I heard Yahoo is now considered “old” for email. what do people use now?

r/

I’m only 21, I’ve always used yahoo. I’m just curious what people my age or even older use instead. Outlook? Something else? I would like to know just out of curiosity/ or if I should switch for safety/security.

I’m 35 and have used Gmail since about 2010.

  2. disregardable Avatar

most people use Gmail but it’s fine to use yahoo if you prefer it. just not icloud, because they shut off your ability to receive emails when you exceed the storage limit.

  3. mam88k Avatar

Ask the kids on TikTok. I use Gmail but I’m old AF. But it’s better than Yahoo.

  4. Miantava Avatar

I’m 30. I like yahoo a lot more than anything else.

  5. No-Cover-8986 Avatar

“Old” isn’t necessarily synonymous with “bad” or “outdated.” It still works fine.

  6. Next-Project-1450 Avatar

I’ve always used Outlook – and I mean Outlook (the program) and not Outlook.com.

It means I can have my emails from domains I own, my primary email, any email addresses I have created and use regularly, etc. all funnelled to my PC.

It means I can search them when the internet is down.

I can use webmail for all of my addresses – domain related ones or otherwise – but it is a right ball ache, especially on a smartphone. I have my ISP, Gmail, Googlemail, and each of the domains I own, all accessible via webmail.

I never have any reason or need to access email on my smartphone. I just check when I get home.

  7. Orangeshowergal Avatar

    Gmail

Fun fact, I was a part of a fraud campaign done my yahoo mail.

There was a point where yahoo changed to individuals needing 2 separate modes of backup to recover accounts. They did a hard switch without notification, and if you only had 1 form of backup (another email, phone number…) you were locked out of your account. The ONLY way to recover your account was to PAY for premium help.

The ONLY way to get your money back was to file a grievance with the BBB.

I know this sounds stupidly niche but it was fucked up

  8. Unraised32 Avatar

When you finally make the switch from yahoo, remember to swap EVERYTHING over to the new email.
Yahoo WILL delete your email if you haven’t accessed it in 6 months.
So if you have an old Yahoo email with an account (such as minecraft, steam, bank, anything, etc) tied to it from a long time ago, and you haven’t opened yahoo in forever, that account is likely gone.

  9. ExtremelyFilthyWhore Avatar

Outlook.com – Its what hotmail used to be.

  10. kanemano Avatar

    AOL,

    I’m kidding Gmail

  11. Appropriate-Owl7205 Avatar

Based off of your age Yahoo would should have been considered “old” around the time you created your account.

  12. Not-the-best-name Avatar

    Yahoo was old in 2010

  13. LivingEnd44 Avatar

LOL, it’s been old for a few decades now. Could be worse. I know people with AOL accounts.

Gmail is still the most common IMO. Mostly because of Android I think.

  14. SatisfactoryLoaf Avatar

    Most people use Gmail.

A few still use hotmail and yahoo and icloud and outlook.

A marginal few will use msn, aol, or an ISP email.

  15. Searchlights Avatar

Gmail is the most common and I can recommend it.

You should also look in to Proton Mail.

  16. instant_ramen_chef Avatar

My gf still has a Hotmail account.

Ans she unironically says “mapquest” instead of Google maps.

  17. NikonShooter_PJS Avatar

I have a Gmail account that I set up maybe two years ago and it is the front facing account on my website.

But my contact form and all my correspondence are done through my Yahoo account. I’ve had that account since 2001 and I’m not getting rid of it as long as Yahoo Itself exists.

I don’t care if it seems “old,” the search function in Yahoo‘s mailbox. System is vastly superior to every other service and I like having all of my correspondence in one place if I need to find something.

You’re young so you won’t understand this yet but at some point, you reach an age where you stop caring what other people think about you. I’ve been that way for about 15 years now. I don’t think it’ll change anytime soon.

  18. remosquito Avatar

How have you even heard of yahoo at your age? What have they done in the last 20 years?

  19. ktfarrier Avatar

Still use a hotmail, gmails in tow

  20. james_a_hetfield Avatar

I’ve had my Yahoo account for 20 years never really had any issues. My Gmail isn’t too far behind either. Always just stuck between those 2.

  21. Jagermonsta Avatar

I still use my same yahoo account. I know it’s old. I can still poke fun at my wife though as she’s still using her 25+ year old AOL email address.

  22. Dragontastic22 Avatar

    Aol = ancient

    Msn = old

    Yahoo = old

    Outlook = not tech savvy

    iCloud = standard

    Gmail = standard

Your own domain = modern, tech savvy, and you’re probably rich

  23. Educational-Ad-2884 Avatar

At work, I still routinely get emails from AOL and Hotmail addresses. You’re fine.

  24. Glittering_Big9290 Avatar

i know people still using AOL… yahoo isn’t that bad

  25. The001Keymaster Avatar

We have a couple clients that have AOL emails still.

  26. Illustrious-Gas-8987 Avatar

Gmail, and I’m old enough to have my own name with no numbers/special characters

  27. Easy-F Avatar

    yahoo was old in 2000

  28. Dp37405aa Avatar

Nothing says you cant have several different accounts. Keep your Yahoo account, set up an Outlook account, set up a couple Gmail accounts (you always need a throw a way account so that when the page asks for your email and then want to send a verification email and you know they are going to spam you to death).

See which is more user friendly to you.

  29. Azlamington Avatar

I have had the same yahoo email account for over 25 years now. Yes, Yahoo is “old”, but that doesn’t make it bad. It has never let me down and I don’t think I would ever stop using it as my main email address, unless yahoo goes belly up (God forbid).

  30. elephantshuze Avatar

    I’m still on Hotmail

  31. au4504 Avatar

I have used yahoo since 1998 or so. my first two email boxes i recall were yahoo and hotmail. there was no Gmail back then. I also had AOL at one point way back then too

  32. mooseontheloose1234 Avatar

YEAH, what’s WITH this? Was minding my own business when the college checkout lady at PB informed me—in a tone loud enough for the three people behind me to hear. “YAHOO! Haven’t seen one of those in a while…”🤔 Thanks—it’s vintage.” 🙄so now in an effort to stay relevant with the times, I’m expected to retrain my brain to visit a different website and memorize a new password to retrieve my junk emails. Feel like I’m on one of those insurance commercials when they’re teaching people how not to become their parents. Oooh well, my folks are pretty awesome…

  33. LucianDarth Avatar

I use Protonmail myself but I believe the majority are either on Gmail or Outlook.

  34. AzuleStriker Avatar

I know someone who still uses their original AOL email. Yahoo is old, but still works fine. Most people use gmail.

  35. everyothenamegone69 Avatar

Yahoo was such a pain with recovering my password that ended up going with Gmail.

  36. csch1992 Avatar

yahoo still exist? how the fuck to they earn money?

  37. planwithaman42 Avatar

I had a yahoo and used it a lot as a kid, but I basically only use gmail for everything now

  38. ramaloki Avatar

I mainly use my Yahoo but I have a Gmail too.

  39. PrincessSusan11 Avatar
    1. AOL. The only email address I have ever had since the mid 90s.
  40. Cinciballer Avatar

I work in restaurants. No offense, but I’m usually concerned for my livelihood when I see someone with a yahoo, Hotmail, or AOL address.

  41. RudeOrSarcasticPt2 Avatar

I use gmail, protonmail, and snail mail. 😂

  42. AlphaDart1337 Avatar

I still use yahoo. I have a gmail account as well, but yahoo is still my go-to. Gmail notifications are always buggy for me (some just get skipped for no reason).

  43. wango_fandango Avatar

Yahoo has been my email account since 1997…

  44. Roddykins1 Avatar

I’ve been using Gmail since it was invite only.

  45. allbsallthetime Avatar

I’ve been using Gmail since beta and it required an invitation to join.

As far as Yahoo, AT&T uses Yahoo as their email service for their customers.

I’m not fond of the interface but it’s a perfectly valid choice, so is Outlook.

I’m just surprised a youngster would choose that over Gmail.

If you really want to be hip, buy a domain name and get an email address using that domain. It’s pretty cheap and easy to do.

  46. gloriousPurpose33 Avatar

Own mailserver just for my domain

  47. missbohds Avatar

As someone who takes emails at work, the kids are @icloud.com. Caught me out the first few times as I auto guess @outlook/gmail/hotmail etc.

  48. Ok_Orchid1004 Avatar

Seems like most people use gmail these days. My primary email is an msn.com account I’ve had probably 25 years. I don’t know if you can even get that anymore.

  49. ArridScorpion Avatar

    You do you

If you want a secure email service that doesn’t allegedly farm your data – look at “Posteo”, a Berlin based company that charges a very reasonable €1 a month for their service

    https://posteo.de/en

    €1 = $1.10

I use it and it’s been rock solid for years

Old article but worth a read :

  50. Pspaughtamus Avatar

Knowing what a yahoo is, the original meaning of the word, I look askance at any serious person, like a lawyer, who uses that for professional purposes.

  51. willowwing Avatar

My brother still uses his original Juno email. He finds it entertaining.

  52. BigJeffreyC Avatar

Anyone remember Juno? It was a free dial up email only service. It was competing with AOL back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

  53. Neon_Rust Avatar

    “Now” considered? Haha just kidding.

No one would look down on you for using anything different. I have friends that use outlook, Hotmail, gmail, aol, icloud, talktalk, etc. it doesn’t really matter.

  54. filter_86d Avatar

    Just now you heard this?

  55. shebabbleslikeaidiot Avatar

Is it? I still use yahoo. Whoops.

  56. MaineHippo83 Avatar

Yahoo was old by the time you were born

  57. FinnbarMcBride Avatar

I don’t really understand why Yahoo is seen as inferior. Can someone explain?

  58. cmajka8 Avatar

47 years old. Still use Yahoo. You can pry it from my cold dead hands when im gone.

  59. lifelong1250 Avatar

Use AOL, it’s what the cool kids use.

  60. Own-Awareness-4203 Avatar

If you are going to go free gmail for general, proton mail if you care about security.

Email is just a dirty dirty business. The tech has not changed, so it’s like driving historic Route 69 but its never been paved or repaired so they keep selling you more expensive tires and cars that can handle how crappy the road is now.

  61. Allroy_66 Avatar

Whatever you want to use, pick something you’re gonna want to use forever. I made my email when I was a teenager and at 41 I’m still using it. I’ve tried multiple times to switch to a normal one, but changing email addresses is super difficult when everything in your life is attached to that one email. I’ve just accepted that this will be my stupid email until I die.

  62. bala_means_bullet Avatar

    Shit I still use Hotmail

  63. RetroactiveRecursion Avatar

Yahoo is like a burner phone for my email. If a site insists on an email address to do anything and I’m not really interested in joining anything, yahoo.

  64. Hshn Avatar

literally everyone uses Gmail. 2nd place is Microsoft outlook

  65. romulusnr Avatar

It’s all Gmail now. And considering they also will do pretty low cost email hosting (and free for NPOs), there’s plenty of non-gmail.com addreses out there that are run by gmail.

Though my mom’s hotmail still works.

  66. -LunaTink- Avatar

Most might recommend gmail, but they are evil so don’t. If you like Yahoo keep using Yahoo.

  67. CockroachMobile5753 Avatar

I still use mine and I’m old. It’s going to be an antique eventually and have cache, or that’s what I keep telling myself.

  68. Ok_Split_6463 Avatar

Old? How about hotmail? My gf still uses her original Hotmail address. Lol

  69. Fuck_Mods_And_Admins Avatar

I still use my MSN email.

  70. TommyAdagio Avatar

Use whatever works for you. If Yahoo still works for you, stick with it.

  71. Gary320 Avatar

Still use my Hotmail account that I created in 1999.

  72. cultured---trash Avatar

I’m just like you, 22 now, grew up with yahoo. I have a gmail and outlook for work/google drive, but the only ones I actually use for mail is yahoo and I always get the “huh? yahoo?” when I give out my email. I like it, though, and I don’t want to change, so I’ll be using it until the internet explodes.

  73. Mason_Miami Avatar

    Anyone recommend Proton Mail?

  74. U_canonlywish117 Avatar

I have been using Yahoo since I got rid of AOL 🤣

  75. Theyallknowme Avatar

I’ve had a Yahoo email address since 1999 and I don’t give a shit if people thinks its old or outdated.

It’s email, how trendy does it need to be? You send a message, I get a message. Simple.

I have a Gmail account for my business and it does the same thing as my personal Yahoo account.

People get caught up in trendy and it’s dumb.

  76. Both_Ear_1164 Avatar

    I’m 45 & still use Yahoo 🤷 IDC. I personally can’t stand Gmail.

  77. bumpynuks Avatar

Had my yahoo for 20 years, I am not changing it to be part of the in crowd or whatever.

  78. noots-to-you Avatar

Compuserve. AOL. Juno. Geocities. Or if you’re really old, your college.edu.

  79. StruggleBussingAdult Avatar

I’m stuck with a lot of stuff on Hotmail.

So much fucking spam goes to that email…

  80. Taz9093 Avatar

My sister made me a yahoo email in 1995. I don’t care if it’s old. I like my 30 year old email address.

  81. IcecreamSundae621 Avatar

I’ve always used yahoo too, I’m 27. Back in the day when we had yahoo messenger, it was cool. But now it has a lot of log in issues so I have made a gmail account.

  82. 500rockin Avatar

Gmail for myself, outlook for work. Yahoo is pretty much like having AOL email.

  83. LondonUKDave Avatar

    Better than hotmail.com!

  84. RefugeefromSAforums Avatar

I’m 57, still have my original yahoo email. My Gmail is my secondary account.

  85. Spiritual_Concept_57 Avatar

My Yahoo email is going on 30 years old. It’s my first and last name, no space, no numbers. It’s very easy to communicate to people and easy for them to remember. I’m not sure why an old email address is bad. I’m not technologically illiterate. I work for an AI company as a PM and write code for fun.

  86. Bigntallnerd Avatar

I have Yahoo and everything since they updated their email , it sucks. I absolutely hate it. I need to find a new email besides Gmail.

  87. Lonely_skeptic Avatar

lol I use Gmail but I still use an old hotmail address, too. I have an Apple ID too, oh, and Proton mail and Mailfence.

  88. genderlessadventure Avatar

I’ve always used yahoo and have gotten plenty of jokes about it being old but honestly I only ever use it through the Mail app on my Apple devices so I’m not actually interacting with yahoo in any way. If I used gmail or any other email provider I’d be getting the exact same experience through the mail app so why does it matter?

  89. shadowhunter742 Avatar

Bruhh how does a 21 y/o have a yahoo email???? Like how is someone younger than me using yahoo???

  90. 454ever Avatar

I can’t even hardly figure out how to use outlook and that’s what I have to use for work. I hate it. Gmail is so much easier and user friendly imo. But yes to answer the question yahoo is for the older folks mostly.

  91. PhotoJim99 Avatar

I don’t care what people think about my email domain. Just email me and stop thinking about it. 🙂

  92. britipinojeff Avatar

My yahoo email is only for signing in to stupid stuff

I got gmail for more professional things

  93. NoParticular2420 Avatar

I still have AOL and Gmail … now you know your’re old when you have AOL .. lol

  94. mshorts Avatar

My Yahoo Mail account is older than you. My Gmail account isn’t quite as old. Gmail is my primary.
