I wish there were some more synthy soundtracks, or jazzy soundtracks, or even the old Roland SC-55s and JV-1080s popular in 90s sitcoms. Or dynamic prog metal bands. Or poser-punk. Or dubstep. Or jazz fusion.
Everyone wants to be classic cinema.
Orchestras just remind me of the stronghold academic elitism still has over California… but seriously, I wish synths in movies and tv shows weren’t regarded as cheap and cheesy.

Really any sort of instrumental music will work. I agree, it doesn’t have to be all orchestral, but I don’t think it’s over used. A modern movie taking place in the city could totally have a jazz soundtrack, or a western can have just acoustic guitar and harmonica. It’s whatever serves the film. Metal and punk would only work for specific movies / scenes.
Martin Scorsese has some unexpected punk songs in his movies though. The credits at the end of Good Fellas starts with a Sex Pistols song before going back to Eric Clapton. Also the main theme of The Departed is Dropkick Murphy’s.
Watch Red Tails with its dubstep soundtrack and see if you actually like it
Was with you until “academic elitism in California”… are you serious? The biggest film in the world right now is a man in spandex that can fly and shoots lasers out of his eyes and beats up baddies. It’s hardly an Algonquin roundtable, pal.
Focus groups have informed production companies that orchestras trigger the emotions they want most effectively. It’s simple nickle and diming. I’m bored of it too, but its existence is purely financial, not academic.
Be sure to watch David Lynch Dune
You know what i can see it.
There are, alot. You just watch the movies they are not in.
