Hi, I recently had a background check done for a job, and out of curiosity, I reviewed it. It states that I am classified as a level one sex offender. I’ve never had any trouble with the law in my life. The only incident I can think of is something that happened when I was 14 years old. At that time, I was in a long-distance relationship with someone my age, and we were exchanging inappropriate messages. My mom found out and informed my therapist and case worker, who then insisted that I go to a police station and make a report. I never thought anything would come of it until now. I’m really stressed about this because I’m in school to become an art teacher, and I don’t want this to ruin my future. I’m unsure how to address this situation, and if it is related to that incident, is there a way to have it removed from my record? How should I proceed?

I would think you would need a lawyer. I don’t know exactly how the registry works but I would think you would have been informed if you were on it. Have you tried looking yourself up?
Surely you can’t be classed as a sex offender without a conviction. Ask your mother if they ever charged or followed up the police report.
It could have been a mistake by the background investigator when they entered in your information and accidentally entered in the wrong information.
