Of course I know it makes them infertile through normal means (assuming the vasectomy was entirely successful), but are doctors also entirely unable to medically extract sperm and use it to impregnate a woman if the man wants to have kids afterwards?
From my research it seems kinda like tubal ligation for women where the vitally important organs and parts are in no way harmed, just the pathways between them (as in sperm is still being produced it just cant escape from the body anymore). Though even with that I have no idea if artificial insemination is at all possible for a woman who had that procedure.
Edit: just a note I was more asking about if vasectomies do anything to the person’s sperm or general fertility (and therefore their ability to get anyone pregnant via any means), not asking if vasectomies are always successful. I have added some words to specify this meaning a little further.
Edot 2: for a little more clarification, I’m not a man looking into getting a vasectomy. Its just one of those medical procedures I don’t really know much about and I was wondering how exactly it works. So there’s no need to warn me even more about talking to doctors or being careful for the first bit of time.

Usually, yes. There are very rare cases of failed vasectomies.
They are certainly less effective than, say, a full hysterectomy. However those two aren’t even comparable in invasiveness.
Not 100%. Sometimes the vasectomy fails to completely disconnect the equipment. And sometimes the body and heal itself.
Men still make sperm, it just doesn’t go through the tube anymore
So yes they are still fertile technically
If done correctly, there should be zero chance he will be able to get someone pregnant.
However, it isn’t permanent – like you say, it is simply “cutting the tubes” and his testicles and all associated bits are still in place – men don’t need TRT after a vasectomy for example.
This can be reversed, but success rates aren’t perfect, and here in the UK you cannot get this done on the NHS, which is why they generally make absolutely certain you don’t want any more children, or don’t want them at all.
Generally yes, but not 100%.
I’m getting one soon.
> but are doctors also entirely unable to medically extract sperm and use it to impregnate a woman?
No, if you have a vasectomy, doctors can still use a syringe to extract sperm from the testicles which then can e.g. be used for artificial insemination.
You’re only preventing accidental pregnancies with pretty good reliability.
I got one 40 some years ago and it’s still working
A coworker of mine had his vasectomy after his 3rd child and he still managed to sneak one past the goalie after that and now he has 4 boys.
Vasectomies are reversible, but they dont have a 100% success rate.
You still make swimmers, they just don’t go where they’d need to go to cause a pregnancy.
But this is very very important. You are not immediately ready for unprotected sex. You have to wait a few weeks and then submit a sample to the doctor.
You might even need more than one sample.
Be sure you are clear on the follow up instructions and that you actually do the follow up to know you’re in the clear.
Vasectomies don’t make you fertile, they just stop fertile material being released. They’re reversible by reattaching the cut tubes (“vas deferens”) and unblocking them.
Note there are apparently different types of vasectomies, some more successful than others. There are also side effects people seem to wish they were made more aware of.

There is a surgical technique called vasovostomy which includes reattachment of distall and proximal ends of the vas deferens. Its usually reversible by this mean.
20 years and no issues yet. After the procedure you have to ejaculate 3 times, after recovering of course. Then you fire one into a cup and they check it. They will call you and say congratulations, you’re sterile
You cum dust. Literally, poof…cloud of dust, lol
Men who have had vasectomies still produce sperm, but I imagine extracting it would be a pretty invasive procedure.
If done properly, yes. If the vas deferens is severed there is no way for sperm to enter the ejaculate. The testes will still produce sperm, but they are essentially trapped.
Hypothetically, if such a surgical method exists, you could extract a sperm directly from the testes (apparently this does exist) and use it in IVF.
> but are doctors also entirely unable to medically extract sperm and use it to impregnate a woman?
I feel like people aren’t reading your actual post and are just making assumptions about what you meant by the title question, so they’re not answering this, lol.
It would hypothetically be possible to extract sperm because the sperm still exists – it just doesn’t come out during ejaculation anymore. However, while it’s technically possible to get the sperm out, most doctors would strongly recommend against depending on this option. Instead, you would probably be encouraged to either store sperm before the vasectomy, or to use an alternative form of birth control that can be reversed later when you decide that you want to have a kid (such as having your partner get an IUD). You could also just reverse the vasectomy later, but that’s not a guaranteed option, so it would be better to try something that is intended to be reversed. Unfortunately, the only intentionally temporary methods of birth control (other than condoms) are only available to women, so your partner would have to be the one to get one of those options.
So, from a practical perspective, it doesn’t really matter thaaaat much that the sperm is effectively there, because, once you get the vasectomy, there aren’t a lot of easy ways to actually get your sperm out of your body for use, even if you wanted to. If you think there’s a chance that you might want to use your sperm later, then probably just don’t get a vasectomy. Sure, it’s technically possible to do so, but, realisitically, there are other, better options available if you want a long-term but reversible birth control option.
No, they could still extract sperm and use it through ivf for example
There are also ways to reverse a vasectomy, but its not a guarantee
The testes still produce sperm. What is removed is the pathway for them to exit their storage facility and exit through the meat missle.
Before a vasectomy if the sperm are in storage for too long the body has a process to eliminate them and keep fresh ones in stock. So after a vasectomy since they can’t leave the body just does the refresher process.
I have a vasectomy. My body still produces sperm, but that sperm no longer gets added to my semen during ejaculation.
From what I understand, my sperm could still be medically extracted and viable for fertilization.
It’s not 100% but it being easily reversible is a myth idiots pedal. The longer you have had a vasectomy the less chance it can actually be reversed
Getting mine on Monday
Modern vasectomies are very robust. My tubes were cut, tied, and crimped off with titanium ferrules. It’s been a decade and nobody has gotten pregnant. Sperm count is zero.
my dad got a vasectomy. a few years later, my sister was born. so….
she’s been fine so far. finishing undergrad college and aiming for optometry school. good social life.
If the vasectomy is proven to successful by a sperm count six weeks after the surgery, then yes.
I have had two vasectomies but I didn’t bother to get the sperm count after the first one and boom! my fifth son is born.
Then I got the second vasectomy at a better clinic, verified the results with the proper sperm count, and no more kids for 11 years of glorious frequent unprotected sex.
No, vasectomies do not halt the production of sperm in any way. It only disconnects the delivery system.
I met a woman with a five year old child. She said her husband had a vasectomy 10 years before the child was born, so not 100%
I have one. It was quick and easy and the healing was fast.
VERY IMPORTANT: if you’re getting one, know your doctor. Any ductor who expresses doubt, or tries to question your decision, don’t use them. My friend had a doctor who tried to maintain the option for a future reversal by leaving a part of the vas deferens connected. This resulted in an incomplete vasectomy and a surprise pregnancy. Know your doctor.
My doctor told me that reversal is really not the smart move. Nor is freezing sperm. You will retain fertility, as your sperm count and hormones remain the same. Only the exit route gets cut off for them. So the best and least invasive way to have future children is to have a clinic extract the sperm and implant them in the host you’ve selected.
Reversal is not the way to go. Simple extraction and implantation is.
Reversals are difficult, don’t always work, leave you with a long recovery, and then require ANOTHER vasectomy once you’ve had your spawn.
A vasectomy is technically, but not practically, reversible. Under the current technology, it’s better to consider it permanent.
Weird how so many people misunderstood your question
The man can’t impregnate someone through sex. He still produces sperm though so if he’s willing to go through the pain and trouble, sperm can be extracted and used to impregnate someone
Some clarification: After the vasectomy you can get sperm extracted, and it’s usually done at a fertility clinic (US). However, your body will only make sperm for a limited time. It varies from person to person, but generally after 4-5 years (up to 10 years for some), there will be very little if any extractable sperm.
The testicles and epididymis are still completely intact. Careful extraction is possible, but surgical reversal of the vasectomy is a more common first attempt.
The vasectomy surgery is only a severing of the VAs deferens which is a tube for carrying sperm from testicle to the ejaculatory duct. Which is the tube that mixes all materials for ejaculate before joining the urethra.
I don’t know why most of the top comments are ignoring your actual question.
Nope! Buddy has a set of twins, kids 4 & 5.
When the doctor says, Come back for a follow-up, go back for the follow-up.
Rule for life I live by, nothing is ever 100%
First – a vasectomy is not reliable for a few days after the surgery (if post-vasectomy a man even wants to have sex) as there may be residual sperm in the seminal vesicles or what remains of the vas deferens (until those sperm die out or are expelled during post-vasectomy ejaculation – once the guy is comfortable enough for sex or masturbation). Second – testicular aspiration of sperm is one way of providing sperm for subsequent in vitro fertilization. Another possibility would be to have sperm banked and stored frozen prior to the vasectomy, they can be viable once thawed also for future pregnancies.
Supposedly. Lol.
I got a vasectomy thinking it would keep us from having anymore kids, it just made them come out looking like my neighbor.
A vasectomy doesn’t make you infertile – you’re still producing sperm, it’s just the plumbing that gets them out of the house is disconnected.
Balls continue to make swimmers, but the way is shut. If the swimmers find a way, or you bring them to the egg, then babies happen.
I’m pretty sure they can reverse it
That’s the goal.
No! 99% trust me I know
No, your balls still work, the sperm just cant reach your dick. There are even reversal surgeries
I certainly hope so
Not always, I had mine done and then about 3 months later my wife had to have her fallopian tubes removed completely so I’ve never tested to see if I’m still shooting blanks or not because it doesn’t really matter now 😂
I actually come from a dad who got a vasectomy, my parents say im the best accident that’s every happened
No, only the tubes are cut. The balls are still there and produce still sperm and testosterone. There are possibilities to re attach the tubes or obtain sperm with a needle directly from the balls.
my first post check i still had some swimmers so be careful
I’ve had 2 vasectomys. I had 2 more children after. It’s definitely possible. Be warned.
Well my brother’s third child says nope 😂
No
If he goes to all the follow ups yes if not no

You can have a reversal and go on to have more kids. I did this 9 years after my vasectomy.
Nothing is ever 100% for example if you get a vasectomy and go do the deed a few days later it’s still possible to get someone pregnant, soo wait for how long the doctor says.
Sometimes the vasectomy is done poorly and it is still possible to get someone pregnant.
The body has a uncanny ability to heal itself when it comes down to being able to reproduce, soo it’s rare but possibly for the body to heal itself, do exams every five years or ten.
But yeah it’s very reliable.
No vasectomies can fail. Both early on and farther down the road. When you get them, they do sperm count checks 2 times after to ensure it was successful but the body can heal itself down to road too and make it less effective
My Dad got a vasectomy and my Mom was pregnant with me about 80 days later. So there’s that
No. Although newer technique for vasectomies make it extremely unlikely for the vas to reattach (most folks cut portions out, burn the ends and tie the ends backwards as opposed to old techniques some of just cutting), you can get a microsurgery vasectomy reversal or testicle extraction.
You can get a reversible vasectomy. Essentially they tie a knot where your sperm travels. They simply undo the knot when you go back to them.
I’m getting mine done next month. The spermy tubes get snipped on both balls, and you want the spermy tube’s apart because they can reattach and you’re fertile again. The first week, there’s no touchy to heal. It’s recommended to drain your meat tube at least 20 times in 8-10 weeks to get rid of the extra swimmer. You give a sample afterward, and the doctor will say if you’re good or they need the procedure again or you need to jerk off some more.. You can still knock up someone if you don’t clean your tubes out before the doctors say so. I hope that answers your questions.
I am literally living proof of no lol. Especially before they cauterized the ends it would grow back
I had mine in my late 20s, already had two kids by the time I could drink, and it has been one of the best things I’ve ever done for our relationship. However we had two different people at work be off of work with injury and get their wives pregnant even with vasectomies so I paid for a test to double check after I was 40 just to ease our minds.
A vasectomy is reversable, however there is no guarantee a reversal will allow you to procreate naturally. There are also different types of vasectomies. Some use a clip that just pinches the tube closed and they can come loose, my vasectomy they cut into the tube and then cauterized both sides, really no way for that accident correct itself.
I was also informed that the longer you are snipped the lower your chances of a reversal allowing natural procreation, something about your body starting to create antibodies against your sperm or something (been a long time since mine was done)
It takes a few months to get the sperm out of the tubes. So, yes, you can father a child after the op
You are tested afterward, and you have to be sterile in order for the vasectomy to be known effective
Usually, but there is a 90 period of testing or three office visits where they test if the Vasectomy was done correctly and the count remains zero. You can have a vasectomy reverse but it is time sensitive there is a 50% chance of a successful reversal but the success rate goes down every year after the Vasectomy, there are also procedures where you can extract sperm from the testicles after a vasectomy to use to impregnate a woman but it is spendy
No. I know people who had vasectomies work for over 5 years and the vas deferens grew back.
The odds are 1 in 2500.
Well the procedure is technically reversible. Doctors can go there and glue the tubes back together. But it is not guaranteed to work, obviously. You can also go through a procedure where they extract your sperm like when you do blood work and then it proceeds as artificial insemination. So yeah you’re right, vasectomy does nothing to your little swimmers except preventing them to escape from your body lol
This type of stuff is scary.
