I’m 19 and this is my first real job. When I applied, they asked if I was fluent in Italian and English. I panicked and said yes even though I only took Italian for one semester in high school and barely remember anything.
I thought I wouldn’t get the job anyway. Or maybe the language part wouldn’t matter that much. But somehow they hired me. At first it was fine. Most of my tasks were in English and no one really questioned anything. But now they’re asking me to reply to emails from Italian clients and sit in on calls. I’ve been using Google Translate and random websites to fake it, and I’m constantly stressed I’ll mess something up or say the wrong thing.
I’ve started studying Italian every night just to try to keep up with the lie I created. It’s been a few months now. My boss thinks I’m great. My parents are proud. But I feel like a fraud every day I show up.
I know it’s my fault. I told the lie. But I really like the job. It’s the first time I’ve felt good about something I’m doing and I don’t want to lose it. I just don’t know how long I can keep this up without everything crashing down.
Has anyone else ever done something like this? Should I admit it and hope they don’t fire me? Or just keep learning and stay quiet?
Any advice would help because I feel like I’m going to explode if I don’t do something soon.

Admit that you lied and quit
Honestly this all depends on one thing – do you have to speak on those calls?
Enter whatever you have to say into ChatGPT and have it translate it to Italian. If you can milk not having to talk to actually talk to anyone you’ll be fine. Not morally but job wise.
Fake it smarter or fess up with style. “I’m improving my Italian daily” > “I lied.” Keep learning or come clean just ditch the panic
