Hey everyone,
I’ll try my best to explain my situation clearly.
I graduated in 2023 with a degree in economics. Since then, I’ve been struggling to land a job related to my field (what I’d consider a “career job”), though I’ve gotten a decent number of interviews. In the meantime, I’ve been living with my mom and working part-time retail jobs—none of which I’ve enjoyed.
Recently, I got fired from my most recent retail job. It was the first time I’ve ever been fired, and unfortunately, things between me and my mom haven’t been great lately. When I told her the news, she basically gave me an ultimatum: I have one week to find a job, and two weeks to be working 40 hours a week—or she’s kicking me out. She did say I’d be welcome back if I get a job and show I’m working full time, but as of now I haven’t had any luck, and time is running out.
I reached out to an uncle who lives nearby for a place to stay, but I haven’t heard back from him. My dad, who lives in another state, said I can stay with him temporarily, but he’s also pretty strict. He thinks I should move back to his state permanently, which I’m not sure I want to do.
What’s making this harder is that I’m really trying to stay focused on my long-term goal of landing a job in my field. I’m worried that taking a full-time retail or unrelated job right now might slow down or even derail that progress. But obviously being homeless isn’t an option.
I feel really lost and hurt, especially by how harsh my mom is being. I think she’s frustrated that it’s been a year and a half without a career job, but this approach is making things a lot harder.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or has advice, I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks for reading.

Consider taking a temporary job while still applying in your field. It’s a stopgap.
