I LOVE British commercial radio (especially Capital)

r/

From other people, I have heard nothing but complaints about British commercial radio, especially the brands in the Global stable, like Heart, Capital and LBC. People say there are too many ads, the songs are too repetitive, the presenters are annoying, etc. I’ve even heard that “these radio stations aren’t for people who like music, they’re for people who hate silence”.

I completely disagree; I love listening to Capital and it is often the highlight of my day. Here are my reasons:

  • The jingles & glitch sound effects between songs are like crack for my ears. The station has a really cohesive sonic identity and it’s very exciting to listen to.
  • There’s a sense of community, especially during the drive-time shows: as in “we’re all in this together”. It keeps me company on my drive to work.
  • The songs aren’t THAT repetitive, I’ve heard worse, and I’m only listening to it for 40 minutes at a time each way to and back from work. Anyway, I like to keep my finger on the pulse of what music is popular in the UK right now!
  • The presenters are really funny, I like the on-air minigames they sometimes do.
  • My favourite show is the Capital Weekender presented by Sam Lavery. It’s how I learnt about many of my favourite dance tracks right now.

In conclusion, Capital FM is one of my favourite things, and I have no idea what those who hate it are on about.
