I have had a Mirena in now for a year and on low dose BC (yeah perimenopause) but the last few months I’ve had cramps that I’ve only experienced when I had an abortion (reason for Mirena)…anyone else have this issue?

I woke up last night to the most insane cramps along with coldsweats…i was drenched, and super nauseous to the point i almost threw up in the litter box because i was curled over on the toilet, like i was convinced i was having miscarriage. But the kicker is I’m on 2 BC and haven’t had sex in months because i recently split from my narcissist porn addict partner and haven’t had a period since i got the Mirena in.

I requested an appointment with OBGYN but will probably have to wait for Monday to hear a response. I just want to see if anyone has had the same issues because this last year has been a nightmare for me at the doctors not listening to me and one point I was left bawling because all I needed was to have my labs done before a medication was messing with my stomach. I’m at a loss with the healthcare system and have been trying to do homework before going in so they will not be dismissing everything I say.

Have you ever had an ovarian cyst? The pain is blinding, but usually benign and temporary, and the Mirena can trigger them.

After about two years of my Mirena, I began to get cramps. They came cyclically, like period cramps. Then I started getting my period again, more and more each month. Eventually I went for an ultrasound and found my IUD was sitting way too low and was no longer effective.

You’re describing my symptoms when I first starting getting ovarian cysts. Please get an ultrasound.

I hope all goes well for you.

I also agree that this sounds like cysts. I had one a few years ago and it started with insane cramps and then it ruptured.

    Physician here:

This really needs to be worked up and you need abdominal imagining. You may be able to start with a pelvic ultrasound, but may eventually need a CT scan.

Ultimately, pelvic pain in someone your age can have a number of causes and it really can’t be pinned down without an exam and work-up. Ruptured ovarian cyst is one possibility, but there are a number of other things-both benign and serious. Non-gynecological causes—like appendicitis—also need to be considered.

If you’re still having severe abdominal pain or if it returns and worsens, it may be worthwhile to go to an emergency room for sooner evaluation if you can’t be seen by a physician this week. Also if you’re experiencing new fevers, chills, vomiting, new heavy bleeding, or feel light you’re going to pass out with standing.

Oh! Me too! Mirena for the last 19 years (replaced every 5-7 years). Started estradiol for perimenopause and immediately started getting a severe pain in my lower right quadrant that comes every 3-4 weeks. Best doctor can figure is ovarian cysts. I love women’s healthcare…

Kidney stones could also be a possibility, the pain can radiate to weird areas, especially in women
