sorry for your loss, OP
I believe you. Having had such a lovely mom is a blessing and a big loss. You still can talk to her, she will hear you. And when possible the universe will give nuggets of responses. Her favorite song in the radio, her perfume on someone, or just a thought popping in your head.
This was a treasure chest! You are loved. Physics says energy can’t die, it just changes shapes. She is just on the other side. Not on the other side of the world. Way back there was no airmail, no email. In the future lovemail to the other side back and forth will be easier, more mainstream. Lots of people still talk to (pictures of) deceased loved ones. Don’t let anyone tell you you are crazy. You reconnect with love.
Wow, that made me cry. How sweet of your mom to do that for you. ❤️ Now I’m going to write something for my son, thank you for giving me the idea.
I just cried. That’s beautiful. So glad you found it
Oh, hon. hugs
Very bitter-sweet. I think this is awesome!
I wish I’d find a letter too written by my mom. She passed away because of cancer two years ago. i miss her.
Brother, I believe you, and I’m jealous of that hug. Keep on keeping on.
Idk about anyone else, but I believe in signs from those who have passed. She wanted you to find that letter last week. She knew you needed that little pick me up. She may be gone, but her spirit is still with you. Sending hugs!
I’m so glad you found that letter.
I had surgery several years ago and the night before I just had a bad feeling. I wrote my kid a letter- just on a legal pad- and put it in my nightstand. No bombshells, just telling her how much I love her and that she is my greatest joy.
Needless to say, I did not die in surgery and that letter is… who knows where.
I should write another one, or two (in case she doesn’t find just one!). I don’t have any words of wisdom, but I love her more than anything and always want her to know that.
I love that she thought to hide it for your future self. She must have loved you very much.
Because she is still with you. 🥰 Thank you so much for sharing this!
Ugh this hurts.. My mom is still around but we don’t talk.
This is so kind your mama knew exactly when to let you find it. May she rest in peace 🙏🏼❤️
This is beautiful and your Momma is absolutely with you! Adding another hug from me! 🩵
That’s beautiful, thank you for sharing♥️
That letter turned up at the exact moment you needed it. Your mom is still watching over you. She is still giving you gifts. I’m so glad you found that letter!
I love this.
This is beautiful. It’s beautiful she wrote that letter and even more beautiful because you guys seemed to have loved each other and had a wonderful relationship. Keep that letter always. Look back on it and rember how much your mother loved you and believed it you.
Thanks. Now I’m crying.
That letter sounds pretty grand to me!! I’m so happy you found that!
A couple years after my Nonno passed, my mom somehow found an envelope with my name on it, in his writing, and $20 inside. She put it in my Christmas stocking. I still have the envelope and $20, I can’t bring myself to spend it. I’m so happy you found this letter from your mom, I hope it brought you so much peace.
That’s so lovely 😭
I lost my mom a little over two weeks ago and I’m in the process of moving rooms so I can be closer to my dad with dementia. I found a note in her closet from 1991 in my handwriting, stating I would never EVER french kiss someone. She had me date and sign it lol.
I still listen to my moms voicemail birthday wish every birthday.
My mom died 14 years ago. I cried reading this, imagining how I would feel finding a letter like that from her. I’m so happy you found it, and you got this 🙂
Amazing. It’s like the universe knew what your mom did and said now is the time.
Your mom knew SOMETHING about you and felt it strong enough to write to you about it. Keep that close to your heart. Because mom’s know.
I found a letter my mom left for me after she passed away and it was not a pleasant surprise. I happy for you that yours was loving.
My mom has been cleaning her house and she found a keepsake from her best friend who was like my second aunt and she gave it to me this week because she knew I would appreciate it and I’ve been Gavin the feels since.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer last year. She knew the end was coming so she wrote letters to my brother and I before she passed. It was one of the hardest things to read… And also one of the best. Cherish this feeling and remember that she loved you and was proud of who you have become.
You’re not alone. Cheering you on. You got this.
How beautiful , I am so happy for you x My Mam died 3 years ago, I would be so unbelievably happy to find such a message from her, saviour that hug through time ❤️
Pete Buttegeig spoke the other day about the letter he had to write when he deployed. The military makes them do it. They share passwords, I Love You’s to their people, and secrets. He came out to his family in that letter because he didn’t want it to go unsaid if he died. He said everyone should do this practice and I think he is right. My husband died young and unexpected and my son will never have a letter from his dad. He will never hear his dad’s words spoken to his heart other than what he remembers before age 7.
I’ve felt lost without my mother, as well. I have a random voicemail that I listen to now and again.
this makes me cry 🥹 i hope you are okay

So sorry for your loss 🩷
What a powerful wonderful mama, she has all of us with lumps in our throats and tears in our eyes, feeling gratitude for having, or having had…a mother’s love. It truly does transcend all. 😭😭
That’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
You are so lucky to have had a wonderful Mom and you found a letter that brought it all back to you, that is amazing! Cherish the moment!

I believe you. She spoke to you when you needed it. I’m so happy for you!
I’m so glad you had that. It’s just wonderful!
This share has redeemed my entire Reddit scrolling tonight.
So beautiful, simple, and wholesome. Your mom touching you in a small moment when you could need it the most. Call it whatever you want. Some might being say a divine God moment of something showing up at this opportune time.
Either way, that’s a beautiful touching moment.
My mom died almost 30 years ago. She had a long drawn out illness and death. I believe you and hope to have the same luck(not sure if that’s the right word) as we clean out her and my dad’s home to sell (dad died:/). I hope this letter brought you joy and a reminder that there is someone who thought you were the most amazing and wonderful thing on this earth 💙
I so happy for you that you found that letter. As someone who lost their mom this week, I have been seeing all kinds of weird little coincidences that lets me know she is still around. I can tell you I agree that sometimes we see things when we need them the most. Here’s to more of those ❤
Yeah that’s a mom. They are the best.
Of all the things that didn’t happen, this didn’t happen the most.
What an incredible find, I’m so happy for you.
She’s never really gone until she’s forgotten. Keep her memory alive.
Virtual hugs!
That is very touching. I so wish for something like this from my mom. All I have left are pictures and a couple videos. I miss her so much. Thank you for sharing and I hope you are doing okay.

I believe in this wholeheartedly. I’ve absolutely felt this from loved ones passed and I’ve felt like I’ve been the vessel for someone else’s loved one to pass a message along. Take comfort from your sweet mama. She loves you and roots for you still.
That is her way of telling you she is okay, don’t worry and to let you know without a doubt all these years how proud she was of you. Never doubt her love or what she thought.
Let the pain go. It’s okay.
10 years and now what a sweet surprise to get.
You are blessed.
Many will believe because that is life and miracles happen every single day.
May your mom rest in peace now, and may you have the courage to be open about your feelings and the ability to find what she left you
No one will ever love you like your mother loves you.
The grand reserve
I’m so jealous…I’ve been on one and would love a sign to know it’s gonna be ok!!! This is seriously so cool 🥰
Wow, your mom must be incredibly talented — passing away both five years ago and ten years ago. Truly remarkable.
Or maybe these memories are just on different timelines?
You made me cry ❤️
Consider yourself blessed and privileged.
That love from your mom to you transcended life and death.
So happy you found it, and you can feel her love again.
I write letters to my children each birthday, only to give to them when they are old enough to appreciate. I write about what happened that year, milestones, how they are, what they like and little quirks. I hope they will enjoy reading it and that I am there to answer any questions. But in life, nothing is sure, and if I am not around, I hope they feel my love, just like you did!
Was it 👌?
My late wife decided to write a letter to my daughter for every birthday. She was only able to write 4-5 because my daughter was 5 going on 6 when she passed, but I was able to find them after a year of searching and give them to my daughter. It was such a bittersweet relief.
I believe you too! The letter was found when you needed it most. Hugs.
❤️
This is so beautiful. I lost my dear mother just over 3 years ago, and reading this post put a knot in my throat. I KNOW just how very meaningful finding that letter would be. Hugs to you and wishing you happiness.
and you got a voicemail based on your previous post that she passed 5 years ago?
Our loved ones are always here with us, even tho we can’t see them. You’re 100% correct, she did reach out and hug you bc she’s your mom and she knew you needed it. Wishing you calm in your storms, internet stranger.

Sometimes the love we think we’ve lost finds its way back when we need it most
I’m so happy to hear how your Mum’s letter gave you so much solace at a time where you needed it. My Mum has been dead for 24 years & I still miss her. Every once in awhile, I have vivid dreams where she is present & I always feel her love & care. The wrench comes at the end of the dream when I know I have to say goodbye to her.
This is AI generated.
Makes me happy for you
Yeah, no big deal just casually getting life advice from the afterlife like it’s totally normal
Yea, we believe u. Cheap shit. See OP’s post history.
I bought a notebook to write letters for my daughter in. So far it’s every year, but I might write more things throughout the year if something notable happens. Hopefully one day it’ll make her understand how much I love her and how incredible she is. Your post just confirmed it was a good idea!
Omg that is so beautiful thank you for sharing. Hope you’re feeling extra wrapped in love and that the warmth continues to hold you for some time 💗
I feel this.
My Mother left me a card, found after she passed, that explained how proud of me she was… She likely knew it would be the last time I would get that message from a parent because my old man is trash.
It is both painful and priceless beyond words.
I found a letter from my dad three years after he passed away. It was sealed with my name on it. I felt the same way ❤️ It was a short letter telling me he was proud of me and he hoped I was having fun. He must have written it when I was a kid in school but it reminded me what truly matters.
For whatever reason reading this has me bawling. Doggo wonders if I’m alright.
For Christmas 2019, my mom didn’t have a lot of money to purchase gifts for all 12 grandchildren. Instead, she wrote each grandchild a letter to be opened on their birthday in 2040. She passed away just 3 months later. I’m so grateful that we have that one last message to look forward to. She was such a positive person and loved each of these kids (adults now) so much. We have those letters tucked away for safekeeping and I hope I can be there when my 4 boys open theirs. It is such an amazing gift.
I’m happy you got that message from your mom right when you needed it.
A mother’s love is not soon forgotten. Im trying hard not to cry in this restaurant right now.
My goodness, that just hit me straight in the chest…I’m literally welling up as I type this.
That was a blessing from your mom and exactly what good parents do when they face their own mortality.
Whether you believe it or not, when you found that letter – even if just for a moment – somewhere in the cosmos, your mom smiled down at you with all the love in the world, proud of who you’ve become.
Thank you so much for sharing this ❤️ 💗 💕
My mom passed a little over 10 years ago now. I wish I could find a letter like this from here. Treasure this, it’s a gift, truly.
Bless you and your mother. Much love💛
Love that you found the letter. Cheers to you.
Maniniwala na sana ako until i check the profile.
Anyway, my mom passed when I was 3. I’m now 32.
Despite having no memory of her, i have a picture of her that is embedded in my mind.
I somehow love and envy these comments, having tangible stuff to remember your moms – it’s a blessing, a treasure na not everyone has.
What a wonderful blessing. Hugs from all of us who miss our moms.
What a great gift!!!
Ugh god can relate. I found a birthday gift (a home-made coupon for driving classes) from 17 years ago.
Hit me like a tonne of trucks.
I just lost my mother, who was my best friend, three weeks ago. I feel like I’ll never be happy again.
I’m settling her estate now and would give my right arm for that kind of letter. You are a very lucky person. All my best.
This is why I believe everything is meant to happen exactly when it happens. Like such fucked up things will happen to people, and that sucks, but this….. You could have had that letter for years, but now in this exactly time you NEEDED it most. ❤️
I hope you feel better, OP. She’s proud of you, even after all this time. Take some time to yourself, process everything, and know she’s always with you <3.
some things from your deceased parents happen to find you at the right time…. i saw a message on fb from my dad who passed away in 2014 i never saw it till that day… It definitely helped me when i needed it…
I’m coming up on three years since my mom passed and wow what I wouldn’t give for something like this. I hope you treasure this experience and never forget how she’s looking down on you proudly💙
I believe you. What a happy memory, thank you for sharing
Op that’s such an amazing treasure to find. I recommend keeping a picture and a scan in different locations. Some things are truly irreplaceable. I can’t begin to imagine finding something like that so long after my parents passing.
What an awesome find. I’m glad she did that.
💓
My heart for you xx ❤️
your mum is always by your side and today was that little reminder she’s proud of you and loved you very much xxx
I have all my moms old papers. I won’t find anything nice about me in there.
Your mom saved it for a rainy day. You were meant to see it, to remember her love and feel the joy of her pride. I’m so happy for you OP, wishing you the best in life🩵
stop bro you’ll make me cry
“You’ve got this!” ❤️❤️❤️
It came right when you needed it the most. Good moms always find the perfect thing to say. Sending love
I am a mom and this is so sad yet amazing to hear. Your mom is always with you no matter what ❤️❤️
You were truly loved. ❤️🥲
How wonderful. My Mom passed 13 years ago and I still have days where I miss her so much!
I believe you and you’re never alone. I hope her memory bring comfort and peace🫶
My mom died unexpectedly what I was a young teenager. She’s the type who would have left a letter, had she known. My dad didn’t die for another 20 years, he knew he was dying for five or six years at least. He used the time to squander what remained of The Inheritance he got from my mom and indulge himself. He left behind four kids and no letters.
I have two kids of my own now they’re only two and four and I’m only 36. You could bet your ass I have a couple boxes of letters for each of my kids already started. There’s no way that I’ll leave my kids in this world without doing everything in my power to make sure that they know what they meant to me.
I lost my mom a year ago and this was so wonderful to read. I’m so, so happy you found that letter. And I’m also really happy your mom wrote it. She knew you were/are awesome. You and your mom both sound like lovely people ❤️
OMG, that is so lovely, and I also believe you.
She knew that you’d find that letter at some some point, and I bet that you had butterflies when you recognised her handwriting. You have found it when you needed to the most (must be hard emptying the house as well – I’m so sorry)
I lost my mum nearly 6 years ago, and the pain is still there (I still have cards that she wrote to me (old birthday / christmas cards, I cant throw them away)), but how I’d of loved to have found something for me now (I won’t, but i know how I’d feel if i had of).
Sending you lots of love and a massive squidge.
You’ve got this!!! Oh, and I believe that they are always with us, watching and guiding. And she even said how proud of you she is – remember that, always xx
