I want to drop everything to find my life’s purpose.

r/

I’m 21 years old and considering dropping out of college. Despite coming from a family of doctors, academics was never my thing. I was always smart and capable but I don’t apply myself.

I know I can be great, but I can’t see myself doing the 9-5. I want to leave school to pursue my passion for MMA. It’s brutal with no guarantees but it’s a risk I’m willing to take to find meaning in my life.

Dropping out would disappoint my family, my friends, I’d be a failure in their eyes. But by choosing my own path I feel like I could finally be a winner in life.

Am I crazy for wanting this? As a kid you’re always told to follow your dreams, I want to find my purpose through obsession. I want my life to mean something, to be worth something in my own eyes, for my own sake.

if you want to pursue MMA, start small and now. You can begin training and looking towards this with your actions first while you walk the college path. If you keep working at it and prove to yourself and the people around you that it’s a possibility, it would shift from a dream to an achievable goal

Are you crazy to want it it? NO. Is it terrible to have a high goal? NO.

As long as you can support yourself. That is my only concern: Can you pay all of your bills while you pursue this?

If yes, GO FOR IT. If no, you need to figure your shit out.

If you’re 21 you’ve got 1-2 years left? If I were you I’d get that degree and train on the side. At the end of the day once you earn that degree nobody can take it away from you and can be a valuable asset.

Go for it. Fuck how you’ll look in other people’s eyes if they really loved you then theyll support you no matter what path you choose. You can always go back to school but life is short death is one of the only things promised to us so might as well pursue your passions.

I will say this as someone who dropped out to pursue my dream: you can drop out and still have a full life, find a job find a career and be happy, but there are doors that will close and it is much harder to get back into the older you get. I would stick it out and focus on building MMA on the side, building connections and then if things are a little rocky finding something, you have a degree to fall back on.
