I take a very long lunch break in the middle of my workday.

r/

This has been going on for 3 1/2 years now. I work remotely at a very large fortune 50 company, Monday through Friday, for 40 hours a week. At least those are the hours that I’m “on.“ Starting around noon every workday, I take a one and a half to two hour lunch break. I purposely block off my calendar with “busy work“ so no one questions what I’ve been doing. I honestly cannot find enough hours in the week to be able to do half of the stuff that I need to be able to get done, because that’s just part of my job. There is a ton of project management and follow up with various clients. But that’s just about everyone on my team.
For some reason, my boss has never questioned me or been suspicious of anything. My intuition tells me that he might do the same thing himself on his remote days, although he has a hybrid schedule. And that’s not all.
I have taken vacations before during lighter project weeks, where a lot of communication isnt required between me and my team. I took my laptop and logged on during mandatory meetings and then logged off right afterwards. I know there is a lot of talk out there by corporate CEOs saying return to the office is mandatory because of stuff like this, but I always hit my goals, I do everything that’s asked of me, and I exceed expectations every year during my performance review. Honestly, this is the first time in my career where I feel like I have a “normal“ work/life balance. I feel like this is what work really should be. 30-32 hours of core work, while enjoying life the way it should be enjoyed. Some of the happiest moments of my life have been playing with my toddler son and watching him grow up during my lunch hour. Sorry, not sorry.

honestly as u should lmao no human was meant to work a 40 hour work week, keep taking that long ahhh lunch

  3. No_Roof_1910 Avatar

So, you can’t do half the stuff you need to get done but you take 1.5 hours to 2 hours for lunch.

But you also said that you always hit your goals.

If you can’t get half done what you need to how in the hell do you hit your goals?

Something doesn’t add up because if you REALLY can’t get done even HALF of what you NEED to you, there should be no way you’re hitting your goals.

    Same, AFTER I eat lunch

Below comment applies on your not doing half of the work —-
Not on 2 hr lunch break (That do not matter if you are available when you are required)

People like you are spoiling work from home culture 😭😭😭

You know, people like me have to take care of bedridden mom suffering from cancer??

I apply half day leave when my productivity is low on a day(Not talking about wasting my time , just because if I can’t get things done because of not being able to focus)

    Have ethics!!!

Again 2hr lunch break is not an issue.

  6. Cathe_Rock Avatar

Honestly, this is how work should be. You’re getting everything done, crushing your reviews, and actually living your life. That’s not something to feel bad about , that’s the dream

  7. tired_of_morons2 Avatar

MFer I take a 1.5-2 hour lunch break in every day in the office.

  8. ExistingPoem1374 Avatar

Before I retired last year, was remote for 20 years, once kids started school 1+ hour sex every other day!

    Child’s play.

It’s called time stealing and is exceptionally bad. Just saying from a labour aspect

  11. Antiassman Avatar

Do you king/queen. In Spain they have half days to enjoy nice weather. If we normalized chilling we would all be happier and more productive

  12. crazygoodfuture Avatar

    You are doing great!!!!

  13. Reasonable_Insect503 Avatar

They know. It just isn’t worth their time yet to do anything about it.

Why would you tell on yourself unless you’re a plant.
Social media isnt a confessional booth. No wonder why they want everyone in an office.

My remote job just started offering 8 hour shifts- I’ve still been working my normal 6 hours but hitting goals for the 8 hour shifts and making an extra $250 a week. Fuck a job, get your money and live your life.

  18. Suspicious_Plant4231 Avatar

I think a lot of people do it given the chance. Even as a grocery store cashier, when I was told I could take my break I’d go to the bathroom first then clock out. You know that saying about shitting on company time lol. It took like 3 or 4 minutes to walk all the way back there and go then go back to the front. I got one half hour break for standing 8 hours and hurting my back, so I was going to use those precious extra minutes

  19. FlautoSpezzato Avatar

It’s fine since it seems to make you more productive

  20. slimricc Avatar

30 hours of work at any job should afford you survivability

  21. Dry-Insurance-9586 Avatar

Makes me working my ass off 85 hours per week and still taking care of my home and two young kids seem just silly.

  22. Radicalsimplicity Avatar

As long as you do the job very well – not sure what the concern is. We work to live, do not live to work. Enjoy life & worry less.

  23. DadOnTheInternet Avatar

I feel that. I work “40” hours but maybe put in 3 a week

  24. Guilty-Disaster83 Avatar

I am also remote and I do the same!! No one bothers me I get my work done I do what I want. I am very lucky!!! It allows me to have a great work balance

The most occurring fraud in the US is employer fraud, companies not paying employees fair wages that rise with cost of living/inflation or not paying for work done outside of the normal shift.

Don’t feel bad for one moment. Anyone who is mad about that needs to look at life from a higher perspective. This is it- this is the one life we have. A 90 minute lunch to help with your mental health/ morale is not cheating.

  26. Credit-Limit Avatar

Brother I do maybe 4 hours of work per day and have been for over 2 years. I’ve won rewards and bonuses for high performance too. I make like $130k fully remote

  27. chrisinator9393 Avatar

I’m positive this is the norm across corp America and no one cares. Do it.

I’m a custodian and I take up to 4 hour lunches depending on the day. 😂

  28. buttbologna Avatar

On my remote days if nothing pops up by 230-3 pm ish then I just take a nap.

  29. madfoot Avatar

    You’re my fucking hero.

  30. ColdAsHeaven Avatar

    As other have said.

If all your work is getting done on time, fantastic job. We’re paid by the hour but that’s extremely outdated. On average we are 3x as productive now than 30 years ago.

Our one days work is worth 3 days back in the 90’s. But we’re paid still only for the day.

  31. PM_ME_YOUR_KINKAJUS Avatar

I do the same thing but don’t have it on my calendar. I take a nap. Ill get back to you when I do. I also have a work cell so I carry that with my sometimes.

  32. Psychological_Wash47 Avatar

I say screw returning to the office. If enough people say and do that then perhaps they will back off.

  33. RichVibez007 Avatar

I take naps around 2-3 several times a week 😂 I am self employed though

  34. SnooCookies5553 Avatar

I’m genuinely very happy for you, I think work life balance is hard to achieve and you need to think about yourself first and foremost. But selfishly, my teacher heart is so jealous, I work through lunch lol

  35. COD1-OG Avatar

If all your work is done and you hit your goals then why does it matter how long you work?

Nothing is more important than time w/ family/kids.

  36. BlueberryCold3608 Avatar

I just don’t get it why cashier in the USA can’t seat
That is a long day to be up not walking around…. Not good for your feet 🦶

  37. benwight Avatar

“I honestly cannot find enough hours in the week to be able to do half of the stuff that I need to be able to get done” cause you’re taking 2.5 to 5 extra hours off every week 😂 Great job setting low expectations though, sounds like your employer is dumb and it worked out great for you.

When I worked in an office I’d take “vape breaks”, aka a reason to step outside of our windowless office, and sometimes I’d be out there for an hour talking to a coworker who’d step outside with me just to get some air. There’s always either too much to work on or not enough, 40 hours every single week is bs

  38. dual_ears Avatar

I reckon you’re seeing a double benefit – not only can you get away with slacking off, but you’re also not having to travel. I spend nearly two hours travelling each weekday, so my work week is closer to 50 hours.

  39. Technical_View1722 Avatar

Shameful. This is why remote work is becoming nonexistent.

  40. Chris9770 Avatar

When I worked remote, I just connected my laptop to my phone hotspot and did errands and went to the gym with my laptop close by. I did about an hour and a half of actual work a day.

  41. Zookreeper1 Avatar

This BS right here. This is why we are being forced back into office. Most of us are honest and efficient. This MF (or operative) is throwing this shit out into the ether to be used as data when AI decides we all have to be in office again. Do what you do, OP, but shut the fuck up about it.

Years ago, the routine I developed at the office was showing up to work in the morning, make sure a few people saw me, then leave at about 10 or 10:30 to get the matinee price at the movies, go to the zoo, etc. I’d leave my coat and bag at my desk in case someone came to my desk looking for me. Come back at 3 or 4pm, reply to a couple of emails and go home.
