I wasn’t driving recklessly. Shouldn’t this be covered by the dealers garage liability or garage keepers insurance?

Insurance isn’t free money. If the insurance finds you liable, they’ll pay the dealer while coming after you.
Fixing scuffed wheels to perfection costs about $100 per wheel. They seem to want you to pay for new wheels and possibly tires.
If you do end up paying for new wheels, demand to take possession of the old ones. You can get them fixed up and resell them.
I bet that someone at the dealership is hoping to make some easy pocket money from this.
Did you sign a Test-Drive Agreement? If so, you need to review it as this will be the legal basis for the dealer going after you. Garage liability isn’t going to cover this because the car is owned by the dealership. That being said, $3000 seems high. Ask for this estimate and then contact your insurance company and hope your personal insurance covers test drives. Good luck.
I guarantee they have a guy that repairs them right there in their parking lot for them for $120 per wheel, unless the wheel is irreparably damaged which the wheel would have to be bent or cracked to be the case
I worked at a BMW dealer in the parts department. Yes, to answer the question, new BMW wheels can absolutely go for $3k, and WAY higher. Some you literally can only buy as a set of 4 for a ridiculous amount. That being said- a scuffed wheel gets sent to a local wheel restoration place and cost a couple hundred AT MOST. I was literally the guy making these calls. If it’s super bad, they’ll rob one off another one on the lot to get a unit moving. Theyll just repair it best they can and swap it onto a loaner or Valet vehicle. These folks are right to get an itemized repair order, because that’s exactly what they’ll do- they’ll run a ticket through the shop because they’ll also try to claim it under an in house/ BMW incidental internal coverage program And have to pay a tech to mount and balance a tire and put it back on a car. If they’re claiming that they’re going to replace the thing, again- get an actual invoice. I don’t know what the insurance portion will cover or have much helpful advice there, but I DO know that there is absolutely a paper trail that you should demand a copy of if they’re trying to wring you for 3 fucking grand.
