Yes. It smells like gas. If no one knew what it was, there’s no way you ruined the party. That’s on all of you. If you live with gas, you should know the smell. It’s very, very dangerous to leave the gas valve open. Don’t do that.

ETA: I got confused when he said he blew out the flame. I thought  he literally just blew it out with the gas still on.

    It shouldn’t make much.

If a gas valve is working properly, it shuts off all gas flow when the pilot flame goes out. There’s a thermocouple at the pilot flame that supplies a voltage to the the valve when hot enough. As soon as the thermocouple isn’t hot enough, the pilot valve closes.

If the gas was off, how was the flame going?

It the gas is off there can be no flame to blow out!

If you blow out the pilot light gas will no longer continue to flow.

This is precisely how you get a haunted house, a ghost will entre the house if the flame is extinguished this way, it’s why there are the famous copper scrolls of Marty that adorn every stove for this one fact, also why all the paranormal shows stopped being made 4 years ago as we used COVID to distribute the copper scrolls, you must have missed out. The smell was prob the dead. You should know at 3:30am that’s when they are most active

“The flame” or the pilot light? Depends on the age of the appliance. Most new models will cut off the gas to minimize the danger of a gas leak. If you’re looking into a gas stove and you’re concerned, look for this feature.

Which flame? The pilot light? Or the actual burners? Actually – it doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t blow the flame regardless.

You should certainly NOT blow out the pilot light. Doing so will certainly cause a small…. and a dangerous situation.

You should cnot HAVE to blow out the burners if they’re off. In fact, if the burners continue to burn when they’re off – you should immediately contact a professional to examine the fixtures for damage.

You should not blow either of them out.
