In general the concept of controlling a room temperature is nice, BUT why does everyone always set the AC in way that it tries to reach the absolute zero of 0°K?!? I get it it’s hot, people want a nice survivable temperature ok. But why not regulate it to a nice temperature of like 22-24°C? Why does the solution for “uhh it’s kinda hot” has to be “let’s freeze to death, so much more comfortable”. I am currently in a train it is 6 in the morning the sun is shining and we have a comfortable 18°C outside. So WHY does the AC have to run in the train on full power to turn this comfortable temperature into like 12°C where I actually consider putting on a pullower(that I ofc don’t have, because it’s way to warm for that)… Also why would you wanna freeze your room to 15°C for sleeping? Every time I use an AC in the room while sleeping I wake up with a sour throat, except for when I can get a hold of the AC controll and regulate it to a comfortable 22°C. Also why fabricate the opposite problem of winter? In winter I hate shopping malls cause you come out of the cold with thick cloths into a warm place and sweat to death. In summer you come out of the heat just to go into a room that is freezing which is even worse cause in winter you can take your jacket off, but in summer you can’t just produce a pullover out of thin air. Also in cars, yeah it’s nice to have if the temperature gets way out of control and hits like 40°C, but anything below that I much rather ride with the windows down than using the AC, that blows out air so cold my starts to hurt where it hits? So why do people wanna freeze if the temperature goes slightly above 20 just makes absolutely no sense for me. If the weather blesses us with temperatures above 20°C enjoy it that we finally have some good warm weather. why do people have to ruin it by turning every climatized inside space into a fucking freezer? i D honestly rather have no air-conditioning and sweat a bit than freeze for no fucking reason.
Edit: changed trains, this one is even colder… Fml

To me it’s way more annoying in the winter, when indoor spaces are heated way too much and you start sweating the moment you get inside because you’re wearing winter clothes.
You’re skinny, aren’t you, OP?
sounds like a you issue. a bit of cold relief is wonderful in a hot summer. same for cold winters: warm relif is similarly wonderful.
also, room temperture is 21 degrees C, and many people tend to like it a bit colder, especially when trying to sleep.
If you want to talk a nice temperature then 69°F is a nice temperature. After all it is a nice number.
I always take a sweater when I go out in the summer, in case the restaurant or store is freezing.
If you feel that the AC on in the inside of a building during summer is so cold that you consider wearing heavier clothes or a jacket just to go inside, you’re a wuss.
Now for the serious reasoning. Most places, stores, restaurants, etc, expect to probably get foot traffic. People. And with people comes body heat. That hinders the effectiveness of the AC. No, no inside climate temperature is cranked down to near freezing, stop exaggerating.
Now, I can tell by the lack of your use of Freedom Units, that you are likely from Europe if I assume correctly. If true, it makes sense that you cant handle AC. You dont know what quality AC is like when you have to live through four to five months of 90°-100° Fahrenheit strait, and you are begging for a room thats set to a nice 72° on the AC. I’m telling you, its amazing.
I’m with ya op. But I often think people want way too much conditioned air. They’ll set a thermostat to heat at 72 and cool at 75( sorry US). Like we can be a little uncomfortable from time to time. Cool at 78 and heat at 70 is plenty.
AC is for people wearing suits going from air conditioned homes to cars to commercial buildings.
The rest of us who go outside will just have to suffer the 20C temperature difference
Agreed. Going from hot to cold is not good for you. I remember a few years ago at a job, this situation caused arguments to the point a plastic guard was put on the thermostat so Me and others wouldn’t touch it. Also, it caused an argument with my junkie alcoholic manager at the time. She had a hard time listening to what the co-owner gave me permission to do.
Seems like a rant. How many of your friends keep their homes literally below freezing?
My home is set to my personal comfort levels.
Usually 21.5 in the day if I’m home, which rarely gets complaints, and 16.5 – 19.5 at night, depending on company.
I run hot. LOVE (cold) winter, but know I’m in the minority. I keep everything from big comfy socks, slippers, hoodies, blankets and anything else that might make the cold more comfortable on-hand by request of a cold guest.
When I’m visiting those same guests, there’s not much they can do to make me feel comfortable. I dress light, and if it’s cool outside, I spend time there instead. If it’s not, I usually take my leave when I’m feeling I need a break from the heat.
We’re all built different, and your personal ideal temperatures will change over time.
Going between hot and cold like that takes it out of me. We have our AC set to 72F and use a fan to distribute the coolth. But as soon as it drops to 74F out, we’re opening up and turning on the while-house fan.
People like you ruin it for the rest of us. Turn that temp down low!
Ac all year
Because you can put on a sweatshirt if it’s too cold, but you can do exactly fuck all else if it’s too hot.
Because you’re not fully understanding how ACs work. If you set your thermostat to 70F, it doesn’t blow 70F air. It’s about 15-20 degrees below that depending on quality of machinery. So while you are perfectly comfortable once it hits 70F, it might be “too cold” when it’s actively running trying to lower the temperature blowing 55F. (70F is just a random number I am using as an example, not trying to say that you like that specific temp)
I used to be this way, I was like a lizard when I was younger, always cold unless it was 80F+, which was nice growing up in the south. But then I gained like 60lbs and I’m the complete opposite. I barely turned on the heat at all this past winter
You’d like this old CollegeHumor sketch (Women’s winter): https://youtu.be/d2NNm8MTboA
Lol, don’t blame society for having a weak body. Just put on more layers if you’re so cold or try putting on more muscle.
For some reason AC temperatures always feel colder than that it is, so 18C inside will feel colder than 18C outside. I do agree with you though, even when it’s hot people turn the AC down waaay to much.
Don’t go to Singapore.
For me personally, 18 – 21 is the sweet spot. 21 – 25 im uncomfortable, but im unlikely to say anything. 25+ im uncomfortable and I will complain about it.
This isnt something I just suddenly do when it hits summer, im like this year round. My car is set to 20 all the time.
It also wastes so much energy
Appreciation comment for the fact you used Kelvins as a unit of measurement. Hearty up vote for the rest of your post.
Based purely on that comma before ‘that’ in the title, are you German, OP?
My German wife also dislikes how cold people set their ACs.
Me putting on a jacket is much more favorable than me stripping to my underwear
Kelvin is the absolute measure of temperature, it isn’t measured in degrees. So it needs to be 0K not 0°K.
To me a nice inside temperature is like 14°C for everyday functioning, 8°C for sleeping (I usually open windows and aim a strong fan at my bed). I turn into a pile of sweat when walking around in 24°C heat. Although I do not have an AC so these are just my regular thermometer preferences.
I also don’t wear a jacket until negative temperatures outside and don’t wear winter gloves and hats until like -20°C. I can casually pick up most snow with bare hands. I grew up in a pretty cold area.
24C (75F) is what I keep my house at in the summer and is perfect.
Businesses, offices, (and maybe your train example) keep it colder, especially in the morning, because they often can’t keep up with the demand at peak hot time later in the day. Getting it bellow 75F while they can helps.
I’ve been on trains and buses where the AC is either not working, or it’s not cooling that well. It’s not comfortable. I’d gladly take the cold over heat. Yesterday in Toronto, it felt like 48 degrees Celsius.
75 degrees is not comfortable, that’s really warm
I hate, when people use commas incorrectly
Turn up the ac please. I don’t like stale rooms where the air isn’t moving.
I’ll take that over sweating at all.
Move to the UK, it sounds like you’ll love it here
I work in a shop with AC – we don’t even have it particularly cold but after a few days I feel like a have an actual allergic reaction to it
22-24 C… I’m sweating my scrote off at that point.
But I do admit I like winter better where I can more easily keep my home and office at 18 or so. But I hate public buildings that jack up the heat in the winter.
I feel like the AC is never quite right on trains. They’re always hot to me. Sometimes it varies by carriage or where you are within it.
I’m not sure where you live, but where I’m from (with an actual, intensely hot summer), setting your AC to 15C (approximately 59F) would be an impossible luxury. I’m not even sure I could get my house to stay 59F when its 100+F outside, which it regularly gets to. IDK, I feel like 18C is cool bordering on chilly weather still and don’t understand why anyone would even want the AC on.
22°C is acceptable. However 20°C is superior.
My dad sets his ac to 27c
That paragraph needs way more breaks, but I get the gist of what you’re asking.
For public spaces, it’s easier to maintain cool temps, than to try to get them down from hot. I’m in the SE US. If our AC goes out, you aren’t getting the house temp down till nighttime hits. It just can’t fight it down.
So there is that, combined with the fact that many bodies and constantly open doors will lead to a lot of heat inside the area.
It’s also typically easier for someone to warm up than cool down. If they set it cooler, then hot people are comfortable and people who tend to get a little chilly will usually have an extra shirt or warm up jacket anyway.
