I robbed an ex employer and this is the story behind it

r/

A little back story…when I was a teenager I worked for one of the many dollar store chains. As a cashier I made $9 an hour, which wasn’t cutting it for the bills. This specific store in this chain was poorly managed and unkempt, no security cameras, no AC unit. Summer time hit and it was fucking hot 24/7 and my coworkers were on the verge of heat stroke(one woman did actually pass out from the heat that year working). Now me being the little shit head i was, i noticed there was no cameras and used that to my advantage. Everyone i knew that was a shoplifter, I told them about the tactics and the rules and policies for shoplifting, and since there were no cameras in the store, a lot of them took the risk of being seen physically, and so did I. Every night there was usually two people closing, so my coworkers and I made it a daily routine when we got off work to void out previous transactions and take the profit from it if it was cash, and proceed to shop the store for whatever items we needed. I never once paid for anything in that store while working there. Inventory was once a year, by the time that came around I was gone, but inventory was thrown off by the thousands. I don’t believe i was the first one to catch onto this, but i told everyone else and the guilt sits with me. Nobody was ever in trouble for it, but now there is security cameras in every corner in the store. I feel as though i ruined the experience of being there, but at the same time it was a shitty company with no safety precautions.

This is heroic material explaining and sharing to your coworkers how to do this. DO NOT FEEL “SHITTY”.

How did they afford security cameras if you took all their money?

    Robin hood behavior!

You may have a bright future in politics, thanks for sharing.

It sounds like you’ve been reflecting on some past choices, and that’s a brave step. You took things that weren’t yours and shared that knowledge with others, which is weighing on you now. Those actions might have impacted the store’s ability to thrive, as resources that could have supported improvements were lost. Since you are confessing, it’s a sign you’re ready to make things right. Consider channeling that energy into something positive, like volunteering at a food bank or helping your community in another way, to create some good karma and find peace.

    This is gold.

r/antiwork r/anarchy101 and probably several others would approve heavily of this behavior.

    Fuck corporations, feed the people.

No judgement, I’ve done worse but the voiding transactions is high risk, it would be very easy to see a pattern of this on even a very old rudimentary till if anyone was looking. If you are going to do anything like this again or still are, it would genuinely be much better to pocket the cash from the transaction and not offer a receipt to the customer, you’d be shocked how many people just walk when you say “thank you” and don’t ask for a receipt. You could do any time in the shift, and just take the cash out for that amount at the end of the shift, that would be less risky.

Also note stealing from an employer is treated much more seriously than normal stealing as it’s seen a breach of trust crime and penalties will be more severe.

Everyone did it… Stealing from your employer was a right of passage. I knew people who got popped for it on site and had to talk to the police, I know people who had three jobs just so they could steal from them. No worries, Dollar stores are still around despite you! How much could you have possibly stolen to even make a difference?

A lot of people did this back in the day.

Lollll how do you even bring that idea to a coworker? Do you casually joke about it and see how they react?

Guilt!? Are you kidding me! I’m glad you rinsed them! No air con! Having staff faint! Well done you!

What is it with dollar stores and no air? Every summer here, every single Dollar General is hotter than hell!! I always ask why it’s so hot and every single one says the air doesn’t work. Bullocks! The companies are just too damn cheap to turn on the damn air! I feel terrible for the employees, and I wouldn’t blame any of them for stealing.

No guilt man, it’s 2025, robbing chain stores is ok now.
