I stole $20 from a customer at a fast food restaurant.

r/

About 7 years ago I was working as a manager of a fast food restaurant when a customer came through and ordered something small <$10. She paid with $100, and it was early, so I had to open the safe to get change. After giving her change, she immediately started screaming the most disgusting insults at me and telling me I was worthless and that I stole her $20. I realized she was correct - I accidentally grabbed 4 $20s instead of 5 from the safe, put one $20 in the drawer to cover her order, and gave her 3 $20s plus the remainder of her change out of the drawer - but I was so insulted and angry that, instead of fixing the situation, I gaslit her and said I did not withhold $20.

She demanded the manager count the drawer. I told her I was the manager but I would have an employee count. Since her $20 was in the safe, I knew the drawer would be correct. Two of my employees counted in front of her and confirmed it was even. I pulled out my pockets and showed her there was no $20 and she just confusedly walked out yelling and screaming the worst insults I’ve ever heard at all of us. Later on I opened the safe and pocketed her $20. I feel bad, but at the time I felt she deserved it for how she was acting. If she would have politely suggested I shorted her change, I would have very gladly opened the safe and gotten her $20 plus some extra snacks to make up for the inconvenience.

You only knew this person for a few minutes. You dont know why people act the way they do.What if they just found out they have cancer? Or their spouse just died? Or they’re having money problems? Its ok to give people a break every now and then without robbing them.

We used to charge customers (like 10 or 20 cents) for being mean or stupid. Had a button on the register. “Stupid Tax”

She insulted you, which makes her rude and unpleasant. You stole money from her and then lied about it, which makes you a liar and a thief.

Properly weighted, it looks like you sold your integrity for 20 bucks. I wouldn’t make that same deal in the future.

It’s ok. Abusive people tend to get abused.

I have been a lone parent in the past and down to my last penny was accounted for now although I wouldn’t have screamed and shouted she may have desperately needed that $20 to pay towards her rent/ kids lunches/ bus to work or whatever stealing money is never right! 🤬

You made a mistake and turned it into theft with a justification in hindsight. That is illegal and immoral.

She was rude but right because of your actions. That may be impolite (and immoral to some) but it’s not illegal.

She’s rude but you are performing some mental gymnastics with your rationalizing, friend.

I once did almost the exact opposite. A customer handed me a $20 for a $10 item. I held the $20 up to the light to make sure it’s real, and handed her back $90. Didn’t realize until I was counting the tills later. To be fair though, I was working doubles at different locations and was very tired. I emailed my boss immediately and luckily didn’t get in any trouble.
